So I'm going to go out on a limb here... and write a review for Milestone's H.O.M.E. Team. Before I get to that, here's a little background info:
Milestone Foundation has multiple sites, this particular one is located in the downtown district, and serves individuals in the area with substance abuse problems. The building front is inconspicuous, and I've probably driven by over a dozen times without ever noticing it. They have separate floors dedicated to 1) offices and meeting rooms, 2) those who need a meal and a place to stay for the night, and 3) those who are enrolled in a recovery program. Every member of the staff that I met genuinely wanted to be there to help those in need.
My brief experience at Milestone was through an afternoon ride-along with the H.O.M.E. (Homeless Outreach and Mobile Engagement) Team. They work along with the City of Portland and the Portland Downtown District to help individuals with chronic health, mental health, and substance abuse issues who are living on the streets.
I've never realized just how many homeless people there were in Portland, and I was able to see and hear about the various ways that the City of Portland is trying to help. It really takes a joint effort from both individuals and organizations like Milestone to turn a life around, and I'm glad that places like this make it almost difficult to starve or have no place to sleep at night in this town. read more
