After doing some research online, I found Granlund Woodwind Repair. The owner, Scott Granlund, had a lot of recommendations from professional musicians in Seattle, so I decided his business seemed reputable enough for me to give him a shot. The shop is a bit confusing to find. It's a single room workshop located behind Clever Bottle in Belltown, and I mean literally. You actually have to enter the bar and walk through a door in the back to get to the place. The shop itself, though cluttered wall to wall with instruments, parts, and tools, is charming. Scott immediately plopped my instrument on a table and appraised the work needing to be done. He wrote up an estimate, told me it would take about a month and a half to completed everything, and I was in and out in about 10 minutes. Now I ran into problems when it came to the estimated time of completion. Though Scott had told me 6 weeks, 6 weeks turned into 8, which turned into 10. I was getting a bit frantic, but after several sessions of phone tag and some tense emails, we arranged a time for pick up. Overall, I was pretty happy with the repairs. His quality and craftsmanship were very good and I could definitely feel the difference when I started to play. It's a shame it took so long to have everything done, however. I would have given him 5 stars if it wasn't for that fact.

These guys are great. Can't say enough about them. The instructors are all top notch, all seem to…read morereally enjoy teaching. They have been flexible when one of the kids is sick. It is more like family there, than going for a 30 minute lesson, and they really care about you making progress. They also teach in a way that starts with "what kind of music do you like? What are your favorite songs?" And then you start from there, learning things you care about until it all comes together. If that wasn't enough, you have the ensembles...Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin, Clapton, Santana. What better way to learn than putting together a band for 10 weeks? But again, that isn't enough. How about pushing your comfort zone, and having you and your little band (and all the other little bands, etc.) perform at a local restaurant? Our whole family (5 of us) now takes lessons there, and definitely better than anywhere else I have been. I just wish they offered a family discount :)

His knowledge of the art of drumming is extensive and his lessons are always as informative as they are fun. He's great at breaking down complex rhythms into digestible parts that even someone with no music experience can master. For those who are more musically inclined, his more advanced ensemble classes allow you to explore densely layered rhythms and different techniques. I'm also a big fan of the intensive weekend workshops, or urban retreats, he holds. I attended a workshop where we learned a Senegalese Bak, which was a very cool rhythm. It was neat to hear the story behind how he learned it and the significance of the rhythm.

I found one that was not cheap but still met my limited funds, a pre-war Gibson L-50. I still have it and it sits out ready to be picked up and played each day. I would buy again from him when I am ready, more likely via video call and delivery since I'm now living out of WA state.

I came to David about a year ago with what I imagine is a pretty familiar story: I taught myself…read morewhen I was younger, but it didn't click, and now I want to learn for real. I wasn't expecting much, as I took my failure to learn previously as evidence I just wasn't very talented. Now, with a year of lessons and practice under my belt, I've made more progress than I thought possible. I never thought I could get good enough to solo, and now I can play and improvise solos pretty well in multiple keys. I can write chord progressions and songs, and my understanding and enjoyment of music in general has skyrocketed. In addition to teaching you songs, chords, and scales, David makes sure you understand the underlying music theory at the heart of music. This was the "aha!" moment for me, understanding that intervals between sounds are the basis for all music. Now when I sit down to play, I have a good understanding of where I want my chords/melodies/solos to go next, as opposed to banging out chords and hoping they sound cool.
