Some days you just want to eat like a king. Maybe not a rich king but a king with an appetite for hot AYCE food. This place does the trick for a reasonable price. The main focus obviously is the Mongolian BBQ bowls but they do have little sides to also balance it out. The quality of ingredients will never be as high as most restaurants but are at least as good as the ones that pack the malls in LA. The decor, while clean enough, is a bit drab and spartan which is not what I want when i'm going to an AYCE place, it's already depressing enough. A little variety could go a long way to making this place more appealing. I feel that the place has got very comfortable with how things are and haven't changed its approach to its routine. I'm not asking for high dining with foie gras, but maybe mix up the veggies, make the trays more accessible, keep the options stocked better rather than change them out when empty. Best Mongolian wok barbecue you will find in LA, or anywhere really. I've been coming here for 20 years (most of my life), for good reason. Like most Mongolian BBQ style restaurants, you choose your own ingredients and take it to the circular stove wok where the two experienced chefs (both have been there as long as I can remember) chop up your food with machetes and cook it in front of you. The ingredients are fresh and there's good variety - meats include chicken, beef, turkey, lamb, and veggies range from carrot strings to diced pineapple and water chestnuts. It can be a bit expensive at $12 a plate, but well worth the money. You will walk away full and satisfied. I'm actually getting hungry just thinking about it. EAT HERE. I love finding these type of mom and pop places where the food is delish and a also a great value... much better than going to some chain (panda express) where a meal is 2000 calories. For 10 bucks, i can get a healthy super filling meal with tons of veggies.....soup, dessert, rice... super yummy homemade sesame breads (MUST HAVE THESE)...kimchi...salad - the list goes on. It's definitely good but there ARE rules you must learn. I'm here to tell you them: Rule 1: There is All you can eat OR one time around. The former is costlier. Rule 2: All you can eat comes with bread AND rice, egg rolls and soup, one timer does not. Rule 3: You CAN get a to go box for the one timer but NOT for All you can eat. (This makes NO sense to me since you're paying more and if you have food left over, why waste it? Now, I know what the owner is thinking, "Hey they'll just eat and eat, then make a giant to go plate when they leave. Well, so what? This happens with the one timers and they're paying less but I digress...) Rule 4: You MUST only use one bowl at a time. There is a review here from 2013 where you could use two bowls but no more. The signs are posted saying so. Rule 5: In order to get your fill of the one timer route, you must overfill your bowl. It seems there's an art to this but that's what you must do. They make some weird rules and then to get your money's worth, you have to act a little greedy or YOU lose in the end. This is a mind trip for people who aren't used to acting ravenous around food. Eventually, you get used to it. Rule 6: Use the garlic sauce, it really helps with flavor!! Same with BBQ oil and lemon water. Do your own research too for combos for sauces. I'm not going to bother with a review on the food, since it's pretty much the same as the Great Khan review I gave in terms of taste. I will, however, comment on how this place is different from the mall joints. Well, in a nutshell, Mongol King offers an all-you-can-eat option for only $2 more (lunch). I am unsure how the prices differ at dinner-time. Another positive difference is the fact that unlike the mall joints, you stay with your bowl all the way up to the grill...YES, that means you control not only the bowl contents, but the noodle amount and the combination of sauces as well. Oh and there is no "Bowl pressing Nazi" to discourage you from pushing down on the meat.....I guess with all-you-can-eat, that issue becomes a moot point. The choice of sauces is nearly identical to Great Khan - from the spice options, to the lemon water to the "BBQ Oil" (which, BTW is a must to prevent the meal from being too 'dry') It personally took me two visits to get my sauce "combo" just right. 2 Regular, 2 Mongo, 2 Lemon Water, 2 BBQ oil, 1 Garlic sauce. After having driven by lots of times on a South Bay visit while not hungry, we finally came to eat here. Hooray! Good decision. One of the best Mongolian bbq places I've ever been to, because: 1. they have lamb. And also turkey/chicken, pork, beef, and tofu. But the lamb is hard to find. 2. the soup is amazing! Usually it's just some bland radish-water kind, but this was actually very good, with little wonton strips in it. 3. the service is great. The people are nice. 4. the place is clean and well-maintained. No, seriously, it matters. 5. it's a great deal, whether you go for the $12 all you can eat option or the $10 single-bowl option. Both come with rice, buns, appetizer/salad, and dessert (jello, ice cream, brownie). The Asian salad is *really good*. Choose that over the standard egg rolls/fried thingy. 6. the variety of veggies is good: when we went, we had the option of loading up on cabbage, baby corn, water chestnuts, onions, cilantro, mushrooms, zucchini, bell peppers, celery, julienned carrots, and a couple of other things I've forgotten. 7. you decide if you want to add a load of noodles on top or not, not the guy who fries it for you. Also you can customize your own seasoning mix, not just telling the guy if you want it mild or spicy and with garlic or not. I can't say enough nice things about this restaurant. It is one of the cleanest Asian restaurants in the south bay. The food is consistently fresh, service is quick and friendly . Since its all you can eat, the prices are very good.but I can only eat one bowl, so they do offer a one bowl price (unheard of at most all u can eats) . The eggrolls and wontons delicious. My friend's son loved the pineapple jello for desert. This is the first place my boyfriend took me (a fact he likes to deny, as we came here mid-week and he paid, before our first official date that Friday). A year and a half later and we still come here at least once a month. Pretty standard Mongolian BBQ, but they always keep the counters wiped down and clean, which is great because it can get a little messy with the sauces. Word to the wise - if you're putting the massive spinach leafs on top, put in your sauces first then do the spinach, otherwise it will all run off. Oh boy! It's been years now since my husband and I were looking for a good Mongolian BBQ here in LA. We've tried almost every Mongolian BBQ we see in different malls and nothing compares to Mongol King!!!! The BEST Mongolian BBQ!!! It's super delicious! You get to choose the kind of sauce you want and the most important thing is the cooks don't dilute your food with water while cooking them so the taste you wanted stays with your food unlike in the malls. Plus they have a delicious soup, too and my toddler loved it. This is the first time we've been to Mongol King. We arrived at 830pm and the staff courteously told us that the cooks stop cooking at 9:15pm. He even reminded us that we can still get some for our last order at 9:12. Found it in Yelp! and decided to try it. We LOVED it! We will definitely come back to Mongol King. Oh! This is a great place to fill up on yummy food! The service was efficient and you can't beat all you can eat! I found the perfect sauce combo: one dragon, one garlic, 1/2 ginger, 1/2 Mongol, 1/2 Spicy. Add some beef, pork, lamb, veggies, and noodles, and you've got a feast! My ex turned me on to this place...which is probably why I gained so much weight. If you eat a lot, like Asian-american food, and are starving, this is the place to go. Mongolian BBQ is kind of like a make your own "Chinese" dish and have someone cook it on a grill with a huge sword. The Mongol King is at it's best. They have a lot of meat options (turkey, chicken, lamb, beef, pork) and a lot of vegetable options. The thing I like about this place is that they give you instructions on how much of each sauce you should put in your bowl...which is VERY helpful. I usually like to add another spoonful of the ginger and the garlic, which is amazing. If you've never had Mongolian BBQ, it is definitely worth trying. And if you are in the South Bay, I think the Mongol King would be your best choice. Now remember, if you don't like your dish the first time, assume you did it wrong, and try again. One of the best! I used to come here as a kid 10 years ago but I still love Mongol King to this day. I've been to a few other Mongolian places around South Bay and nothing beats the food here. For a restaurant it's pretty small and lacks some of the condiments you can normally pile onto your bowl, but my plate always comes out delicious. The meat (beef, turkey, chicken, and lamb I think) tastes great and goes perfect with the noodles and their standard sauce. I usually get all-you-can-eat for a dollar more, but normally I can't make it through more than 2 plates. The service is alright, but I always leave full and happy without spending more than 15 dollars. Usually not a lot of people come here either so it's a well-kept secret. If you go later during the lunch hour, they will usually be little to no meat, you have to ask someone to restock the meat area. First of all, the fact that you don't have to sit in a huge cafeteria at the mall is a huge plus. AND they give you appetizer (I got some bread with sesame seeds on 'em which were really good). Meat selection includes beef, chicken, pork, turkey, and LAMB! Lots of veggies.. and you can customize it all yourself with different types of sauce. Okay, every now and then I get the urge to visit my childhood and enjoy the Mongolian BBQ. We used to go all the time with my Dad, and my brothers and I made it into a competition to see who could eat the most, so I think I have a little street cred here. Because as a kid quality did not matter so much, but today, at 40, it does. There are several good ones, but Mongol King, may not be one of them. The food was mediocre at best. The meat (5 kinds) looked fresh, but the sauces were a little strange and flavorless. Actually, the Hot was not, and I am not sure what Mongo Sauce is, but it has no flavor as well. Although, to tell the truth, perhaps the meat was not so fresh, it was a toss-up. The veggies were likewise flavorless, with onions and mushrooms tasting relatively the same. So in the end, I added mustard just to have an identifiable taste in my mouth. On an good note, at least the cooks, and there was two of them, were fast. However, the cooking instrument, which looked like a dull machete, made little tiny pieces of food too small to eat with chopsticks. I like my Mongolian BBQ a little chunkier. The prices are a little high for children, I mean really, how much can a three year old eat. $7.99, which is only a couple of bucks less than an adult seems a bit steep. This place is decent as far as flavor and is similar to other wok restaurants. It is not as good of quality or as flavorful as the other well known wok restaurant in the South Bay. They do have sides (egg rolls/ salad/etc) and dessert included in the cost which the other wok place does not. What really kills me about this place is that it is "all you can eat" but you can only fill one small bowl at a time with food (a posted rule). I am a female (although not petite) and one bowl of food is not enough to fill my stomach so I know one bowl will not fill a male up. I'm aware the restaurant allows limitless trips to the buffet and I'm sure the rule was made so people don't waste , but I never have a problem finishing my plate and the posted sign really gets under my skin. I also hate the rule because my food and noodles hang out the side of my one bowl and drag on the counter top. I'm sure cooking will kill all the bacteria my noodles have picked up from the counter but it still grosses me out. I would rather have them charge me for leftovers (like other all you can eat restaurants ) than have them limit how much I can take each time at the buffet.
