The Modern Body Art tattoo artists create amazing tattoos. I had quite a big tattoo done by Andy Cryztalz. It's dotwork and took a total of about 17 hours. It was completed over the course of 5 sessions. They are open 10a-6pm Mon-Sat. For larger pieces, they usually book 4 hour sessions either 10-2p or 2p-6p. Tattoo rate is £70 per hour. Chris, the receptionist, is friendly and professional. I had my sessions on Wednesdays and found the studio very relaxed and mellow. The co-owner and artist, Jo, was usually working as well as Rachel. They were both very friendly. All of the artists were very nice and approachable. I felt like I could ask them questions without feeling intimated or "not cool enough." Andy is brilliant and his work speaks for itself. He does dotwork and a lot of sacred geometric patterns which was exactly what I was looking for. He custom-designed my tattoo and created something beyond anything I could've imagined. Plus, he has a positive vibe and is easy to talk to. I will definitely book with him again when I've saved up enough money. The only downside is the location (well, if you have to drive to get there) as parking is difficult and expensive. The street parking nearby is only for up to 2 hours, so you're better off taking public transport or parking in a car park. All in all, this place is fab and I highly recommend checking it out. Free consultation and appointments usually book out at least a month after consultation depending on the artist. The artists working in this shop are talented, but there are other artist capable of equally good work not a million miles away from modern body art. They charge a lot because the reputation of the studio is excellent, but Jo Harrison built that reputation and they are working off the back of her success. They have the bad attitude and huge ego that a lot of tattoo artist have these days, they treat the client as though the client is lucky to be tattooed by them, rather than being happy the client is choosing them, and so don't treat their clients with much respect. I was going to get a tattoo done here, I designed this myself, it is large, and simple and not hard to replicate for an artist of their skill. However I was told they would not tattoo my design, but would redesign it 'based' on my original artwork, but in the style of one of there artists. As I said this was a very simple design, but very meaningful, to change any element would have devoided the meaning, and I had already had a pro. tattooer with 30 years experience confirm it would work well as a tattoo, but these highly skilled artists (and they are highly skilled) apparently could not pull off this simple piece of art, why? I don't know, but I do know that my art is good, it sells, I have many other of my own designs tattooed very well so I left the shop. As it happens, a very talented artist with a lot of experience and a wonderful way with his clients was happy to replicate and tattoo my design for me, so it was possible afterall, who would have thought? read more

I got tattooed at Modern Body Art before Christmas, and they made me feel very welcome. It has a calm vibe, which is what you want when you are going to lie for 3 hours with someone shoving needles into your ribs. A tattoo (in my opinion - but each to her own) isn't really something you just go out and get - like buying a coffee. But if that is what you are after - just go somewhere they aren't trained, are not reputable, take no pride in what they do and get anything you want etched onto you. But you will most certainly get what you pay for quite probably a blurred, badly coloured bit of wank, which in 6 months time will look like a weirdly shaped bruise. MBA tattoo day in, day out, and are the experts (ffs - in what world is it acceptable to be annoyed that a tattoo studio are trying to be professional taking pleasure in being an artist isn't being jumped up it is taking pride in what you do and the way you do it). You get what you pay for, and if you are going to have something permanently added to your body, why on earth would you go somewhere cheep where they don't have the relevant experience and have gone through the necessary apprenticeships?!? So to summarise (my rambling monologue!) - MBA - are great people, great artists, and the place to go in Brum for tattoos. read more

I had a few laser sessions at MBA to remove unwanted ink, the price was fair, especially the 3 for 2 offer. unfortunately I had to stop before completion due to health issues NOT in any way related to the laser treatments, but now I'm fully recovered I intend to get back in touch with MBA to continue removing my unwanted ink so that I can get the tattoos I really want. The staff who dealt with me (cant remember their names) were very helpful and extremely patient with me during my laser treatment, I found it to be very painful as it was in a sensitive area but on the recommendation of my laser tech on subsequent visits I applied a numbing cream before each session which really helped. Really looking forward to continuing with laser tattoo removal at MBA I rate the service as 5 stars and will hopefully get the rest of the laser work completed soon and get one of their talented artists to complete my cover up. The quality of tattos here is good, very good in fact. But the price is expensive, as they charge by the hour and it is 70 pounds an hour. A small tattoo on my wrist cost me £140, it took around an hour and 15 minutes but I was charged for 2 hours. There are cheaper places that tattoo just as well if not better, although the artists here are very good and I am pleased with the tattoo I got, but for the price I feel, and everyone else who has seen it feels that I have been ripped off. I do feel that the tattoo was lovely and although I wouldn't go back again I am more than pleased with the end result. I know that this studio is in the city centre and this may be the reason for the prices but I would rather travel out to some of the excellent studios outside of the city center. read more

I've had nothing but good experience with Modern Body Art. the staff aren't "jumped up know it alls," they just know what they are talking about when it comes to tattooing. They have been a great help with working out what would work and what wouldn't work as a tattoo. I'd much rather this kind of advice than to walk into the shop, uneducated and have the tattooist just put anything on my body without advising first (which has happened to me) . Some people moan about the waiting time, but what's a couple of weeks when you're going to have something on you forever? If you're serious about getting some quality work done, then I couldn't reccomend a better studio for miles. read more

The shop is full of jumped up no it alls, what happened to the days of walking in a shop and getting a tattoo, they seem to think you need a degree or something to be a tattooist, like its some sort of practice that only they are capable of, but the thing is theres a lot more tattoo shops better than this, and a lot better artists......so fuck modern body art, theres nothing modern about tattoos its been happening for hundreds off years. The modern part is the attitude your met with, what a bunch of wankers is what i thought walking out the door... i would advise people to stay away, unless your wondering where all the bullied kids from school ended up!!! read more

The place is clean and hygienic,staff helpful and friendly.There are quite a few artists to choose from,all having different styles of working,so you should find one to suit a design you may have in mind.The artist I decided to do a design for me was Jo,and I couldnt be more pleased with the work she has done.The design is fantastic....so good,it put my other tattoos to shame.I am now in the process of having old tattoos covered over,as they really looked that bad compared to it.All examples of the artists work are online,so take a look! I just got my first tattoo here earlier this afternoon. I can not praise the artist (Deni I thihnk?!) enough. I was advised to go bigger like others have complained about but it was left up to me and in the end I love what I have. I was made to feel very comfortable and felt well looked after. I freaked out at first and they dealt with it perfectly and made me feel a lot calmer and at ease. I would recommend this place to anyone. An excellent tattoo studio, clean, friendly and with multi award winning, amazing artists. I first had a tattoo here 12 years ago when they first opened and my last one in September 2010 and wouldn't hesitate in returning. I'm not sure about the other review, but I'd rather have know it all rather than know nothing staff advising me! I loved going here for my tattoo it was my first one and they were so helpful. I knew the design I wanted but not how long it would take or anything else so their level of knowledge was really important to me. Rachel was really nice even if i was a right squirmy pain in the arse and im preety sure I had a free ten mins but shhhs dont tell her. This is the 3rd studio I have been to and would recommend them to anyone. Yes there are expensive but can you really put a price on quality art you will have till the day you die? The staff are friendly & knowledgeable. From the moment you walk in you feel at ease. I have had 2 tatts done there both big pieces and I am booked in my third by the same artist. MBA is probably one of the BEST studios I've been tattooed at. Super friendly, super clean, super cool! All of the artists there are extremely talented and make you feel very welcome and relaxed.
