'Run by bikers for bikers' is how Squire's Cafe describes itself, with what is possibly the UK's…read morebusiest biker cafe, even more so than the Ace cafe in London. The venue for numerous bike club meetings, the Cafe - also known as the 'Sherburn Cafe' (after nearby Sherburn-in-Elmet) or the 'Squire's Mike Bar' from its earlier days - hosts an incredible 10,000 bikers a week, on average. Yes - that's 10,000. Wednesday is apparently the busiest day, although it's pretty busy as week-ends too. It's situated just off the A1(M) motorway, on junction north of the M62 interchange (it's actually just off the old A1). As well as food and drink, there's a small (and a bit pricey) motorcycle accessory shop, and of course lots of parking (although this can get congested, especially in summer evenings and week-ends). Service also slows up when they are busy, so just be patient, sit back and admire the bikes. The site itself is a bit of a sprawl, and there's an outside servery at busy times, serving trad greasy-spoon fare such as burgers, pasties and fries (well, what do you expect at a biker venue?). There are veggie items available as well, in the form of cheese and tomato pizza, beans on toast etc. There are all sorts of events going on during the year, many raising money for charity, and an annual 'Yorkshire Rock 'n' bike' show, held in August. There's room available for camping as well, if you've brought your tent. A real mecca.

Good for bikers and basic experience during events. Just in need of a bit of paint and modernising.read more

As one might expect, there's acres of space to walk the dog, run around in, play games or just explore; there are several very attractive more formal gardens; there's a children's playground, two lakes, bandstands, a folly, a Visitor's Centre, at least one cafe, etc etc. And, of course, there's Roundhay Tropical World, which has a Qype entry in its own right. Car parking isn't too bad, although on the day we went (admittedly during half-term) we were lucky to find a space. There was also a slight lack of signage -- since this was our first visit, we could have done with more maps around. Some of the maps we found seemed to be Emergency Maps designed to show where the nearest life-belt was rather than anything more substantive about the place. That said, it is an excellent place for some fresh air -- highly recommended.

It can get very busy when there is the slightest bit of sun. But there is another car park on Weatherby Road, or on street parking on Princess Road or Park Lane. For dog walkers - 'The Gorge' is always a lot quiter than walking round the lakes!
