Gosh, I wish we had places like this in Vienna! It's spacious and friendly with generous opening…read morehours; shopping is simply fun here. They have a full grocery store and a bakery plus a department store. There's a Starbuck's and some kind of a slush stand. There are bikes on sale, clothes, toys. ..pretty much everything you could think of. All this with plenty of parking space and opening hours every day from 8 am to 10 pm. That's a luxury that's practically unheard of where I live in Austria.

No visit to Odense's lovely Gågade shopping district is complete without taking in a French hotdog…read moreat this tiny, almost literal hole in the wall food stand. That goes doubly during the winter months, when there's nothing more comforting and delicious than indulging in a tantalizing bit of typical Danish street food! Nestled between a couple of multistory buildings, you'd probably miss this place unless, like me, you had the good fortune of traveling with a local that knew how to find such hidden gems. There are other places throughout Gågade to get a hot dog, but this place often has the best prices, the least crowds and the best food. The ambiance that you get from being nestled in a out of the way breezeway with shelter from the weather is an added bonus. I'm not sure they even call it Gittes anymore, as I know they've changed ownership, but it's the same operation it always was, and I still look forward to it on every single trip to Gågade that I make. Service has always been quick, food quality has never been an issue and they're just about always open. You simply can't go wrong stopping here with a good friend and downing one of Denmark's crowning achievements, the French hotdog. Highly recommended to anyone that happens to be day tripping in Gågade!

One star down for the fact that you pay quite a bit for the convenience. You can buy groceries cheaper in many Danish stores. Staff is friendly and helpful. It's good in a pinch!

They also have these great cranberry cookies which I love to bring back for all my friends and haven't seen at any other grocery store around. Prices were relatively cheap and they had a great selection of candy. We were looking for some spicy Danish chocolates and they had several different kinds for the brand we wanted. I even bought a new pair of shoes here. We were hoping to go back but never found the time. Nice spot to load up on some food or have a quick bite to eat. We went to the cafe (which also reminded me of Ikea) and got some traditional Danish food.

I loved stopping in and checking out all of the little smørrebrød. It was also a great place to practice some Danish. "Jeg vil gerne har en smørrebrød med røget laks, tak." On my final visit there, I discovered my favorite smørrebrød topping: smoked cheese. So delicious. And the smørrebrød is cheap, too! (Not always the case for Denmark.) I found this place a couple days before it was locked up for summer vacation, so I got only a little taste (quite literally) before they were closed for a few weeks. Fortunately I was in town long enough to be around for the re-opening, so I made sure to be there on that day. Anyway, if you're in the area, definitely check out this hidden gem.
