The bags are expensive, but they're meant to last forever. I have "The Rummy," the medium size messenger bag. I needed a messenger bag that could fit tightly to my petite body so it wouldn't shift while biking, a problem that I've had with other bags. The bag has so many easy-to-adjust buckles and straps that I always get the perfect fit, regardless of the size of my load. In addition, I like that I can flip the straps to my other shoulder. The bags have no padding so they're fairly light when empty. However, if I'm carrying something with edges (ex. a box), it will poke into my back. Since it's the Bay Area, I'm almost always carrying an extra sweater or hoodie so I position it in the bag to pad my back. The black messenger bags are sleek, but you can get fun colored buckles to brighten them up. My only issue is that the Rummy is a bit too big for me and my purposes. I probably should've purchased the Monty (the small messenger bag), but the Rummy was a mere $20 more so I splurged. read more

When I walked in I was a little skeptical at first, given there aren't too many different designs, but that is only because every one is an A+ and you don't need more options. Really positive experience! They went out of their way to find what I needed. A couple of years ago, I started wearing clip-in shoes on my bike, but I can rarely find the sneaker style ones in my size (I am a small lady). They had a few options for me to choose from, and when the ones that I wanted weren't there, they ordered them for me and emailed me when they'd arrived. They even had the shimano clips. Super nice. I heard about Mission Workshop on a website or blog or something, and ventured in their store one day quite a while ago. There was no sign on the door, and no indication that anyone was even there, but when I opened the door to their warehouse, I was greeted by a bunch of guys working on remodeling the place. The store was nowhere near stocked like it is now, but it didn't stop them from inviting me in and delivering great customer service. One of the founders of the company came down and talked to me about some of the bags, let me try them on, and did a great job explaining the details of the construction, where they're made, the history of the company, and their plans for the store. He even invited me back for the grand opening. This was before they released the messenger bag line, and they only had the Rambler and Vandal backpacks, so I walked out with a silver Rambler pack, which is perfect for biking, commuting, running errands, etc. It even works great as luggage and has made trips all over the country with me. The bags are nice enough and sleek enough that I don't feel like a wannabe-hipster when riding around with one on my back (like some messenger bags), and it doesn't look out of place with my 10 speed (yes, I prefer gears). It's good to see a bag maker who genuinely cares about how a bag functions and not solely about hipster image. The prices are moderate but you get what you pay for and the company is legit. Plus you money is supporting American jobs and supporting creative, talented individuals. read more

This review isn't for the store but for their products and specifically their customer service. I am the proud owner of two MW bags--the Vandal and the Fitzroy. After a few years of heavy use, my Fitzroy, while still quite functional, was looking pretty beat up. Some stitching came loose, one of the clips broke, the bicycle light loop on the bottom came undone, fabric was wearing unevenly in particular areas, etc. I emailed them asking to see if they could fix it for me. Instead, I received an email back in 5 minutes offering to give me a new one. I was blown away. It was at this point though their customer service kicked into high gear. I politely asked if I could actually upgrade my bag to the VX so long as I paid the difference (considering how I use my bag, the higher quality fabric would probably be a worthwhile investment). They happily agreed, however they were out of stock and said they'd make me one if I could wait a few weeks. Ever the inpatient type, a few weeks was too long for a new bag, so instead I asked if I could actually just get a completely different bag for the same value as my worn bag--the Sanction VX. They agreed and not only sent me the bag, but also let me keep my old Fitzroy and even sent me a replacement clip for it! read more

This review is mainly regarding their level of customer service. These folks are great. Super helpful, patient, cooperative. They go out of their way to make your experience top-notch. Yes their stuff is pricey but it's also undeniably well-built and they do have some pretty incredible warranties. You should definitely come check them out. I purchased the AP Series messenger bag size medium from Mission Workshop about three months ago. I use it for commuting between work and home everyday and have recently started taking it on mountain bike rides after work. So far the bag has held up wonderfully and is quite comfortable. Spending the extra money for the advanced series was a impulse buy at the store but I have not regretted it. I really liked the color and VX material used in the advanced product line while the Arkiv closure system is unique and cool to use, it is not entirely necessary. The people at Mission Workshop are also rad so if you have the chance to go into the store in person I highly recommend it. read more

I was recently searching for a new bag to handle my bike commute during the inevitable rainy season coming up (hard to believe in this heat). I did some research and found this company.. right here in SF, in the Mission, and the product looked great. They are tucked away but I love the fact that they have re-used a warehouse space, its the perfect look for a place selling bicycle gear. I talked with Evan (I think I got your name right) and he was very knowledgeable about their product and I could tell that they have put a lot of time into coming up with the design of their packs. The construction of each piece looks top notch and designed to stand weather and abuse and still look good through it all. Bottom line, I was sold after seeing their stuff in person and I have been using the Vandal and it is fantastic. One reviewer wrote that it feels better on than off and I agree. I actually look forward to my commute now even more than before... I get to save money on gas, not add to the environmental pollution and I get a cool backpack that I think can be used not only for the bike but for many other things too, camping, hiking, etc. Another guy, Ray, helped me out when I came back to get a waist belt for the pack and was very helpful as well. So, if you need a pack and want to support a local company that's making their stuff right here in the US and A, then I think you won't be disappointed (how can u with a lifetime guarantee?) Let me preface this by saying that I've been a long time admirer of Mission Workshop's aesthetically-pleasing and utilitarian products, I was really excited to finally order a bag (rambler camo) after months of mulling the decision over. Imagine my disappointment when my new bag came with velcro sewed in that was misaligned for the rolltop, so that even though it would roll closed, the top and bottom sections would not make full contact. It does not prevent the bag from functioning as a rolltop, however I do not have the confidence to use it as such under high load simply because the velcro patches aren't making full contact. I am disappointed that Mission Workshop would send customers such an obviously flawed product and will be looking elsewhere for goods in the future. read more

I bought my Mission Workshop Vandal backpack about 2 years ago and have used it every day since then. This bag is hands down the most comfortable and versatile bag I have ever owned. I have used it for commuting to and from work, school, and camping/hiking trips. Unfortunately one of the outside zippers fell off of the track so I called them up and brought it in for them to have a look. Once they saw what happened (which doesn't happen often) they replaced my bag with a new one no questions asked. At first it sounded like a lot of money to spend on a bag but looking back I am thankful that I invested in such a genuine company with great customer service. Highly recommended! read more

About a week or so ago I dropped in to check-out their Sanction backpack. I researched it beforehand but wanted to see it in person before dropping the cash. It looked good and I pulled it off the rack and continued to browse the store. One of the two sales assistants offered me a free coffee. Nice! I dropped in during their sample sale weekend and started looking through their sales rack. They didn't have any prices listed - just a sign saying the percent off. I spent some time looking through the rack. The one sales guy seemed busy managing the coffee station, but the other was just wandering aimlessly around. I saw some things that looked interesting and since no one was helping me out I walked over to the assistant who didn't seem to be doing much to ask him about the prices. Rather than walk over to help me out he responded with the general range at which the items were priced. And then just stood there. Huh? So, I don't get the final price until after I pay? Is it one of those things where if you have to ask the price you can't afford it? I told him that I'd grab the things I was interested in and bring it over to him. I walk back, pull off the three items I was looking at, and brought it over. But at this point he had turned his attention to someone else. It was like he couldn't be bothered with the sales rack. I left everything on the table (including the full priced Sanction pack) and walked out. read more
