We enjoyed a lovely dinner with a small group on a weeknight. The restaurant is small and divided into a couple of little spaces so it felt intimate and quiet - perfect for catching up! We got the $90 set menu which include 4 courses served family style. The staff were accommodating to a few dietary requirements which were served seamlessly with the rest of the meal. Visited on a Tuesday evening at sat and the far end of the bar so I had a great view of Alex and his team. It was a busy night and the team was working a wonderful 'ballet' in the small kitchen space. You could tell that the chef and his team loved what they did and the quality of the food showed thru. Alex was even able to go out and deliver some of the plates himself which I think he really enjoyed. I was alone so Alex took the time to talk to me and it turned into a very wonderful evening. I had the lamb which was a favorite and prepared to perfection. The wine was good and so was the service. Hopefully I can get back here at least one more time before I leave Sydney. read more

We have walked past this restaurant many times in this foodie part of the world and never ventured in; finally I made the important decision to walk in and make a booking ..... what a super decision that was. Inside one immediately senses a modernness and style about everything about this place. The welcome is warm and the fit out detail is subtle, yet so impactful - this place has that finesse with an X factor. We are seated at the front of the restaurant looking over Macleay Street and it is so delightful to have the glass doors open.....dining with fresh air is a treat. We are weekend diners with a booking on the 8.30pm sitting..... We had the most amazing dining experience and here's what this wonderful dining experience consisted of: - Charcuterie plate of four delicious cured meats; - Cured kingfish with pickled cucumber, horseradish & lime; - Grilled prawns with a delightful pepper sauce; - Snapper with fennel & sea succulent; - Crispy skin chicken with lettuce, capers & anchovy; - Spiced lamb rump with kale & goats curd; and - Potatoes with olives & capers..... We had the 'die hard' debate of what was best.....nothing was excluded, very positive and in the end the boys though the lamb and the girls the chicken, however it was like a photo finish...so let me be clear and say every dish got at least an 8 out of 10....so we were debating at the margins...... this was foodie heaven. And the wine list is excellent....we had the French Rose and the Victorian Heathcote Syrah....the wine list has been well constructed. This is a wonderful restaurant....one of the best. read more

OK I really would rather give 4.5 stars, since 5 stars is reserved for the highest stratosphere of dining, but, seriously, Monopole is outstanding. A dinner for two in this dark woody masculine and busy little spot. Brent Savage, mastermind of this, Yellow and Bentley, has done a great job. The innovative sound deadening apparatus was very effective in what was a bustling and could have been very noisy space. The cocktail selection is good, and the mixologists suitably eclectic sporting the obligatory beard and attitude. The menu is interesting - all designed to be shared, or not. We opted to share and I have mixed feelings about that, mainly because some of it I wanted it all!! So, kicked off with a martini, big tick for the extra dry with a twist, although the Cosmo she had needed a touch more sweetness, which was added on request. A good recommendation for a wine, although not at all what I was expecting, was well received. French wines, takes a while to get to know, and I ain't there yet, so I was glad of the help. Entree - well, what to do, just had to have a lot. Oysters, lump, juicy and delicious to start. Then, for me the standout of the night, house-cured beef pastrami with house pickles on a long cracker with some creamy stuff I couldn't place - turned out to be goats curd - who knew? Seriously, died and went to heaven. Could have eaten a plate full of them - the beef was so darn beefy, and the pickles exquisite. Really regretted sharing that one, I can tell you, as there were two to the serving. Followed this with pork shoulder terrine, although to be honest I thought it more of a pate, with woodfire toasted bread and some cream fraiche. Bam!! Another winner. Damn. Mains - we had snapper grilled with endive, charred cabbage and pickled onion, and beef cheeks with I can't remember what because by then I HAD died and gone to heaven. Melt in the mouth pull apart with the fork I mean the cheeks were SO tender and tasty. By now we were too full for a desert but I had one anyway, the rhubarb sorbet with poached rhubarb, ginger and ginger curd. The sommelier brought us a couple of late harvest riesling on the house as one of our dishes had been a bit cold - dead set legend!! All in all very impressive, the more so when compared with a meal the prior week at Rockpool Bar and Grill, which cost about 50% more and we enjoyed at least 50% less. Excellent service! The atmosphere is honestly a bit overcrowded, nothing elegant. The gentleman who served my table was very professional not the friendliest person but he made us feel comfortable. The food came out pretty fast and we were impressed. The presentation of our mains was average, the chicken was below average. Looking at it, it didnt have a wow factor. The mains tasted good (the chicken and the lamb) but not superb, they had a very bland undertone to them and honestly the chicken was a bit disappointing, it didn't have the crispy skin, it was oily, though it had flavour. The Deserts were very well thought-out, in particular the coconut mouse was brilliant, being the highlight of the night. The mandarin cake was really not the greatest, even though mandarin usually goes well with chocolate, their chocolate was too strong, creating a bitter taste. I really don't know how they have two chef hats, really hope they live up to the expectations in the future. I liked the experience but would not return here. read more

This restaurant has been on my radar for about 12 months. Not sure why the universe waited this long but ohhhhh Monople! Everything about this restaurant is amazing. Decor, staff, food, wine list are all perfectly perfect. A charming and relaxed restaurant with a killer team cooking and serving. We sat up on the bar and enjoyed watching everyone work away on our drinks and food. The bottle of Frick Riesling was a perfect addition to the meal. So the true hero at Monopole is the food. We had the set menu and were blown away. Seriously delicious food cooked with extreme care and skill. We are talking possibly the best food I have eaten in a long long while from starts to dessert perfection was served up on our plates. My highlight was the Snapper with corn 2 ways and dehydrated olives! The dessert however really kicked it in over drive with insane almond jelly, soaked peaches and candied peppercorn. Went for a romantic birthday dinner and notified them well in advance of the occasion requesting a nice seat but was placed in a mediocre spot with a chair that had no backrest. No fun candle celebration or any mention of his bday, pretty weak. Food was nicely plated and what you'd expect of a high end restaurant- small, flavorful, light, tasty, satisfying. Food and cocktails were great, service could have been more thoughtful for the price we were paying. Being rushed to leave the restaurant is not a nice feeling. We both really enjoyed our evening here and most of the food was absolutely delicious. The standouts were the snapper with pickled celery, snowpeas, and the scallops ceviche with charred avocado, corn. Food and service was mostly fantastic. A couple of small things: I got a few surprises when my meal came out different to what was on the menu e.g, the beef tartare with mushrooms, the mushrooms were powdered mushrooms which wasn't listed. Then later on when we had the fillet of beef with prawn, it was prawn shavings. Both these dishes left me disappointed because I felt mislead by the menu. Also really difficult to take a good photo because of the mood lighting and I didn't want to be disturbing the neighbouring patrons with the flash, who were sitting just a little too close to me with the way the table were laid out. They were definitely listening to our conversations. Lastly, I felt with how the restaurant carried itself, that my plate should have been cleared after each dish. Sharing and all the sauces made it a tad harder to really experience each dishes flavour. We only got one plate clearing for the very last dish. All in all a very pleasant evening for 2 @$110 including sparkling water. I would recommend you go to monopole to try the interesting range of dishes but just be aware of the points mentioned above. Dining out with a couple of friends here. Find a seat to the rear of the restaurant, almost like a booth style right next to the kitchen and take it all in. It's small, but not cramped. It's got remarkable sound baffling in the ceiling which makes it not too noisy so you can hear your friends but not the people on the next table. It has muted colours with flashes of yellow. The service is patient and understanding, they explain each of the dishes and are happy to answer any questions. They're also happy to direct you in what to eat if you don't want to make any decisions. The food is fantastic, comes out on share plates and is well presented with great flavours. I can't recommend this place high enough with a great vibe to it. read more

If there's anything I like more than a Wine Bar, it's a Wine Bar. So, it's no surprise I've fallen in love with Potts Point's newest Wine Bar and Restaurant, Monopole. Mr N and I took refuge from the stormy Sydney day at Monopole and proceeded to spend the next 5 hours caught in a parallel universe of sorts, where time stood still and we entered what can only be likened to a wine and food coma. Situated on busy Macleay Street, Monopole is an oasis of calm. Its glam industrial chic interior features grey metals and dark rich woods, with the open kitchen we've come to expect these days in trendy restaurant fit outs. Boasting a wine list that reads more like a book and offering over 500 rare and boutique wines from around the globe, this is my kind of paradise. Sommelier, Nick Hildebrandt, you have done yourself proud. But, not content with offering just a high calibre wine list, Monopole ups the stakes and offers food of an equally high standard. Brent Savage has gone all out preparing a casual 'share plate' style of menu, along the lines of the food we've come to expect from the Bentley Restaurant and Bar crew, though with slightly more relaxed flair. I decide to bestow the honour of wine choice on Mr N this day and he doesn't disappoint. We start with Chassagne Montrachet and we end with a robust red, The Nebb from McLaren Vale. Boy was I glad I left the wine choice in Mr N's capable hands! Meanwhile, we go about ordering our feast of the non-liquid kind. We choose: * Charcuterie - a selection of 4 house cures and pickles * Grilled Baby Sweet Corn, Tamarind Yoghurt * Shaved Heirloom Vegetables, Baby Pink Fir Potatoes & Buttermilk Whey Dressing * Calamari, Macadamia and Celtuce * Grilled Lamb Shoulder, Ricotta & Leek Wow, we are suitably impressed. Rather than the dishes coming out at once, each dish is served individually, allowing you to savour the flavours of each plate. The wait staff also explain each dish to you as it is served, which adds to the experience. We finish our savoury courses and one look at the dessert menu confirms we absolutely cannot make a choice. So, naturally, we order both: * Nectarine & Sorbet, Brown Butter Curd * Whisky Chocolate Mousse, Sour Cherry & Granita A-mazing. If you asked me to pick a favourite, I could not. I think it was about this point, I realised Monopole was really something special. Not only is the food and wine exquisite, but the wait staff are knowledgeable and guide you along the journey. I liked the look and feel of this place. The wine list was a little too heavy on the French side of thing for my taste, but I was able to find a few interesting Shiraz that they open and poured by the glass even though they were not on the BTG menu. The food was very good. The Charcuterie plate was solid although the duck was very salty. I had the lamb with smoked yogurt (never had smoked yogurt before). The meat was fantastic but the yogurt a little over the top with smoke (maybe just a tiny amount on the side would have been enough. Really enjoyed our experience at Monopole. Initially, we sat at the kitchen bar, but it was so hot from the stove flames we had to move. Don't sit up here. The food was outstanding and it was a nice progressive meal, not rushed but also not too long between dishes. Interesting wine list too. The cured pastrami entree was awesome. And the meal finished really strong with the mandarin sorbet desert. Don't pass on the beetroot either. Will definitely be back soon read more

I went by myself to monopole for a drink before I had dinner at Billy Kwong. I tried to break the ice w the Asian bartender. She was as cold as the martini I finally ordered. I asked what was her specialty drink she makes and she COULDN'T suggest nothing. I then asked what vodka drink she makes well. Once again she couldn't offer a suggestion. She needs to get off her high house and SERVE AND REMEMBER WE ARE THE CUSTOMER. I didn't give her the time of day the rest of the night. By the way Billy Kwong was such a treat. This is by far an exquisite gem of a restaurant in the Potts Point neighborhood that has excelled in the art of French dining. We had the 7 course degustation from the Monopole menu with wine pairings and the added cheese course- and in no way did the food, the service, nor the atmosphere of this fine dining establishment dissappoint. From our server who introduced each course, to the gentleman who chimed in at times with descriptions and pourings of the restaurants world class wine selections, to the gentleman who replaced our flatware and plates- the staff worked as a seamless team who only heightened and amazed our knowledge of delicious food, sated our palates, and created an experience of joy and wonder. I took my partner to Monopole for his birthday. It was a lovely experience, the restaurant decor is dark and moody but the service is light and friendly. We had the tasting plate menu for $65 a head which consisted of seven dishes. We also choose some wine from their extensive wine list. Each time a course came out the waiters would explain what it was. First course was cured meats - duck, pork and rangers valley tri tip (I don't even know what that last one is!) with bread and olive oil. Next up was cured trevally with pickled cabbage, horseradish and finger lime. The meat dishes came next - beef tartare, snapper and crisp skin chicken served with asparagus with mustard and pistachio cream. Desert was pumpkin ice cream with chocolate ganache, mandarin and salted pepitas. We enjoyed every single dish and left feeling happy and satisfied! read more

I thought it was the perfect restaurant to unwind after work and I was right, it has a very calm and cool vibe about it. They have a really great selection of share plates on the menu for light to medium eaters, but if you are not in the mood for a meal as such, I recommend coming here just for a glass of wine and nibbles at the bar. They have an extensive wine list and the most beautiful creamy rich cheeses (and Iggy's bread yum!) - The perfect wine bar! It's also a really great date night spot, so I will definitely visit again with my boyfriend. First up; we shared the Iggy's bread & house made butter (really safe haha), if you haven't tried this before definitely give it a go, it's fluffy and chewy at the same time. The cured beef pastrami, was a favourite! Great complementary flavours and textures. The snapper was cooked just right and went beautifully with the pumpkin puree. For dessert, we had the strawberries & cream, basil & milk crumb - it was ok, but it didn't leave an impression unfortunately. On the other hand, the Soumaintrain cheese was so creamy and smooth I was suffocating myself with it. We didn't order a lot of food but we were so full by the end of it, probably from all the bread. I cannot imagine why anyone would order sardines (!!!) and I was specifically warned against ordering the saviche sardines - so eat at your own risk! Overall I really liked this place and am very curious about the other dishes on the menu (minus the sardines) so I will be back to try them very soon. Enjoy! Excellent food and brilliant idea with half bottles of wine. In Sydney we love our choice. This place gives you both. Each dish is unique balancing flavour with artistic creation. Starting with the chargrilled baby sweet corn & citrus mace yoghurt the flavours are distinct yet subtle, next we moved to the pork belly,prawn black garlic with orange vinaigrette. This dish balances a rich pork belly with the tangy citrus. We combined the meal with a brilliant French red by the half bottle... Finished off with a selection of cheeses. How do you finish any better? Only path I assume is with a dark, rich, cherry coloured Shiraz! Please don't change the format...we can't get enough... read more

The food was great, so were the pairings. The food came out slow, which was ok for a 5 course meal. The only reason this is getting a 2 is that the server, Leah was rude. We had a table of 8 and we asked for the check to be split in 2. She asked me if I wanted a calculator. It was patronizing and rude. They might have had a busy day as I have heard good stories about Monopole - or maybe they don't like bigger tables that much. We were with the 7 of us and luckily it was with friends and not for business, our table was really 'cosy' with the seats very close to each other. If it was a business dinner it would have been awkward. The Staff was friendly but keen on selling the menu - which didn't appeal to our table so we ordered a bunch of individual items. The bread we ordered was old, very old. The Grilled Sourdough served with the Chicken Liver Parfait was not just old, but burned as well. The bread was mainly black and when we asked the Staff about it, we were told this is the way they serve it. Which is a shame because the burned taste of the bread was definitely stronger than the Parfait - which tasted great. read more

We started the night being 3 ppl my self my wife and my aunt which she only eat fish. My wife and I wanted the the tasting plates at 70$ x2 but since my aunt doesn't eat meat, she choose the fish a la carte. They didn't let her order from the menu a la carte. We all had to take the tasting menu. The chef didn't want to do an exception as she is a pescatarian. She couldn't stay to eat even though she was taking fish a la carte. She had to go to a other restaurant to eat since she wasn't having the same thing as us witch I regretted staying cuz there were only two plates out of the 7 that were good and the dessert was awful ! The only good thing about this restaurant was that the water boy would pass by quite often cuz it was really hot in the store at least I got my waters worth!! read more

We were at Monopole celebrating a birthday with a bunch of gals. After amazing photos and reviews we had browsed, we couldn't be more excited to sample the menu and the wine! However the experience was pretentious, and while food was interesting, servings were intended for models on bootcamp, and the service was highly rigid and unaccommodating. The major letdown was service - we were there to celebrate a birthday, this place serves 2 desserts only, embarasses the hell out of you by spoiling your surprise for the bday girl to her face, and after all that aboslutely forbids you to have a birthday cake. There was no human element to it. I appreciate the freezer was too small to accommodate a Messina gelato cake, so we offered to have the cake first. But after waiting 10mins for it to be served, I was told by the manager he wasn't going to serve it...just out of policy, which no one bothered to mention when I brought the cake in. We were happy to pay cakeage, but it was $14pp, clearly a stupid price to pay. Now this is all with the birthday girl sitting there, obviously with her surprise ruined and feeling v disappointed. When we said we didn't know the policy and if they could make an exception as we clearly didn't bring a freezer with us, he flatly refused, even when we said no actual service was needed and we would just take the cake out of the box and serve it ourselves. Apart from the cake drama...service was unfriendly, the waiter who served us was not attentive to pouring wine at all. The food quality was good, but not spectacular, and left the "cool" factor to do the heavy lifting when it came to the size of the bill. We were also shortchanged - the waiter didn't bother returning change from our cash thinking it was tips. Tips are meant for good service. He assumed too much. read more

We went here with another foodie couple, which was lucky as there is so much to try at Monopole. There are two ways to order here: choose from their plates menu or try 5-8 of them via tasters menu. We went for the left side of the menu (plates) and between the 4 of us polished off 6 of them. The dishes aren't huge, but they all seemed to come in portions of 4 pieces of whatever so dividing them up was easy. Maybe they did that for our table on purpose, who knows? The waitress suggested we get 8-9, but 6 (plus an order of cheese instead of dessert) was just right. These dishes are sequenced in order of richness so we ordered across the spectrum. Standouts were the scallop ceviche, smoked octopus and snapper. A comment on the wine list and sommelier. A good comprehensive menu, and we were looking for a pinot noir to accompany our diverse set of dishes. I'm not not a huge fan of Aussie pinots, so we went French (duh!). The first Burgundy we asked for was out, but that introduced us to Monopole's esoteric but highly knowledgeable sommelier. He set us up with two different obscure but outstanding Burgundies that went beautifully with our meal. Overall a terrific meal with stimulating innovative dishes in the modern Aussie style, a great wine list guided by a highly knowledgeable sommelier, and a cool way to order dishes. We were skeptical due to a lot of the reviews, but my partner really wanted to do the wine pairing Monopole dinner, so we went and had a SPECTACULAR evening. We arrived at 6:30 hungry and thirsty, and left around 10:30 sated and a little more than buzzed. The meal was amazing, the service top notch, and the staff VERY knowledgable, approachable, and friendly. What was even more impressive was how the staff worked as a team. Although our server was there checking on us through every course, everyone from the other servers to the bartender to who we thought might be the manager/owner/host was part of the experience, serving wine, clearing plates, serving the next course and engaging us with details about the food and wine and our overall experience. People who write that the service was slow were obviously looking for a different, "dine and dash" experience, which this is not. Plan on taking your time, enjoy and savor every dish, every sip of wine. In an "experience" culture, this restaurant is top notch and ranks as one of my top three dining experiences, from the service to the food to the wine to presentation, it def deserves 5 STARS or more! read more

Wow - just wow. What a pleasant dining experience. My wife and I had a leisurely dinner here last night - we opted for the nightly tasting menu. 7 courses ranging from house-cured meats to fish, meat and dessert. The wine list could take hours to navigate - so many interesting choices. But - the sommelier to the rescue! Helpful, knowledgeable and made two outstanding recommendations to pair with our dinner. The restaurant is dark and the noise level is on the low side, meaning it's intimate and possible to have a conversation. We were walk-ins (we're staying in the neighborhood) but there was no problem finding us a table. Service was polite and professional. Some may question the "5 star" rating - thinking that it should be reserved for the ne-plus-ultra and rarefied stratosphere of fine dining. To me, though, the sum total of the experience, how much I enjoyed the meal, is what really matters. read more
