Vasamuseet - Cannon from the ship

The Vasa Museum focuses on the Vasa warship, which was built in 1628 and, because of its top-heavy…read morestructure, sunk only a few minutes into its maiden voyage. In 1961, the ship was recovered from the seabed, restored, and put on display. This museum charges an admission fee for adults but not for children. I visited this museum one time, and my favorite part was, of course, viewing the Vasa. The ship sat on the bottom floor of the building, and I viewed the ship from different floors. It looked large and beautifully adorned, despite not having its original painted colors. I could still admire its joining planks, cannon holes, and carved sculptures. I also viewed other exhibits such as James Cameron's "Challenging the Deep." The museum also has a restaurant and a gift shop where I purchased a few souvenirs. The Vasa Museum was one of my favorite places to visit in Stockholm, and I recommend that others visit it.

When it comes to museums, there is such variety. The ABBA museum is not only a place you can…read moreeasity visit more than once, it truly was an experience. Very well done! Entertaining and interactive on so many levels. Every aspect was well thought out. The history of the individual members and band together, the costumes, the music, awards, etc. As I moved through the museum, I found myself thinking I could have stayed and enjoyed each room twice as long. Plan a minimum of 2 hours for a visit. If you are an Abba fan, this is the place to come to. I truly left sing Abba songs for days. Wow, just wow! One of my favorite museums ever!

First, it needs to be noted that the museum was created with a large amount of support from the band, so it's had an incredibly positive spin put on the story that's told - especially when you realize the group hated touring and both couples divorced during it's run. My favorite part were the costumes, which were incredibly interesting to see up close but the space was quite crowded and poorly designed for crowd control. The lobby was flashy with lights and music, but after entering the museum it felt like window dressing to try and make the experience look better than it is. So is the museum worth the $34 usd ticket cost? In my opinion no. It's overhyped and rather unpleasant when it's busy, but if you're a fan I could see it being worth it to you, if not just to get a closer look at ABBA's fabulous costumes.

I've heard so much about Skansen, but all the descriptions were vague and strangely nondescript. We…read morefinally decided to check out Skansen two days before midsummer, mildly apprehensive about the entrance fee since we still couldn't figure out what Skansen was about, but we hoped there would be midsummer decorations. There was confusion about the train route and after speaking to the gate agent, skipped the extra fee for the train to go up the hill. We were here to walk. At first glance, Skansen is a living museum of how things were done in the olden days, replete with actors. There were no midsummer decorations, though I was told the main thing was the may pole, which we had already seen erected on another archipelago. A delightful surprise was the animal farm (with an almost free roaming peacock) and the Nordic animal zoo. This accidental stumble on animals (bears, bison, reindeer, etc) was my favorite part of Skansen. Overall a neat place to spend an afternoon. Would recommend!

Not that you'll find crazy rides but there's entertainment for kids with some rides, plus not to mention the lounging areas, the animals, and so much more. The museum has an impressive permanent collection (pieces by Picasso, Dalí, Duchamp, Matisse, etc.). When we visited last week, I was really blown away by an exhibit made up of works from their permanent collection: "Pink Sails: Swedish Modernism in the Moderna Museet Collection." I wasn't familiar with too many Swedish artists, so it was a pleasure to explore this exhibit and experience art that was new to me! The museum is open late (until 8pm on Tuesdays and Fridays), which was great for us - it let us tag on a visit to the museum at the end of a full day of touristing around Gamla Stan. The museum is gorgeous, very modern, with a great gift shop, cafe, and restaurant. A really beautiful museum and well worth visiting if you're interested in modern and contemporary art.

The building looks impressive from the outside, but it feels a bit cramped in the inside. It's probably a number of wild kids running around and screaming inside the museum that might all the difference, who knows? *shrugs shoulders* but if you might want to avoid weekend (we had no choice) to enjoy this museum in quiet and peace. The museum itself has free entrance but a ticket is required to go to cosmonova (some sort of planetarium film thing, I suppose) so we stick to the exhibition only. Even that, there are so many to choose from and we wouldn't be done in one day, so we chose to go to the polar region and the Swedish nature. Both exhibitions are very entertaining and educational. I got to know a lot more that I thought I already know about these two regions and when you're in Sweden, you have to check out how big a moose actually is (yes, I have never seen one for real) or that how fluffy and white arctic fox is - especially if you have a fjällräven bag :) (good thing that the fox itself is only just a logo in the bag!) A must go for a science lover like me.
