If this place wasn't within walking distance from my workplace, I don't think I would have ever gone. It's right on Kalihi Street, just a short block makai of Dillingham Boulevard. Parking is a problem; you have to be lucky to find a spot on the street. That's the biggest reason I haven't been here until I started working a few doors down. If you're lucky enough to find a spot, I definitely recommend this place. We have a general meeting at least once a year, and the company buys lunch. My first time here, I had the Ahi Katsu and it was great! Not just the main dish, but the original salad dressing is refreshing. Honey mustard vinegartte? I'm stuck in the office today and I didn't want to drive or walk too far so I decided to go to our neighbor. I wanted to get the hamburger steak but they were already out. I went down the menu and got the Roast Pork instead. (I know...NEITHER of um is seafood!) Tender roast pork smothered in brown gravy, white rice and a choice of tossed, Mac potato or Nalo Greens salad. I went here the other day. The service is pretty quick and the workers are really nice. I got the ahi stuffed with crab and some spicy ahi. The poke was really good. The fish was fresh and very flavorful. I liked that they added raw onions for some crunch. The ahi was pretty good. The taste was on point, but I was a little hungry after. I really enjoy the food here...once you get in the door and order the food is prepared pretty quickly. The quality is awesome and the fish is really fresh. Sometimes in the poke get little too much onion but I guess just might be the scoop you get. Sometimes when you call they don't answer the phone, they are always busy that can be an issue if you on a time crunch. Needed to run some errands and wanted to get some lunch too, since I was nearby I went and did the sneak a parking spot at the bank across the street and walked across the street to Monarch. So many good choices I liked the Furikaki Salmon the last time I tried it and the Ahi Katsu but this time I got the Nori wrapped Crabmeat Stuffed Ahi. As usual they never let me down it was down right awesome good flavors of the Wasabi sauce drizzled over the stuffed Ahi and the fresh greens was great too. The Stuffed Ahi was Crispy on the outside with tender crab-meat stuffing wrapped in Ahi which was cooked just right, like upscale dining in a Styrofoam plate. The interior of the place is like a small poke shop no seating with a display of various Poke and side dishes. Service was quick and friendly. Parking of course is a problem some people park in the driveway where maybe two cars can fit or Ninja style and sneak a space at the nearby bank. I haven't come here for a while and remembered the food being really good, so I suggested to my coworkers that we come here for lunch. We decided to make a phone order and since we were ordering 7 plates, we planned to call it in ahead of time. We called the order in at around 10am with the expectation that our food would be ready at around 10:45am (told by the worker). Since we had a lot of orders we did our best to write everything down, so when we called it in, it would be placed to the worker as easily as possible. (e.g. 2 Ahi stuffed crab plates. 1 order with white rice and toss salad, and 1 order with all toss salad)... I arrived to pick up the food at around 11am and to my surprise our order was still not ready. I overheard the workers talking and it sounded like they forgot to make a few of our plates. It was not until 11:30ish that everything was ready for me take. During that time, nobody acknowledged the time I waited, nor did I receive an apology for having to wait so long. To my disappointment 4 of the 7 plates were not made incorrectly when it came to the sides; probably my fault for not checking the plates before I left, but because our lunch time is limited I was rushing to get back to work. It seems like some of the plates were made right away, but because I needed to wait for the other plates, the toss salad appeared to have gotten cooked? Maybe the steam cooked it because the plates were sitting for a while since they made it?? Overall the food itself is good, but I was very disappointed with the quality of customer service, the wait time, and the incorrect plates we received. Monarch Seafood is making Mama Doty's A* List for food. Food: everything that we ordered was Absolutely Delicious! The exciting things is that there are still many other dishes we haven't tried. The seafood dishes (ahi belly, ahi katsu, crabcake, grilled ahi and deep fried poke) were so fresh. The mochiko chicken was out of this world Ono! But the salad dressing and dip sauces were Mind Blowing! I got me their salad dressing (24 oz./$7.95) which is a Must! And you can use the salad dressing as a dipping sauce. We were tore between the onolicious potato-mac salad, like my mom would make and the Nalo green salad because of that addictive salad dressing. Alas, I had to just get both! Service: it was a last minute decision to get lunch for work and a 4 plate order, quickly turned into our whole department wanting food. I chanced calling at 915am and was greeted with a friendly, "hello, may I help you." Landen quickly took our huge order of 22 plates, 5 salads and 4 bentos, plus sides. I've been coming to Monarch Seafoods off and on for a few years now. Located on Kalihi Street near Dillingham they have very limited hours. In general they are just an average seafood market with an extremely limited selection of poke/fish. They also have a menu though, with a number of plate lunch options. The only option that people really come here for is the nori wrapped crab stuffed ahi. It's by far their most popular item and the only thing that keeps me coming back here. This dish is exactly what it sounds like. A generous portion of both crab and ahi in a nori wrap fried with breading. On top is a light drizzle of some sort of aioli. It is very good and quite satisfying. I'm not sure if it's just my imagination but the amount they give you now feels like it's smaller than it was in previous years. I know of a few other places that offer a similar dish, including Fresh Catch in kaimuki. I think that Monarch's version is better than the competition. Overall, Monarch has an interesting and semi-unique dish which is quite tasty and I can definitely say that "I'm a fan." read more

Oh, and they run out of stuff if you go too late. **Spicy Ahi Poke - simple, mildly spicy, green onion and mild white onions. The lady seems to make small batches throughout the day, and when it's THAT fresh it's all I need. Well that and a scoop of rice, of course. **Stuffed Ahi Plate - lightly breaded nori wrapped around a log of ahi stuffed with minced crab salad (like a deep fried makizushi roll with a slab of ahi rolled into a tube instead of rice). The amount of ahi seems to vary, as does the cooking (occasionally a comes out a little overcooked / dry), but the moist stuffing is a perfect match. MY SECRET- a dab of their sweet salad dressing on the deep fried roll totally sets it off. **Ahi Katsu - Not like they used to make it, but still okay. Used to be one big log with a wasabi dressing, but now they give two smaller rolls with wasabi drizzle and some shoyu sauce. Great gem in the heart of industrial Kalihi! They've got a selection of house made poke in addition to their plate lunch options. Plate lunch prices are in the mid-range about $12-14 depending what you get. The imitation crab stuffed Ahi was unique. It was crunchy, it was savory it didn't taste oily at all! And their Monarch Bento did not disappoint on portions. The mochiko chicken was moist & big chunks of meat. The crab cake was delightful as well. Wonder if they make it in a bigger size? Only downside- parking is street only. And they don't make their Banana Cream Pie dessert anymore (really wanted to try that but the guys working at the counter said "whats that?"). Since I don't live in Kalihi anymore, whenever we are in the area I try to get a plate. They also provide a selection of poke and other dishes but I've only tried the nori wrapped crabmeat stuffed ahi. I've been going there for about 8 years now and that dish never disappoints. Writing this review is making me want to go there tomorrow and try some of their other selections. I took off a star because they don't have a parking lot to themselves. There's a bank of hawaii in front and I sometimes park there if I can't find street parking. I don't condone doing that but this place is just so good. You just order and leave since there's no dining area so I usually call ahead and that way I don't have to wait too long to get my food. Normally a 5 star plate lunch place; but on this visit, one plate was great (crab stuffed ahi roll); and the other (roast pork) was not so good this time. The roast pork was super salty; was not able to finish it, had to dump it. I did call them after to report it; so hopefully the next time it will be better.
