This day, we weren't at the Monasterio del Corpus Christi for church. I'm going to share a not-so-secret secret. We were there for the cookies.
Madres Jeronimas, the cloistered nuns of the church (which means nuns committed to not seeing outsiders) are here, and they bake! The monastery was in the old part of Madrid, so not hard to get to, but down a small alley. We found the back door, equipped with a camera and a two-buttoned buzzer. The top button gets you a confession. The bottom gets you sweets. We buzzed the doorbell, said "Dulces" and were admitted. Following the instructions through a small interior courtyard, we arrived at an old, wooden turntable in the wall. There was a small sign to the right that read what cookies the nuns were making, and for how much. The sister behind the wall whispered to me, and I quickly chose a 1/2 kilo of the Nevaditos for 9 €. These cookies were a-ma-zing! Like a Mexican wedding cookie, but better!
Upon leaving, we egressed into a plaza, where we encountered two German students who wanted to chat and do a cookie exchange!
This was such a fun "hidden" thing to do. It was for a good cause (church charities), and got us to meet some new people. I may need the first buzzer after all the cookies I ate! When in Madrid, do this! read more
