I'm pretty territorial when it comes to getting a haircut, not because I'm fussy about my hair given that it's nowhere near as Hasselhoff-esque as I would wish it was, but because I like the consistency of the same good quality cut. That's why I like Grafters Barbers. Since I moved to Dundalk this has been my go-to place - I'm always super-satisfied with my barber D, and I have never ever had to wait to get seated more than a few seconds thanks to the fact that this shop is open 7 days a week including Sundays! Awesome down-to-Earth barbers, always super clean and comfortable studio, very affordable and located right in the heart of the town. It's actually even literally opposite the Panama Cafe as well, which can come in handy during the winter months. Really do recommend Grafters Barbers - always a pleasant + super-quick visit!

The salon is clearly busy as I had to come back once I'd booked. The staff are all well presented and very friendly and polite. I didn't catch my technicians name but she was engaging and warm, which was a treat after so many salons where the language barrier gets in the way. The attention to detail was impressive as was the fact that no electrical buffers are used - she was horrified when I mentioned this! If I lived here I'd definitely use this place again. A fine job..

This particular man, who is still working there now aged over 80, followed on from his father before him, who was doing the same job going back to World War II? I thought I would note this barbers shop. It's a throwback from a different time; still family owned, and a small independent place that has rarely ever closed its doors. It probably closed its doors longer as a result of bombings than for any other reason. Mr Gorman has been running his barbers shop on this site for all my life. It has changed little inside but the cut throat razors, honing and stropping, leather straps and extensive use of Brylcreem (invented 100 years ago) are mostly all lost to progress. There was a time that he had very little competition and was ever busy but now we are spoiled for choice with hairdressers, beauty parlours, tanning salons, nail bars and on and on. He's known me since I was a baby, he knew my entire family circle too. He's even had the opportunity to cut my hair many times but never brylcreem. What I find remarkable as well as the sheer longevity and sense of service here is that he still follows an old Newry tradition among shop owners, certainly from the 1950's, which was half - day afternoon closing on Wednesdays so he opens 5 1/2 days every week. I would be hard-pushed to think of any other local independent still doing this today. We are undoubtedly watching the ending of an era in the next 10 years.
