Monument Circle is by far one of my favorite spots in the Circle City. It's kind of an obvious choice but I can't help but love a space that screams "potential" and reminds me of bustling piazza and placas in Europe. So to you dear yogis of Indy, I thank you for bringing this space to life...for rolling out your mats, shutting down the streets and saluting the sun. I couldn't tell who had more fun on Saturday - the spandex-clad attendees or the creepy men on the sidelines. Either way, I was proud of our city and your hard work. Thank you and namaste!
Something magical happens when 2,500 yoga-loving souls come together on a warm summer evening for a little outdoor yoga. The Yoga Village was fabulous: a perfect way to showcase Indy's yoga studios (also, the free class coupons totally made my day). The yoga class itself flowed beautifully, and the beginner level of the class ensured that even first-time yogis could easily follow along. This was my second Monumental Yoga, and it just keeps getting better.
Indy Yogis, UNITE! Honestly, this event was amazing. I love mostly everything holistic, so this event was right up my alley. I love the variety of classes offered that lead up to the main event, so if you're looking to try something out, fret not, it's free and you should definitely give it a try! I loved the variety of vendors as well, so it was great to look around and learn about a few new businesses I had never heard of. A HUGE shout out and thank you to Invoke for organizing this all and making this such a successful, five-star event. Getting thousands of people downtown without a major flaw is a success in my book, and they went above and beyond. The best part of the event was the main vinyasa yoga. I loved being surrounded by like-minded yogis that are there to give it their all, sweat it out, and leave the stress on the bricks surrounding Monument Circle. I loved that they switched up instructors as well. There's nothing worse than going to a class and not connecting well with the instructor so you're stuck with them for an hour and aren't really feeling it. They all transitioned into each others' moves very well and it worked out nicely to get a variety of genders and voices. I can't wait for next year and hope to continue to see more and different vendors!
I loved this event! Throughout the afternoon/evening they have small yoga classes at different places and times around monument circle. The big yoga class "the community class" was at 7pm. I (along with 3,000 other Indy yogis) went to the community class! It was so much fun! In addition to the classes, there are vendor booths located around the perimeter of the monument circle. Be sure to check them out. I learned about a few yoga studios that I didn't know about and even got a few free yoga class coupons. This is a fantastic event and I'll definitely be back next year!
I'm a bit embarrassed saying that this is the first year I came to this event. Even more embarrassed saying that this is the first time I even knew this event existed! I'm so glad that I finally got to come and be part of something so magical. There's just something special about 3,000+ people taking over the streets of the Circle and zenning out! The mini classes and the community class were great! I loved how so many like minded companies came together and had booths offering information, discounted classes, and healthy food options. Loved this event. Sad it's only once a year.
Monumental Yoga was fantastic. The day was perfect, with a light breezy coming out of the south east (I made that trajectory up, but it's probably true). There were tons of people lining the circle and it was just a good time. I do yoga in my workout plan and it as comparable to it. They incorporated all of the tradition moves (downward dog, warrior one, warrior two, etc.) into about a one hour yoga session. There were some wide leg hang overs that got a little close to your neighbors, but since I was with friends they just had to deal with all this goodness in their face during those poses. I will definitely participate in a future event. Things to know: 1. Get to the event about an hour before it starts so you can find parking and walk to the circle and so you can get a good seat for you and your friends. 2. Eat Year they have a charitable organization you can donate to if you'd like, but otherwise the event is FREE.
A rainy day had us questioning the decision to go, but so glad we did! Beautiful night, many vendors, friends old and new doing yoga. All levels of experience, adults and children alike brought together in harmony. An annual event that you should plan on attending.
I absolutely love this event! A day to meet other yogis, relax, and have fun! The atmosphere is usually awesome. It is nice to do yoga with thousands of other people. Now your personal space will be invaded due to the crowd but it is just for a few minutes. I like how the instructors sometimes interject the sessions with a funny or awkward pose to try to get people to interact with each other. Also, the beautiful view of the monument circle helps makes this a nice event.
Experiencing a yoga session with hundreds of other Indy lovers was quite an experience! And to top it off, we were given a gorgeous day. I think everyone got their sweat on whether they wanted to or not. ha The live music was a great addition as it really set the mood to relax, breathe and be peaceful. I was impressed at how many yogis exist in Indianapolis. Believe me, I'm not a professional when it comes to yoga so I was more of the "let's try something new!" gal. But I definitely spotted the experts that most definitely knew what was up. Any reason to shut down the circle is quite nice. It allows you to truly enjoy the beauty of being in the center of downtown. Can't wait to do this again next year!
Wow. I am SO glad I forsake the weather report and went downtown to Monumental Yoga this evening. Monumental Yoga celebrates the official beginning of he summer by bringing local Yoga studios together for one massive yoga event at Monumental Circle. This was my first time being able to attend and I am so glad I did!! What an incredible gathering of all the local yogis and their counterparts. Luckily I had time to visit several of the Yoga Village vendors, including the Yelp booth for free henna! I had a complimentary Reiki treatment and also purchased some Cards4Humanity and a bracelet to commemorate my experience. But best of all was the community class. Showcasing five different instructors during the hour-long class, our local yoga community really shined. It was so evident how much care and planning had been done to have a thoughtful and meaningful yoga practice. I feel refreshed, reenergized, and ready to take my practice into the summer. Best of all, I feel great having supported Indy Yoga Movement.
Come as you are and experience the pain and love of our city through communal yoga! Not only do you get to enjoy spending some peaceful time with your fellow Indy humans, but you also get to sit in the middle of the Circle City, barefoot, basking in the glorious sunshine. It is a truly beautiful experience. Some friends and I walked down to Monument Circle after work for some much-needed stress relief. We arrived early to get a good spot and check out the vendor booths. They offered samples, yoga class coupons and hippie merch for yogis, health nuts and green enthusiasts. Live music filled the circle as people starting setting up their mats on the brick road. I LOVE the diversity represented at this event! Big, small, light, dark, young, old, families and singles. Not a melting pot, but more like a salad. Everyone comes from different cultures and values which blends together in a way that only can be described as a salad of diversity. It's awe-inspiring! For a free, family-friendly event, you can't beat the high level of yoga you got from this event! Each segment was done by a different instructor; one even spoke Spanish during their part. Halfway through the class, there was a homeless guy being weird, smoking "something" during the session. He started frolicking through the people, shouting and being obnoxious about us taking over his "corner". Finally, security told him to leave. How do they always find me?? Still, he didn't screw up my positive vibes! I had fun with my friends and felt amazing afterwards. Thank you everyone who made this event possible ~ Namaste!
I had checked the Facebook event page before I left to make sure it was all still happening, given the forecast. I was assured it was, so off I went! I left work early to get a good spot, stop at a couple interesting booths and check out the Core HIIT Yoga class. The meditation hadn't started yet, which was being held in the same quadrant of the circle, according to the website. I stopped at the Yelp tent and got my free henna tattoo - thanks Yelp! First one and I had no idea that it would last so long! Anyway, the tent was in the northwest quad, so I kept an eye out for the class to start. I stopped by the "Information" booth and asked about the class. They had no idea and NO schedule on hand. I checked the website, it was down! I NEVER saw anyone doing anything other than meditating before the downpour. I hid under a tree for a bit and when I still saw nothing, so I headed back to my office to pack up and go home. Of course, by the time I had changed and told my husband I was on my way, the rain had cleared. I was over it by that time so I went home. I saw the wonderful pictures later, but I was very frustrated that the class I was most looking forward to never happened. I may check it out next year, but I will try not to get my expectations up in hopes of better organization.
Monumental Yoga is an amazing event! I attended the year gathering this evening with a group of great friends. The event took place on monument circle this evening, from 4:30 pm - 8:00 pm. Large crowds of people are drawn to the event. To my delight, attendees exemplified the diversity found in Indiana - age, gender, race, etc. In order to provide structure, for both organizers and attendees, events are staggered throughout the evening. My friends and I opted to start our Monumental yoga journey with a mindfulness meditation. The mediation took place on the grass and lasted for about 15 minutes. The instructor lead participants and encourage us to remain in the moment. While she was a strong communicator with clear instruction and a gentle deposition (all traits that I consider to be indicative of a great teacher) I have to admit I was not mentally present. Between the 90+ degree weather, bugs crawling all over my legs (and arms), and the sounds of Indianapolis -I could not get out of my head. The entire time I sat in the mediation constant thoughts flowed through my mind. I was thinking, "Wait, it that a bug crawling on my legs" Or "Is my sun block going to hold up against these UV rays ?" etc. Ultimately, this mediation experience served as a valuable lesson for me -- apply "OFF" bug spray and scramble to a shaded spot on the lawn. After the meditation, I visited vendor tables. I absolutely loved the variety of vendors -- from Thai message, chiropractic services, yoga studios, chakras alignments etc. -- I was curious and impressed with offerings. The signature event - yoga -- official began at 6pm. Instructors leading the yoga flow came from various studios. The instructors encourage attendees to not only dig deeper within themselves but to think about the community at large. By the end of the event, I met so many wonderful new people and became reunited with old acquaintances. Everyone should definitely attend Monumental yoga when you have the chance! You won't regret it!
Indy welcomes all and Monumental Yoga proves and embodies that sentiment. This was my first time participating in the event and I was thrilled! There are wellness, holistic and retailers who brave the hot sun all day to share more about their business. It was a great opportunity to discover local businesses and learn about the community. The main class is in the evening and offers a perfect way to end the day with a beautiful view of the monument. Fortunately they set us up on the spoke that is in the shade and all mats face the center. Teachers from various studios around the city collaborate to offer a vibrant flow. Expect a warmup, two dynamic flows (of course a classic sun salutation) and then restorative shapes. I thought I was going to melt into the street. The event is well organized, calm and inviting... even if you're new to yoga, try it. read more
One of the best parts of living in Indy is the sense of community. Were else would shut down roads downtown to allow people to practice a free yoga class together?! Love the sense of togetherness, mindfulness, and celebration of small businesses that this event offers. Would recommend finding a way downtown that does not include parking, as there are no designated lots. This event is free, with vendors selling yoga accessories and food. It will go on rain or shine, so dress for the elements! read more

First, I'll admit my favorite word is free, so when I hear that I can do FREE yoga? Sign. Me. Up. But then it gets better. Not only is the yoga class FREE, but also it's among 3000 other yogis in Monument Circle. How. Freakin'. Cool. read more

What a great community event celebrated right on the Circle in downtown Indianapolis. Yoga village lined the sidewalks offering information about local yoga studios, and selling items to improve your practice. The vinyasa session allowed 6 different teachers to lead with their personal style and helped unite everyone participating. Bring the whole family to experience one of the most inspirational ways to get out for the longest day of the year. read more

Great event for the Indianapolis community! I only attended the yoga class which lasted an hour. You need to get there early because the space without disruption is limited. The yoga is great for a beginner or expert. I really enjoyed the instruction. Also remember to bring your own mat for the yoga class. read more
Tons of fun! It's crowded so you should definitely come early to get a good spot. There was a lot going on but it was a great experience overall, how cool to take over the circle! The acro-yoga was amazing and we got tons of free swag from the village including free yoga class passes at invoke! Will go every year! read more
