North Point Marina has plenty of places for putting a boat, but it's more than that. Also there's entertainment. There's things like banquets and live music. Came here the last time, and went to the beer garden. It has Harbor beers on tap. There's also cocktails, so you can get whatever. It's about $9 for a cocktail. The Harbor Lagoon is a good one. Could say it's a deceptively strong one, plus it's pretty cool looking. This is made with Blue Curacao, Long Island Mix, orange juice, pineapple juice, and Sprite. Also got some of the Knotty Pretzels, good with beer. There's not much in the way of food, but you can bring something to eat on the patio for sure. Have some good drinks and fun while boating. It's also close to a pretty cool nature preserve. This also has live music in the summer on weekends.

We booked our trip with Matt and were looking forward to it. It started out with Matt asking us to…read morebe there at 5 AM sharp in Racine, WI (I guessed they moved their location up North but that's good) so that we can start fishing early. And we did. Too bad Matt didn't bother to roll in until 6 AM. At 5:15AM we called and he said to stop by the fish cleaning station and he'll pick us up soon. 30 minutes later we called again and he hung up on my brother (Captain Matt must not be a morning person! Ha!). And it only went downhill from there. The real kicker is Matt's attitude. I don't know if he had a bad day or what (he actually was better towards the end of the trip) but it doesn't really matter. This could have been a lot of fun for all of us but we felt like he didn't want to be there (and yes, he did try to reschedule for another day the week before but Saturday was the only day we could do this). If he didn't want to go, he should have just cancelled the event. We would've found a different venue. As we got on board no one bothered to ask who's fished before and who's new to this. No rules were explained, no tips, no anything. Just "sit down, let's get this over with" type of approach. It's a shame because it had potential. The fishing part of the trip was fun and we landed 15 fish in 8 hours. Most of them in the first couple of hours which makes is a shame we couldn't actually start when he told us we would. They cleaned up the fish really nicely and quickly right on the boat. We actually enjoyed watched the crew do this. Pretty cool. I'm giving Matt and his business 2 stars because Yelp's description of two stars - "Meh. I've experienced better." sums it up perfectly. We'll go fishing again, just probably not with Matt, though :) So, in short - this could have been much better if the crew brought a good attitude with them on Saturday. Hopefully they will consider this next time.

The 2nd most popular state park in Illinois, Illinois Beach State Park was initially established in…read more1948, with the northern portion being added in 1982. It is located on over 6 miles of Lake Michigan shoreline, encompassing 4,160 acres. I spent a lot of summers here (both at the beach and the campgrounds) with my dad and brother during my youth, and was also the area where I proposed to my girlfriend over 30 years ago...was nice to stop by with my now wife on this rainy day. It's official name is Adeline Jay Geo-Karis Illinois Beach State Park, renamed for the former state senator and conservation advocate in 2010 (a year after her passing). I went to high school in the area, and she was an important presence during that time, often sponsoring various academic and community awards for local students. Since it was rainy and a weekday, the large parking lots and beachfront were pretty empty. We walked it a bit, collected some sand (recently started to collect and label beach sand to further document my travels). There is a 'resort' hotel on the grounds (which I remembered) and The Pavilion (a combination camp store, souvenir shop, and concession stand), which I didn't remember (makes sense since it opened in 2021). The latter was closed when we stopped by (has limited hours during the non-summer time and is closed during winter).

They had a fall festival this past weekend with free guided walks so I figured it would be safe for us. Loved the guided walk and how informative it was. This is a high quality state park with lots of native plants still intact. So the whole place is pretty deserted but it did rain in the morning. Cars with completely tinted windows drive around in broad daylight. Pretty scary...The campgrounds have security that do not allow you to pass through unless you are a camper so that would make it safe. I saw a few police cars in the area as well. Personally, this isn't for me but if you are street smart, know your way around the neighborhood, it's great for hiking.

For Father's Day I decided to charter a boat to do some fishing with my Dad... it turned out to be a day we will never forget. I've fished my whole life, but never on a charter on a lake like Lake Michigan, so I wasn't for sure what to expect. Captain Jim gives very thorough instructions on how and what he expects from you... and then he works his magic! He has 12 LINES out at once and constantly changed depths, speed, lures, etc.... whatever it took to make sure we kept catching fish. In saying that, we ended up catching the MAX AMOUNT of fish we were allowed to keep by law... the smallest fish was maybe 10-12 pounds... they were all huge, I've never seen anything like it! The biggest fish was a King Salmon... definitely north of 20 lbs. The cost to charter for 8 hours was $690... after tip the total was $870, and I don't hesitate to say it was the best $870 ever spent. We had 5 people (3 of my buddies joined in), so it turned out to be $170 a piece...everyone agreed it was more than worth what we got. Speaking of what we got... we ended up with 75 lbs of fish fillets... I'll be eating fish for the next year, and we split the fish up 3 ways!! If you're looking for a Charter, Captain Jim and Lucky Dog is where it's at... we drove up from downtown Chicago, and the drive was simple... no need to look any further, this is your guy. HAVE FUN!!
