Oh god this is the worst Mexican restaurant I have ever been to. I should not have gone on May 5th but it was a friends birthday. We ordered a picture of drinks, and there was not one bit of tequila in that picture of margaritas. Then we waited about 90 minutes to have our orders taken. I asked if I could get the chicken, been and cheese enchiladas but just to make the one chicken a cheese. He said no problem. First it can in corn tortillas and I have never seen that before , then I got one beef and one with a teaspoon of bean and one cheese. I would have sent it back but just ate the beef. The service was just terrible and it was like eating corn patties with sour cream on top, nothing in the wraps except for the beef that I did not order. I stopped by for a quick lunch when I was in the area. I love their salsa. I'm actually shocked at how much salsa I ate! I also enjoyed their shredded chicken tacos and was very impressed with their side of rice. Rice isn't usually something I enjoy but this rice was very flavorful and hit the spot. This is a decent Mexican restaurant - not my favorite by any means as I've been searching for good ones in the university area. Loved the quesabirria tacos. Their salsa is a little bland but they have a couple of spicy options you can order instead - I'd recommend those. The chips were delicious and super fresh. Not a fan of their house margaritas - they tasted like an off the shelf margarita mix. It was very tart and had a green hue, which I thought was super odd. Stoped by this restaurant on my lunch break earlier this week. I must say the staff is rather friendly and the place was really clean. I overly enjoyed the chicken quesadilla. I'm not much of a beans girl, so I opted for double rice. The cheese is amazing and the salsa seems to be made fresh, the rice with cheese dip poured over it is to die for. I recently ordered take out from here and overall I would say they are solid for what they offer. It's greasy Mexican food that is satisfying and inexpensive. I can confirm that it is good for when you've have a few drinks, and I imagine it is probably great for hangovers. There are better Mexican options out there, but if you are close by it is certainly an option to consider. They have a large menu with most of the classic staples. I ordered some taquitos and some quesadillas and they hit the spot. I don't spend a ton of time in the university area but if I found myself nearby I wouldn't hesitate to stop in for a meal. Always seem to be in the mood for Mexican food, and there just seems to be an abundance of restaurants around me. However this place may make my favorite chicken chimichanga, with their white queso on top. Which usually I hate but theirs is delicious! And the rice and beans which if where honest no one really pays attention to; but I do, I love them! Great flavor in the rice! We also also do the bean dip which has the refried beans and queso. I honestly can say anything bad about their food. They recently have remodeled half the restaurant, so I be will curious to see if the remodel the other side so it matches. Or will will it feel like u have two separate restaurants from now on. And our only knock, is that when we get sat in the side not remodeled the service is SLOW! Pretty much no matter what you order it's not fresh like it used to be. This has been a go to for years and years. Last evening I was surprised by a several percent up charge (3.4%??) for card use over cash. I was stunned at the bill that a skinny margarita was $15. There are no prices on the drink menu. I should have asked. My fault. I wouldn't have ordered. Food was delicious as usual, good service. I entered ready to order the chilaquiles that came up via several online searches. Well, they offer shredded chicken or ground beef for their chilaquiles and this is not anything I'm accustomed to. Even if they needed to upcharge to give me a piece of flat steak then I'd take it. The chillaquiles comes with rice and refired beans. Remember I came about 11:40a and they open at 11a? Well, I didn't get fresh rice but rice from last night or two days ago. There were older dark pieces, crunchy pieces and the beans were okay. The verde sauce on the chilaquiles was perfect but the chicken just made it okay. They serve salsa in a carafe and you pour it into a bowl but the server's assistant had his hand all in the bowl so I opted out. All in all it's the usually gringo tex-mex and I love such. I'd return if over that way but I'm not making a special trip. I can also understand how folks feel the chips are stale but again.... that didn't make me score anything lower. Wow, I'm impressed! Coming here from Texas (having lived for years in both Houston and Austin; but originally from California) I have high standards for Mexican food. It's the truth-- "Tex Mex" may sound like a corny Americanized version of Mexican food, but believe me, Texas has one of the highest hispanic populations of any state, and the restaurants don't cook for the gringos-- they cook for their people, and it is so delicious!! Muy, if you will. So, I didn't really have high hopes coming to this restaurant. After Texas, I didn't think it would be very good. Boy was I wrong! I ordered the "Super California" burrito w/chicken for take out. At home, eating with just a fork (I'm a single man, don't judge!), I can honestly say that I enjoyed every bite! Wow the burrito was definitely the size of of my head and I love that. Typically most Mexican restaurants hand you a burrito the size of a Taco Bell cheese roll up and I'm not with the shits. I visit the Monterrey in the University about once a month during lunchtime. People from work had always mentioned it, but from the outside, it doesn't look like much. It's in a strip mall. I decided to try it and once I got in there, I was amazed. They've decorated and themed the inside of this strip mall restaurant very nicely to resemble a Mexican restaurant. It's also divided into separate areas, making each a little more private. I was impressed. They bring you chips and salsa to start like any good Mexican restaurant. They're nothing out of the ordinary, but they always taste so good to whet your appetite. The salsa comes in a little decanter which you can then pour into your salsa bowl(s). It's unnecessary, but the presentation of it is very nice. The food choices are your basic Mexican menu items. I usually get one of the lunch combos. For about $6, you can't go wrong. It comes with a couple of choices, rice, and a side item. My favorite is the combo with the soft chicken taco and chile relleno (which isn't really a stuffed chile, it's more of a pile of mush of cheese and very finely chopped chile, but oh-so-good), with a "salad" on the side consisting of shredded lettuce, tomatoes, and guacamole. Yum. Like I said, the items are only about $6 a person and they really fill you up. For a sit-down lunch restaurant, it's an awesome and delicious deal. read more

I have an authentic Mexican palate. I have tried Mexican food from every region. This place is definitely not authentic, but they give off the air of authenticity. Far too much lettuce and sour cream on everything I ever order, and the vegetarian/vegan options are unfortunate. All across Mexico there are vegan dishes plenty, but here, it was lacking. My partner enjoyed their meal, just fine, said they would come back one more time to try one more dish, but if the use of "fillers" like lettuce and sour cream is still plentiful, then that may be the last time they go. DON'T GO! Go to the one in Matthews, never had an issue with them. So we get there and it's about 20 minutes before anyone pays attention to us. I counted possibly three servers for the whole restaurant so understandably, that's why we were not acknowledged. So we order queso it is the thinnest most terrible queso I've ever had! We showed the hostess because no manager was around and she said that it would be comped but only if they take it off of our table. She proceeded to tell us that they made a bad batch and oh well _/‍(*-*)\_ I have never been anywhere where they took back the food, if you wanted it comped?! Not like we wanted it anyways but usually they say I'm sorry the manager comes by and they just leave it there. When I asked for the manager, they said oh he's busy. The way things were I don't think a manager was on staff. Who knows if it was even comped because they don't have itemized receipts. You know how when fajitas come out to you, you get a fajita facial?! The fajitas came out with absolutely no steam coming from it. My mates food came out after mine. I visited here last night with my cousin and her husband. We sat on the right side of the restaurant. The area seemed kinda tight with all the tables kinda close but it did give it a more homey feel. The restaurant is decorated like your typical Mexican restaurant. Our serve didn't speak good English so making our orders and requests were a little harder at times. The chicken chimichanga I got was good but I wish they gave me more rice since I opted out on beans. My drink was not that good though for some reason it tasted really salty? I didn't drink from the rim either it was through a straw so I thought that was kinda weird. Overall my experience was okay. I came here with my boyfriend because he really wanted Mexican but I'm not a huge fan of this more authentic type of Mexican (more a fan of like chipotle) and it wasn't very crowded inside or in the parking lot which is the first sign I look for when going anywhere new, so I was skeptical. When we were first seated we sat and waited a bit for her to come take our orders and my boyfriend got the combo, I just got a margarita. The main reason I'm not giving this place 5 stars is because they brought out the food before bringing out any drinks which is unheard of, and there was a man (couldn't tell if he was a manager or the owner) just hovering and sitting right by our booth and it made me uncomfortable that he didn't have anything else to do but sit there and watch tv/daydream lol.
