I have been a member for probably 25 years or more. I joined at the Poway branch. While the people have consistently been nice, the service has declined. This review is more about the telephone customer service. There was a time when it was easy to reach customer service by phone. No more. Today, I called at noon. I opted for a call back. Now it is 2 pm and still no call back. Two hours without a call back? That's unacceptable. Another issue that only happens to MFCU and not my two other credit unions and credit card company is their interface with Quicken. For years I've had problems and get no answers or resolution. I've decided to close my accounts but even that is not made easy by MFCU. I now live out of state and in order to close my accounts I have to send a notarized letter and my driver's license photo by mail. Maybe this is SOP in the industry but for me it is part and parcel of doing business with MFCU. Hopefully soon, I will not have to deal with this credit union any longer. read more

MFCU as a whole has gone downhill over the years. They used to care about their members, now you are just a number and it feels like a big bank. Zero customer service, no communication. Just letters in the mail that come a week later after they make changes to your account. No calls, no trying to make it right, empty apologies. No longer a good credit union. read more

Ready to close my account, but keeping it just for the savings rate. This credit union has really gone downhill. I have been a member since 1991 continuously, but something has changed. All of a sudden my account has transfer limits that the rules change every time I go to make a transfer to an external account. I was lied to and told ALL accounts have a $2500 limit. Then the story changed to that is the default amount. Then they raised it to a $5,000 limit, but then that became my weekly limit. Then they cleared me to transfer another $5,000, but then bounced it because now there is a weekly limit, and now it is a monthly limit and even with a new month, now it is a rolling 30 day limit. Then they raise it $1,000 when I am on my way to close the account and then I have to deal with a snooty teller with the phony condescending smile. This institution is now not even my secondary bank. I'm just keeping a little savings for the special rate, but I have moved all of the rest of my money out and now it is just a matter of time. They aren't competitive, NASA FCU killed them on CDs. They've never actually been there when I needed them, I am always bombarded with offers when I don't have a need and the one time I thought I would borrow money from them 15 years ago on their preapproved car offer, they said my car had high miles, even with absolutely perfect credit and title in hand. So what do I need this aggravation for when N Island Credit Union seems so eager and they actually have helped me out in the past with better yields and even letting me use my MFCU card in their branch. Poway MFCU ~ something has happened to customer support and service at this branch. We are 30-year clients / retired teachers and have done our banking with MFCU since late 1980. I recently refinanced a car loan and somehow the payoff check never made it to the payoff car company. Now it is "MY PROBLEM" and must make an unexpected payment which includes late charges. When I reported the issue, the manager assured me he would communicate with me by the end of the day. He has NEVER called me back or reached out to me in any way until I got fussy. This is not how I want to get my issues resolved...if so, I would be at BofA. The only information I currently have (after being fussy) is "this is a long process and will take time to resolve". He did commit to contacting me with an update in two days. I am not going to hold my breath. So...MFCU Poway is not the friendly, client-oriented, "I know your name" organization that we have trusted for the past 30 years. I feel if you are looking for that, you should "shop around". A tale of two banks... Poway Road MFCU: Their customer markers were easily 10 feet from the teller and they had plexiglass installed...and of course everyone was wearing masks. I tried to approach the teller to give her my account number and she ran away 10 feet from her counter. She instructed me to stay on the marker and asked me to yell my account name and number across the office. I mentioned that I was uncomfortable yelling personal info across the building. The teller was dramatically running from me like I was a diseased leper. If I took a step forward, she ran from the desk backward like I was attacking her. It was embarrassing and annoying and all bad feels...I have hearing loss so having to try to hear from 10-13 feet away through thick plexiglass and two masks, having to yell, not be able to see mouths moving was all unreasonable and made for a frustrating and icky experience. Next day, Santee MFCU: customer markers are a safe few comfortable feet from the teller and plexiglass installed and we all had masks on. I interacted with 3 employees that were welcoming and kind and remembered that we are still customers and bank accounts are still private information. I did not feel like a leper so that was cool. I will drive the extra few miles to go to this branch any day. read more

Electronic Counterfeit Note Report Imagine needing $100 to pay your rent. But only because the bank that you trust gave you a fake $100 dollar bill. Counterfeit alert: when you receive cash from a teller ask for new bills only. I went to this location today 03/06/2021 to withdraw $1300 in large billls. I went straight to Chase bank to pay my rent on time. The teller at Chase notifies me that one of the 100 dollar bills is not real. I tell her that's impossible Mission federal just gave me that bill. Long story short I was robbed of 100 dollars the manager at Mission said there's is nothing we can do. If I didn't have more money i would have to pay a late fee for rent payment I mean honestly don't you guys check each bill beforeI immediately terminated my banking with mission. Went to go open an account today and it was closed. The store hours state open until 5 PM. It was only 4:20 PM. Thirty year member. Made a deposit. I was advised the majority of the funds would not be available until eight days later. Why does MFCU need to hold my money so long? With today's technology, it is not clear why they want to hold my money. Must be beneficial to them to hold that long. The reason I was given is that is their policy. No other explanation is provided. Cathy, your response makes no sense, I did call the manager, Gabriel in Poway. He said it was the MFCU policy and nothing could be done. When I asked to speak to his manager, he said the issue stopped with him. I did send an e-mail to both CEO Debra Schwartz and COO Robert Miller. I have yet to get a response from anyone at MFCU. If my business was really important (By the way, the same message is sent to everyone with a negative review), my concerns would have been addressed rather than dismissed. I went in to update some information and when I showed the person working my paperwork, they asked me an inappropriate question. Following that, their manager saw my paperwork and they both started laughing. Mission fed has always given me issues but today they made me feel like less of a person. Not only that, Jared seemed annoyed and surprised that I wanted to close my account after it all. Every time I come in here I have a negative experience with one of the tellers. Today I went to cash my stimulus check obviously every human being needs. and she would not let me. She said that she couldn't accept my ID because it is expired. I don't know how that changes my identity. but I've been with this bank for over six years. They have a copy of my ID in the computer verify my Social Security card number.She denied me my stimulus check no apologies no recommendation on what I should do just a snotty attitude. So I went to Mission FederalIn Mira Mesa and cash my check no problem no crappy attitude just understanding and they got the job done. The girl I believe her name is Maria and she is blonde I hate when she helps me. Because she doesn't help me she does quite the opposite. My mother was a member for 50+ years. After her passing I closed out her account which had a CD. They told me they were going to waive the early withdrawal fee but when I got the tax statement from them they did charge the fee. So whatever.... I was myself a customer for many years but things like this is why I no longer am. I mean sorry my mom died before the CD matured, it is bad enough to charge the fee but to lie and say that you are not going to and then do is really weak and why I will never patronize or recommend this credit union to anyone. read more

Deborah Johnson is an amazing person , goes above and beyond, gets the job done and provides world class service at the same time. All my banking loans, car loans and all she is the person to go to. Poor customer service at Poway branch teller with bleached blonde hair very condescending and rude. I will be cancelling my account today and withdrawing all my money. First it was the terrible communication about my new debit card, then it was the terrible communication and downright laziness of not letting me know that 2 checks I had deposited did not clear because the checks were made out incorrectly. If I was not diligent and monitoring my checking account I would have never known. Were talking about over 2k$ here, one happened in October the other happened in December. Both times Mission Feds response was, "We sent you a letter in the mail". That seems to be the default answer to any problems, "hey sorry pal, we sent you something in the mail" One would think after multiple times of not receiving the things you are supposedly sending me, you would try another form of communication, like email, or I don't know, pick up the phone and call me, my number is on file, how hard it is to call me? When I suggested this to the branch manager at the Mira Mesa location her response was, "we have over 200 thousand members, calling or emailing is not possible." Well that makes me feel like I am really valued as a customer. Maybe it doesn't matter to Mission Fed, but 2k$ of my hard earned money sure as hell matters to me. Bottom line is stay away from Mission Fed, they have over 200K members anyway so they don't need you. read more

I have just enough money to cover those charges. But they post dated the charges and then began charging me a $29 "courtesy" fee. In one day they charged me the $29 "courtesy" three times! Only after these charges were posted did they post my deposit. After a few incidents like this I wonder why I'm with this credit union. They did finally reverse the charges after two phone call and a online Chat session with a rude customer service person. read more

I was very impressed with the service from this location. I needed some help and solutions with my account and that's exactly what I received. The staff here is very welcoming with a smile. One of the things that most impressed me was how the branch manager provided gave me solutions to a problem that seemed almost unavoidable. Now engaging is the same predatory practices that the big banks have been doing for years. Each month MFCU withholds my deposits in"pending" mode long enough for debits to hit my account in order to justify fees. I get pay checks each month from the same client, one of the biggest corporations in SD county, and each month MFCU does this. I'll have a couple of thousand dollars in "pending" when debits hit my account. MFCU will transfer funds from my savings acct into checking, levy fees against my account and then release the "pending" funds into my account within ours of the fee scenario. This is a disgusting practice that they engage in regularly. If you're looking for a nice, friendly, local credit union to do your banking, look elsewhere. read more

Poor customer service is usually a sign of things falling apart for a business. This is especially concerning when it's your bank. I applied for a line of credit and was approved. I was told on the phone that we simply had to make time to sign our signatures. I told the rep that my wife and I would visit the credit union the following afternoon, after 4 p.m. She said that would work and she would let them know to expect us. When we showed, the teller told us that they had been extremely busy and we were supposed to have an appointment (so now it's my fault). We would have to wait another 45 minutes for an opening -- which puts us at about 5 p.m. The teller offered no other help, like offering to make an appointment, etc. She just kept blaming the telephone rep. I asked her to have a discussion with the telephone folks so they know in the future they need to schedule an appointment. Thinking it might be time to find another bank/credit union. read more

This location is always so friendly and so willing to go above and beyond to help you. They just did a remodel and throughout construction there was no increase in weight time or decrease in service. A few months ago, Nicole Nimetz at Mission Federal helped me open up a checking and savings account for my teenage son. She was very friendly and extremely efficient. I just came back to her last week to finance a new vehicle we just bought. All I can say is that we finished the transaction all by phone and email. She is EXTREMELY responsive and is very on top of things. We finished the transaction within a few hours and she overnighted the check to the dealership that same night. I have an auto loan through Mission Fed. Did auto pay through Wellsfargo for months and after not receiving the bill pay MissionFed called me saying they never received it ( I understand that's not Mission Fed fault). Went into this branch, was told the manager isn't in a good mood and when she comes to talk to me about waiving the fee ( which Mission fed collections on the phone said was their discretion) said I would need a copy of the check that was sent out to waive the fee. The manager was not interested in seeing when the payment was sent through on my end and just wanted a copy of the a check. Lesson learned on my end to not do auto or bill pay with them and just go in person with cash or check because even if something out of my control happened they won't help or waive fees. Overall good interest rates great, but paying website bill pay interface isn't that great. As for customer service this is the second time leaving the store with a bad taste in my mouth. I've had better costumer service on the phone missionfed. If I could have the same interest rate with someone else I'd pick them. I'd say I don't feel valued as a customer and more I feel like a they just want to nickel and dime. Now I will go back to Wells Fargo and they will most likely pay me for the fee I'm getting from Mission Fed. read more

Update June 2014: just when I thought MFCU couldn't get any worse, it did. They declined to reverse overdraft fees for fraudulent activity on my Visa debit. Phone consultant was completely sarcastic. Unbelievable. If I could give zero stars, I would. I've been a customer for over twenty years. For some reason, in the last 5 years, customer service has seriously gone downhill at MFCU. First, they offer me overdraft. I used it and came to rely on it "just in case". Then one month I bounce a check. Why? They out of the blue cancelled it and never told me. Then I night drop a deposit into a little used account that I kept for an occasional joint check I get with a family member. I get the check back in the mail. They closed the account and never told me. Last October I night dropped a deposit. The sign says deposits are done that same business day if it's dropped during business hours. The check never got deposited and it caused several checks to bounce that night. Today I learned that they placed a hold on my deposit last Wednesday. The same deposit I make every single month for years now. I've never had funds held before. Long story short. it's because I have a history of bounced checks (yes, they mean the bounced checks from last October). The funds will release sometime next week. In the meantime I will likely bounce several other checks because NO ONE TOLD ME. all books down to one issue: no/ineffective communication with customers. I'm done with MFCU. read more

I came to MFCU for an auto loan. The moment I walked in I was greeted and referred to Jason to help me get started. Jason was extremely warm, informative and walked me through the whole process. I was a little nervous at first just because this was my first time buying a car on my own. He was so thorough in explaining everything in a way in which I understand. He also informed me that they have a complimentary service through Autoland where they find you a car through their certified dealers and connections. I was referred to America. She was amazing !! She found me a few different options and we discussed the benefits and what made the most sense financially and how my APR might fluctuate. This process was SO easy because it was all done under one roof. No going back and forth with different parties, crunching numbers, possible miscommunications , etc. It was so EASYYYY. I dont think I would do it any other way from now on! Everyone was fantastic, efficient and professional.
