This upscale restaurant is part of a hotel and some distance from the center of Geilo. The bar and…read morethe hotel check-in seem to be together--an interesting concept if true. The food menu is small, but more than adequate. One of us had a burger, which was thick in every sense, making it hard to get your mouth around, but very good. Another had the Croque Monseiur which was good, but not to be compared to those in France. The third had a club sandwich and said it was excellent. Service was good, although it was almost an hour from when we walked in until food was on the table.

While we didn't have any of their main entrees (which look really great by the way...and also really expensive), we did have their tomato soup which was flavored with lots of bacon. And who doesn't love bacon? They also have Hansa beer on draft. Service was good as well as the environment, which reminded me of a french bistro with a rustic twist. 4 stars.

They were out of halloumi for the vegetarian sandwich, but subbed brie (they asked me first!) and boy, did they sub a LOT of it. It is a ski town after all. Service was quick fast, the coffee barista made and nice. Didn't have a meal just coffee and cake, cakes were very naughty (in a good way), freshly made and didn't taste like they had been sitting around for a while which was good. Had the Oreo cake (oh my god) and my friend had the carrot cake which was much lighter. Definitely recommend dropping by!

We shared the taste…read moreof the mountains appetizer and each enjoyed a bowl of potato soup, which was excellent and paired very well with the small glass of chablis the waiter recommended. She got gluten-free bread with her herbed butter, while I got the house's tiny rolls. Our only criticism was that something described as a "tapas plate" should be shareable, but the appetizer was clearly designed for one person. Both of the waiters were very friendly and helpful.

We got the impression that they were understaffed as all of the servers were racing around to make sure every customer received what they needed. There is no music in the restaurant, but the decor is quaint and reminiscent of an old country tavern. We tried the hallingstuenes nevamat as a starter, and I had grilled mountain trout as a main. The hallingstuenes nevamat was excellent, and each of the four miniature dishes were artfully presented. The trout was a bit overcooked, but the sauce was perfect and the accompaniments were delicious. Overall, I would highly recommend Hallingstuene for a Norwegian dinner in Geilo if you don't mind a bit of a wait.

Driving down from our cabin we were excited to get to Fagernes to treat ourselves to dining out. We were a tad bit late and actually got into a small car accident rushing to get there before closing, but luckily the owners saw how desperate and frazzled we were that they kept the restaurant open for us. Fantabulous customer service! I ordered the spare ribs, my father had the steak with Bearnaise and my mother ate the house special of fish and chips. Portions were more then generous and very large. My ribs were excellent, the meat melted off the bone and they even had a sprinkling of rock sea salt which just enhanced all the flavors. Next to the bar is homemade bread that you can snack on before the main course, we enjoyed the spelt bread and carrot bread. If we hadn't been so full we would have bought 11 loafs of bread. Free coffee and tea too! The owners are Danish and on the weekends they hold service in their restaurant. Although I'm not a church goer I value this quirky addition, warm fire, fun art work and the owners feel like family. If I had it my way id stop there going up and coming down each time I made a hytte trip. Love this place. Makes the trip so much better :)
