I knew I would be spending yet another long and frustrating day at Heathrow airport waiting out Sno-mageddon 2010, so rather than watch as the TV reporters continued to talk about the hell I was simultaneously experiencing, I figured I might as well accomplish a bit of work, which requires the internets. Here's how it went this time: Laura: Hi. I (gulp) need to top up my dongle. Store Man: No problem, that's easy! (Begins transaction) But have you seen our new Pay & Go Mi-Fi? It's actually cheaper than a dongle and up to 5 devices can connect at a time, so if you're traveling or meeting with co-workers you can... Laura: (temporarily stunned by great service and helpful advice momentarily zoned out...) Store Man: ...But I'm happy to just top up your dongle... instead... ? Laura: Um, you have been so helpful. Store Man: Thank you? Laura: I'll take it. You take AMEX, right? Store man: Oh, I am so sorry, we stopped taking AMEX just over a month ago. But, (he whispers), I'll give it a try - I think it will still work. It worked. And the Mi-Fi? It's working beautifully at LHR as I'm waiting out Sno-mageddon 2010. Bobe Communications is around the corner from my house and is owned by two Somali brothers. It is…read morean internet cafe, but they send faxes and have phone booths for international calls. I send a lot of faxes to the US and have become a regular. I am always welcomed with a warm smile. Both brothers are very friendly and professional. When I walk into the shop, there are always people using the internet. I have yet to walk into the shop and find it empty. The shop has about 20 computers, all fully equipped with a headset and webcam. The prices are good and if you need a monthly account the prices are even better. I have used their internet when mine is down and find it to be speedy. You can tell the brothers take pride in their internet shop because it is kept clean and the equipment in excellent condition.
