We came to Weimar today for the purpose of visiting Buchenwald and it was quite worthwhile. The…read moremuseum was superb; it has three floors and very detailed information by each of the (myriad) photos. The third floor in particular was very emotional, since it exhibits large photos taken by allied photographers and the impact is incredibly powerful. There's also an art museum which has a rather large collection of prisoners' art - in addition to some sculptures done later - and that was also powerful. The place where I broke down was the crematorium; enough said....a documentary film is shown about once/hour in a large auditorium behind the Visitors' Center. The bookstore (inside the Visitors' Center) has an extensive selection of books (primarily in German), many of which are filled with photos. The café has a lousy selection and therefore we didn't bother eating there.
To reach Buchenwald from the Hbf (main train station), take the #6 bus - and be sure you take the one marked Buchenwald and *not* Ettersburg. On M-F, there are two buses/hour going to Buchenwald from the Hbf (at 18 & 48 minutes after the hour) and there's only one bus/hour leaving Buchenwald which goes to the Hbf (at 25 minutes after the hour) - and the last bus departs Buchenwald at 6:25 p.m. The cost is 1.90 euros, and you may buy tickets on the bus with a 2-euro coin.
(See my separate review for the Buchenwald Glockenturm [Clock Tower]).
