You will find this 3D mural on the front and side of an otherwise ordinary parking garage belonging to the Milhaus Grid Apartments. It is the work of Jackie Head, who did the piece in December 2020, in conjunction with Ignition Arts. The mural is made of hundreds of precisely arranged polyester resin tiles that resembles leave. It consists of two colors, teal and orange and was Head's largest public project until she did the cup project at the Indianapolis Airport in 2022.
It was inspired by Indy's grid structure, the Soldiers & Sailors Monument, and the Indianapolis 500. For those that may not know, Indianapolis was founded in 1820 and originally plotted on a grid structure, known as the 'The Mile Square,' by surveyors Alexander Ralston and Elias Pym Foundham.
This is a nice piece that I had past so many times that I had almost become numb to it. It is a very nice piece and is pleasing on the eye. I am a sucker for 3D murals. I will admit, that I cannot see the mural's backstory of its origin, but glad that I was able to find its context.
There is metered street parking available in front of the mural, as well as within a reasonable walking distance. Anyway, as with most memorials that I have visited and reviewed, this is not a long stop. I was there less than 5 minutes. So, you may want to consider planning out additional stops at many of the other attractions in the area, or making this stop part of a larger itinerary to maximize your time and trip. read more
