Minto Park is a long and narrow park that spans a city block (Elgin to Cartier, Gilmour to Lewis,). It's snack dab the middle of downtown.
Lots of people there with their dogs. There are benches and some green space, but I see it more as a park to walk through than to actually hang out.
There is a memorial there that honours local women who were killed by men (most of them by their romantic partners). It's called Enclave: The Ottawa Women's Monument. There is one big stone and several smaller stones; each smaller stone is engraved with the name of a local woman who was murdered between 1990 and 2000. It is the site of many vigils and there is a gathering there every December 6th, which is the anniversary of the École Polytechnique Massacre. It's a very poignant installation.
There is also a bust of Argentinian General José de San Martín in the park. Admittedly, I do not know the history of this bust.
It's nice to have a park in the middle of city. There are a lot of eateries nearby in Elgin Street. So right now in the middle of the Covid Pandemic where restaurants are pretty much takeout only, it's nice to have a place like Minto Park where you can eat your food ;) read more
