I'm quite enamoured with Monkey Nest! I used to work from coffee shops on a regular basis back in NC - and every one of them I went to was nice, but this place really has the atmosphere, seating, availability of tables and food bit DOWN. Wireless signal is great, too. All of the food I've ordered so far has been great. I've had the tomato-mozzerella panini, and a greek salad with chicken. They were good sized portions (especially the salad!), and while the chicken was of the re-heated variety, it was still pretty good. It had yummy seasoning. The coffee I've had - and I tend to order soy drinks - have been very good as well. The espresso isn't overly strong but has a nice bite. I also ordered the banana chai, and was really happy with it. I looooove the combination, and was sad that I hadn't tried it before! I'm curious about lots more of their menu, so I will definitely be back! The one thing I can say - if you want to make a phone call.. or talk on the phone... not the best place. I always feel like an annoyance to most coffee shops for example quacks or epoch (north loop). So I chose to do my business at a place that is welcoming. Monkey Nest is awesome. I love the Burnet area, and MN fits right in with the scene. The coffee is delicious and the staff has always been so friendly. I see some earlier reviews where service seems to be an issue, but those were some earlier reviews. They must have gotten the kinks worked out, because I have not had any trouble as service has always been fast and courteous (probably thanks to Yelp!). I usually just order cafe au lait, and they make it up just right with the perfect milk to coffee ratio. I have also tried their signature drink and my wife's favorite, the Spicy Monkey, a mocha spiced up with what I imagine to be chili powder and cayenne pepper. It has just the right amount of spice for a nice warm flavor and a quick little zing on the back of the throat (that's what she said). The atmosphere at MN is super chill. I have been in many times, and even when the place is a little bit crowded I've never had any trouble finding a spot to sit with the abundance of chairs, tables, and couches. Also, the place is always so calm and quiet. It is a great location to bring in your notebook, Ipad, or whatever you may have to just sit down and chill, study, or get some work done without any disturbances. I have not tried their sandwiches yet, but they have a pretty awesome menu, so I definitely will soon enough. The only thing keeping me from giving 5 stars is I think that they are just a little bit pricey. I understand it is organic, fair trade, and the drinks have a personal touch, but price is certainly a factor for me, and I would put in an extra to maybe see some cheaper daily specials or just a cup of joe for less than or equal to $1.50. This is hands down my favorite coffee shop and new daily hangout in Austin. It is conveniently located near to my home in Crestview, has great parking, a killer decor and vibe, plenty of plug ins for my laptop and a great, great patio. From the moment I walked in, the barista's were very nice and explained the menu and served me one of the best organic lattes I have ever had. It's such a cool place with great coffee, serving Elsi's breakfast tacos and my favorite treats from Russell's bakery. Monkey's Nest, I travel a little extra to come to your location because it hands down beats in service, product and atmosphere, any of the coffee shops that are closer to my neighborhood. read more

I live just north of UT and it definitely worth the drive to Monkey Nest if you're looking for a great space to work or just chill in. The interior definitely doesn't have the quirky appeal known to other Austin coffee shops but they had no shortages of tables with comfortable chairs so I don't have anything to complain about. I also liked how there didn't seem to be a 'type' of clientele; there's nothing I hate more than walking into an establishment and feeling like you are unwanted. I have yet to try the food here but as far as beverages go, they haven't let me down. They have some of the best brewed coffee I've tried and most recently I got the Spicy Monkey Mocha - if you're adventurous with your coffee then I highly recommend you try it! I've also had good service experiences, the employees were more than accommodating to questions and my drinks have always been made very quickly. I've been to nearly a dozen different local coffeeshops in Austin over the course of three years (Pacha, Houndstooth, Medici x2, Thunderbird's, Flightpath, JP's Java et al) and none of them have come close to what Monkey Nest offers. First of all, I am an espresso drinker. I have not had the spicy monkey latte that seems to be this place's namesake. But I've always felt that the true measure of a coffeeshop is how they pull their espressos. Espressos are the bloodline of any coffeeshop; if the espresso isn't good, nothing else is going to be good either. Just like an Italian restaurant that can't make a solid plate of spaghetti probably can't be trusted with an eggplant florentine. Local coffeeshop baristas tend to take pride in the fact that they "hand pull" their espressos, meaning they manually grind the right amount of beans and then pack the grinds by hand before running the machine. This is often pitted against chains like Starbucks who have automated machines that put out perfect espressos every time with the simple touch of a button, regardless of the (non-)skill of the barista. The sad fact is that a flawless espresso is very hard to pull by hand, and very hard to do consistently at that, and Starbucks is simple better than your neighborhood coffeeshop at guaranteeing you a flawless espresso, every time. The first time I went to Monkey Nest, I ordered an espresso and expected the mediocrity that I was used to getting from Austin's other local coffeeshops--I still want to believe that hand pulled espressos are a nobler path. It came out...perfect. I went back a different day and was chagrined to find that the barista who had made my previous flawless espresso wasn't there, but I ordered an espresso anyway, again expecting a mediocre pull that is so common. Again...perfect. I kept going back, ordering espressos, and FIVE different baristas served me impeccable espressos. In the world of coffee drinkers who prize the integrity of local establishments but who are much less discerning about coffee quality, a single skilled barista is a gem. An entire team of skilled baristas, on the other hand, is an indicator that this is a coffeeshop that knows how to train baristas, and therefore takes their mission seriously to go the hand made route...AND do it well. Monkey Nest is a local Austin coffee house with a lot of seating. I didn't even walk through the whole place since it's so big. The best part is that there are plenty of power outlets...hallelujah! I tried their Iced Spicy Mocha (made with cayenne pepper). At first I just thought it was average, but after a few more sips the spices kicked in and it was definitely a unique drink. You know I really wanted to love this place. The iced Thai coffee is excellent, but the bagel was mediocre at best. The cream cheese came in a kraft mayo-like tube and the "toasted" bagel was more just warm and hard. The guy who served me was super friendly though and the dessert empanada was yummy, so I overlooked the bagel. I came here to work on my laptop. I thought since they so prominently advertise WIFI that it'd be no problem. I know the WIFI is free, I don't want to take up a table all day so as a rule I don't spend more than a couple hours at a coffee shop and I always buy something there. I use my iPad with wifi to connect to my laptop for work. I need at least halfway decent wifi for it to work, and I've never have to hard-wire it at any other place I've worked before. The last thing I want is to lug around another cord with me. Not only that but I kept getting "so-and-so wants to connect to your ipad/laptop" messages literally every minute or two making it impossible to work. There was no opting out of it or blocking it. I'm sure the bagel could be a fluke or the wifi could be better with less people in the shop, but they certainly can't accommodate the number of people who seem to be cram-packed into this place. read more

Our first time here. We ordered two lattes. I dont remember the names of the lattes. One of them had chocolate chips and cinnamon. The other one with Cayanne pepper & something else. This one was my favorite. The staff seem to be knowledgeable of their menus. They have plenty of tables to sit down. Food: Monkey nest special on ciabatta was pretty good, I like that they had a variety of breads to choose from. The cashier recommended me the spicy monkey mocha since it is popular, but I thought it was too spicy for me. The sweetness was the right amount though. Study friendly? They do have a lot of tables available but I thought the tables were too small and being able to sprawl my stuff around is high priority. The shop was well lit and also has plenty of outlets. For Pokemon go players: At the risk of sounding like a dork, this place isn't a pokestop even though the monkey nest mural right next to it is (it is so close to being within the vicinity it's upsetting), so sadly I could not collect pokeballs while studying :( read more

I live in the South Lamar area and have tried many coffee shops, with many of those being to loud or only having outdoor seating, I decided to drive up North to Monkey Nest Coffee to give it a try about 4 months ago and the rest is history. Every time I walk into Monkey Nest I feel welcomed by the staff. The coffee shop has many tables and a great atmosphere with many wonderful beverages. One thing I wanted to mention was the quality of the staff. They are all very friendly, especially Victoria. She is full of life and is a very sweet person and works hard regardless if they are busy or not. They recently added an assortment of breakfast tacos that are pretty tasty as well. I have to say, I'm a fan. As another reviewer mentioned, it draws a good mix of crowd, not overly hipster or posh. I like the layout of the place a lot - nice shaded patio out front, large middle area with a mix of tables and comfy chairs and couches, and a quiet back room for more studious types. There is a large gas fireplace that sits between the middle and back rooms, which should come in handy in January. Also, in the back room, there is a large (52" ?) LCD that has HDMI and VGA cables attached and ready to use. The room is set up very well to use it as a projector to talk biz. From what I have tried, the coffee is solid. (Well it's liquid of course, but a tasty version). They also cater breakfast tacos and have some fine looking pastries. The only major disappointment to the place is the sandwiches. I've had two, and both were sub-par. Not birdie sub-par either - we're talking eagle. Bottom line - enjoy the coffee, the great setup, the good location, but avoid the sandwiches. read more

The Italian creme cake and madeleine I tried were both dry and flaky (I expected creamy and buttery texture), and tasted like they had sit in the refrigerator for some time. There are a lot of things to like about this place. I've never had to wait long to order and there are always places to sit both inside and out. Plus, the patio is dog friendly! The coffee is good and usually they make some fancy leaf design with the foam - a talent that will never cease to impress me. Easily entertained? Sure, but it's still awesome. I've ordered a few food items here and they have been meh. The Monkey Nest special is a good sandwich. The salad I ordered was wtf. It was a HUGE plate of greens and like, four apple slices and a few cranberries and walnuts sprinkled on. It almost didn't look intentional. Oops, we accidentally spilled a few toppings on your gigantic bed of plain greens! Sorry! Ugh. I would avoid it. I tried a quiche once which was also lackluster. Apparently it was only the dude's second time making it though, because he came over to ask me how it was. I tried to be honest but I have trouble telling someone that I don't like what they just cooked. I think it was obvious, though, since I ate like two bites of it. The owners of this place are very nice, and the baristas here (unlike many local coffee shops in Austin) are very courteous. They have lots of creative coffee options here, but most of them are very sweet sugary drinks. I got the Honey Luv Latte, which was delicious. Still my favorite is the Spicy Monkey Mocha. They make it with cayenne and it's amazing. If you're only going once, definitely get the spicy mocha. Overall, good drinks, great place to study or work (lots of tables), and nice staff. read more

Have you even gone into a coffee bar and ordered a hot chocolate and it seemed like they served you steamed hot chocolate milk? Hot chocolate is supposed to look dark and chocolaty, but most of the places that I have been in Austin, Texas [The Monkey Nest included], the hot chocolate looks like chocolate milk. 1.33 ounces of chocolate per 8 ounces of milk is the standard recipe for hot chocolate. If you pay $3 dollars for a 16 ounce cup of hot chocolate and they give you about .33 cents worth of chocolate in your cup, the monkey has it hands in your wallet. Monkey beware! read more

Decided to try this place out and I will not be going back. Was recommended the the iced blended banana chai drink and it was pretty gross. I asked the barista if it was real bananas, so I assumed it was fresh.....not the case. It tasted stale and freezer burned. I asked my husband to try a sip and he didn't like it whatsoever, either. I had to toss it since the stale taste was that overwhelming. My husbands iced tea didn't taste like tea either. It was pretty watery. I told him the tea at teavana set the standard high since that's what we drink at home. The most interesting part of the coffee buying experience was the conversation I had with the barista. She noticed I had a usaa card and asked how I got on....ok no biggie I'll answer.....my hubby was in the military, but is in school now. Well she goes off and rambles on the pay stipend my husband receives...I felt a little awkward and agree to the number she mentions, "yea it's something like that." Perhaps this coffee shop can assist the baristas in what's acceptable small talk, bringing up pay and whatnot was very uncool esp with customers waiting in line and listening to the barista run her mouth on what my husband receives............ read more

Love this funky coffee shop soooo close to my house. It's not as close as Thunderbird, but way better. They have a great menu, friendly and homey atmosphere, and NO attitude! Prices are good and service is prompt. the Spicy Brown Sugar Latte is my fave, I get it every time I go, along with either a bran or pumpkin muffin. the only downside to MN is the parking situation. No matter when I go, it seems like every spot is taken. and when you go inside, there's always a decent amount of people but it doesn't seem like enough people to take up all those spots! and they don't turn over either.
