Our family has been going to this service center for many, many years, and we've consistently had positive experiences. The new manager, Chance, along with the team of auto mechanic technicians, have been incredibly helpful, reasonable, and professional. From jump-starting a dead battery and installing a new one quickly, to completing much-needed last-minute repairs on our son's truck before he returned to college, and most recently, thoroughly investigating an emergency notification light on one of our vehicles -- they've gone above and beyond every time. Finding trustworthy and qualified mechanics is not easy, and knowing we can rely on the Mobile Trumbull Service Center right here in our town is both comforting and greatly appreciated. We are truly grateful for their continued dedication and excellent service.

Mechanic friends have said his prices are fair for the work he's done. Recently I developed a parasitic leak in my electrical system and was pretty sure where the problem was: the controls for the windows in the driver's side door panel. Gene told me it would take anywhere from two to eight hours labor costs to identify where the problem was, and that's before spending whatever it would cost to do the fix. By then I had been tipping up on that point where I didn't want to put any more money into this car and was thinking of getting rid of it, so I told Gene to look at the window controls first, and if the problem wasn't there we'd talk about whether to proceed. I also emphasized that I couldn't afford to be without the car for a long time. (In the past I had dropped it off and it would take quite a while for him to get to it so I underscored that wouldn't work for me this time because I had a trip coming up.) I asked when should I bring it in at a time he could actually work on it. He told me what day to drop it off...a Thursday morning...so I left it the evening before. On Saturday I called to see where things stood. He hadn't done anything on it yet. I waited until midweek the following week and called again. He still hadn't touched it. He had several excuses: he was out sick one day and the other mechanic was out sick another day; he'd been backed up and was thinking about hiring another mechanic and just running the place instead of working on cars himself...etc. etc. He also told me he had checked the battery and determined the problem wasn't there. I already knew that because It was a fairly new battery. I called again that weekend figuring surely by then he would have looked at it. (It had been nine work days since I first dropped the car off.) Nope, he hadn't touched it yet. He told me parasitic leaks are tough to deal with and it would take him a lot of time, and he had lots of cars backed up he was working on, and he couldn't afford to spend all the time it would take on my car. (This shouldn't have been an issue, since we had agreed he was going to look in a specific place, the window controls, and then talk to me before doing anything else.) I told him his idea of dropping the car off at a time he could actually do the work and my idea of it were two different things. He said "Fine, come get your car out of my yard, you won't owe me anything!" I was pretty stunned. First, he hadn't done anything on the car so how could I owe him anything for work he hadn't done? Even worse was his attitude which essentially was "Don't you dare question me. I don't care what I promised, I don't need your business." Not the way anyone should treat a customer. If that's what you want in a mechanic, go for it. I prefer someone who lives up to their commitments. If he had said at the outset he wouldn't be able to look at the car for several weeks, that would have been a bummer but I could have lived with it. that wasn't the case here. I brought the car in when he told me to bring it in. And then he got upset when I didn't meekly accept that he wasn't doing what he had said he would do.

During a recent trip from Cape Cod to New York city, my Subaru broke down in Guilford where it…read moreremained with a local mechanic for three days before it was "repaired" - only to break down again not an hour after I drove off from the repair facility. Now in Shelton and with the "check engine" light flashing, I pulled over and a google search on my phone showed the Huntington Center Gulf was less than a mile ahead. I chanced the short drive and coasted up to their service bay doors where I was met by Donald, who I took for the head mechanic. While the station seemed somewhat busy, Donald directed his attention to me and my vehicle. He took a short history and then asked to see both the Guilford repair invoice and one or two previous work orders. Over the next fifteen minutes, he and his assistant began diagnostics on my engine. In short order, they opened my radiator and began to check for the pressure drop/differential which would confirm a far more serious engine problem than that identified - and "repaired" - by both the Guilford repair facility - and before them, a Subaru dealer back on Cape Cod (Buzzard's Bay). I was now looking at a $ 3,500. head gasket repair!! This was on top of the $ 1,500. I spent in Guilford & Buzzard's Bay replacing thermostats!! Donald then helped me find a nearby hotel to which he would himself dri've me. He explained that he was backlogged with work - little wonder - and couldn't possibly get to my Subaru for a couple of weeks. As good a mechanic as Donald is, he was also a good samaritan. "Call me in the morning after you get some rest .." he said before pulling away from the hotel. I decided to have my car towed the next morning to our long-standing mechanic in Norwalk and when I called Donald at Huntington Gulf the next morning to let him know and to settle my bill, he advised that there was no charge for his diagnosis and to give his name to the tow operator as a point-of-contact. Car's break down, life happens. I'm convinced that had I broken down somewhere other than near the Huntington Gulf in Shelton, a lesser mechanic might well have ordered additional, and purposeless, replacement of the thermostat, hoses etc. and this saga might have continued. Instead, I now know of two great mechanics: Donald at the Huntington Gulf in Shelton (and so too, Angelo at Angelo's Foreign Car Service in Norwalk). PS: Three weeks after the above event, I took the bus, Amtrak and Ubers from the Cape to Angelo's in Norwalk from where I retrieved my now repaired Subaru, complete with "a new engine". . Angelo also effected repairs which the Subaru dealership back on the Cape had overlooked. The takeaway from this nightmare: 1. We bought a 2012 Subaru Outback only after our due diligence indicated that Subaru had, by 2010, resolved the head gasket problems which were plaguing their vehicles. I no longer believe that's true and called the company to report this experience. 2. You can't get through life without a good doctor ... and mechanic!! so take pains to seek out such people; they're invaluable.
