After having been on the road for several weeks already and not always eating the best food throughout the day, I decided to treat myself to a vegetable-forward dinner. A quick internet research led me to this place and I made a reservation for one. I wasn't disappointed at all. In fact, this was the best meals I've had in a long time. What I loved most about this place is how they structured their menu: vegan and vegetarian dishes first and then - almost as an afterthought- come the meat dishes. Well done! To get to Postlingberg you need to take a narrow gauge tram from the Hauptplatz up to the little tiny village. It's more of a destination than a great restaurant. On a clear day you look out from the restaurant to across the Danube to Linz and the land beyond it. In winter there's a cozy dining room that is quintessentially old Austria. The food was good but very meat oriented so unless you got a vegetarian dish there were no vegetables to be had. It was tasty but nothing remarkable. When entering, we were told we needed reservations but as we were ready to depart, the Maitre d'/host, Anton, said he would find us a table. The service was excellent and the dinning area is elegant. This is the 3rd high end restaurant we've dined at since being in Austria and we enjoyed the food here the most. My local trout with lentils had perfect texture and seasoning. My husband, who had the stuffed cabbage, said it's the best meal he has had since arriving in Austria over a week ago. We also had the pumpkin foam (I think it was a little frothy cream on top?) soup which was very good; the pumpkin was subtle. We gave it 5 stars for the service and that we like the food better than the Michelin rated restaurant we had eaten at earlier on our trip.

I had the Strangolapreti which was a great balance of light and filling - spinach and cheese dumplings; the calamari was tender with a red sauce with just the right amount of heat; the veal picatta was tender; fresh bread and mozzarella; and the pasta was freshly made and al dente. First good thing was that all the tables were reserved but they were going to hold a table for us. Then our group increased and they accommodated that even though they were packed. Two men running the front of the restaurant had both a friendly and professional manner combined with a great dry sense of wit. Example, when one of us was getting in the way of a service he said "make like a statue". or when one of us ask if they had a restroom he reared back and said "what kind restaurant do you think we have"... twice.
