The Blue Mountains Food Co-op is the largest and most well stocked Food Co-op I've come across. I could lose hours examining all the different varieties of flour, exotic spices and dried fruit in their clean perspex tubs and jars. They have a great range of oils and condiments like mirin, tahini and Pukara Estate vinegars, plenty of locally grown, seasonal organic produce, a few hard-to-find bush foods and even fresh yeast in their fridge. Coming back to the snacks, I never visit Katoomba without buying some of their delicious dried fruit. It's none of that sugary, sulfur-y junk you get in weirdly greasy plastic bags in supermarkets. Nope, just beautiful fruit, dehydrated to lock all their glorious summer flavours and colours in. The dried apple slices and dried mango are my favourites, but I got my friend hooked onto their dried pineapple rings. The tamari almonds are super addictive too, and who can pass up freshly ground, natural peanut or almond butter - getting to operate the machines yourself is half the fun! And don't forget to bring your own clean jars and tupperware! Saves yourself a pretty 5c per paper bag and all that plastic waste.

Not that anyone who shops here'd mind. You spend longer waiting in a generic supermarket to buy over-processed, allegedly food-approximating substances anyway. I wish I lived closer to Katoomba and could do all my shopping here. Dragging your own containers up and down Katoomba street and then on the train make it a bit beyond even my patience. Yet I pop in when I go past for the odd fresh-as-anything locally grown vege, or the odd unusual ingredient hard to find elsewhere. The place is always buzzing with warmly clad, healthily fed people. The staff are lovely, and it's worth becoming a member if you shop here often, you get 10% off. Prices are fantastic to begin with, and the quality top notch organic-y, fair trade-y goodness. Sigh, I live too far away. Ha'Penny Lane is tucked behind the Post Office, and between Fresh and the Korean place if you're coming from Katoomba Street. Come armed with your own storage/packaging and be prepared to struggle out under a load of foodstuffs that'd make a doomsday prepper proud.

The fabrics were gorgeous and our only regret was that some of our favorites were not in stock and though they could be special ordered, we were too close to the end of our visit. Yep. An orchard. Pick your own apples. Here's the deal - you pay around 4 bucks a kilo for apples…read morethat you pick of the tree yourself. They will be the best, juiciest apples you have ever tasted (unless you grow your own). They won't taste anything like the perfect looking but average tasting rubbish that the supermarket has had in cold store for months. But it's a 2 way deal - The grower (a lovely bloke by the name of Cedric) gets about 4 bucks a kilo which is about 3.50 a kilo more than he gets selling to the supermarkets. And the supermarkets reject anything with the slightest blemish so he loses over half his crop each year. You aren't that silly and know that a tiny mark on the skin doesn't change the taste so he gets to sell more of his crop and not have to throw so much away. So...you get amazing apples. Cedric gets not ripped off. You prevent the waste of tons of perfectly good to eat fruit. Everyone wins. Support your local producers folks.

After wandering through a few shops in this heritage listed town we were truly hungry and ready for a good coffee and a nice lunch.The first thing that hits you when you walk in is the wonderful selection of baked goodies stationed in front to entice your need for something yummy- we resisted, knowing that some of these goodies will be riding home with us! It was a nice little cafe inside and the staff seemed very friendly. I decided on the Beef and Shiraz Pie-with hand cut chips and salad- it's nice to find a place that still uses real potatoes - they were great! The pie appeared to be mostly pastry but once cut into, had a very generous slow cooked filling that was very tasty. But the show stoppers were the fish and chips, and batter- dipped Prawns. We have a few places in Sydney that make nice fish and chips, but these dishes were right up there with the best we have had-fresh,crisp and perfectly cooked-the prawns were very generous and I was lucky to be handed one. If I went back I would order these dishes.I would have given this place a perfect score but two things kept that last star from being given.One is that I am still waiting for the promised jug of water the waitress said she was bringing- we would have asked again but the wait staff never checked back with us to make sure we were happy .The second thing is a common one in cafes- our meals came with salad that were drenched in dressing and were no longer crispy- I didn't mind so much but my wife has grow accustomed to asking for dressing on the side because she hates that! And she also hates coriander which wasn't listed as an ingredient so she was searching through here salad trying not to eat any. I found a few slices of fresh chilli in my side salad- another no no for the general population.Don't let this stop you from going there- just remember to ask for dressing on the side if you feel like we do.And the baked goods?
