I am a vegan living in Alaska..."Whaaaaat?!" And this means I usually can never eat out. HOWEVER, thank goodness my good friend/coworker recommended Middle Way Cafe to me. She found it when she did a week of being vegetarian and told me I had to try it. I was skeptical, but went there with my vegan-husband. We were so impressed, and have gone back multiple times. This is a great cafe if you have diverse folks in your group as far as foods. I'm pretty sure I've reviewed it already, but today I had to order keeping in mind a new personal food issue. Instead of getting a sandwich, I got a lettuce wrap, and that's why this is only a 4- star review. There were two large pieces of lettuce under the nicely arranged parts of the sandwich, so it looked like a salad, and that's how I ended up eating it. I put the spread onto the corn chips and wrapped my own lettuce around the other stuff. I didn't like that so much because all the pieces were big enough that i should have cut them up...but that would have cut through the lettuce too, making it a salad. Without the spread, which was going to be hard to get on lettuce, I didn't get the effect of the mixed ingredients. And I didn't have dressing if it was a salad. (I'm sure they would have given me some.) Kind of frustrating. Everyone else enjoyed their sandwiches and soup and bowls. Next time I will just order a salad. read more

This is the place to eat when in Anchorage. Excellent breakfast with fresh spinach. Love that they have fresh juiced veggies, BeetNik! If they have the African Peanut Soup, I always have to get it and being the piggy I am I still get a sandwich and have to wrap it to go. The Macro Wrap is another favorite. I've always ignored MWC because it looked like a dive/hole in the wall. One day I was starving and decided to just go in. I ordered the coyote burger and the salad with the raspberry chipotle dressing. The dressing has bite and the grain burger was tasty. My husband loves the spicy chicken on sourdough. I stopped in for breakfast today and ordered the Colours Tofu Stack. It was supposed to be topped with blackened tofu, but when I got to work and opened my box, it was missing. There have been a few times that I have ordered that the little things like the chips or my tofu wasn't included in my to go box. Overall though, my tofu stack was delicious. This will be my Saturday morning treat for some time to come. Their juice bar is only open until 4 pm, which is a bummer. Last weekend I did get to order the Jungle Love smoothie, and it was enjoyable. My daughter gulped it down before I got to really get a good taste. They also have baked goods, like cookies, carrot cake (to die for), zucchini bread! and banana bread. Get their split pea or asian squash soups. They are my favorite!! They also have K-Bay coffee. The vibe in the MWC is very relaxed, the wait staff are super friendly (and prompt), and the food is as fresh as it gets in the great white north. I had a large salmon patty burger and homemade potato soup with purple tortilla chips. Tasty, warm, and filling like Mom used to make immediately jumps to mind. Take a few minutes and look around at the eclectic mix of art-dujour while you wait. The local crowd runs runs from 17 to 70 something and everyone looked to be enjoying the food and good company. The Middle Way Cafe may have reinvented the snickerdoodle cookie! 2 soft cookies with a creme center baked to perfection with the perfect hint of cinnamon that isn't too overbearing You can tell the juice is fresh squeezed to order and contains a perfect balance of ingredients that leaves the mouth wanting more. More ice would have been great too considering the drink was at room temp. I recommend the 'Zinger' The sandwiches contained fresh avocado and crisp grilled turkey for a pact of flavor. The sandwich was also drowning in tomatoes so much so I had to remove a few. Overall at great experience at a local cafe that you can tell cares for local community pride in a large city. Disappointed in the service - We just tried this place for the first time because they have several good vegan options and we had a friend visiting that is vegan. The ordering process was relatively easy but the cashier didn't explain anything in particular (like that you get your own water, etc.), and the menu board doesn't describe anything on it. Thankfully they do have paper menus laid out so we stood to the side to look it over before ordering. It was steady but not slammed so we were able to find a table immediately. Then we waited, and waited, and waited. We waited over 45 minutes for 3 sandwiches, and others in our party ordered after us and received their sandwiches/soup 15+ minutes before we did (30 minutes is still a rather long wait for a sandwich). Just as we were about to just cancel our order and leave, our food arrived. The only thing keeping this from being a 1 Star review was that the food was ok. I liked mine more than my husband liked his, and our child had a basic pb&j. All in all I'd eat the food again, but idk if we'll return because the service was so terrible. read more

I decided to come back recently and see an old friend who lived out of town, and middle way is a common ground for her. I came early and sat down and the place was poppin! Very busy. I ordered a lavender rose almond milk latte and it came out fine. I was satisfied with it, it was very good. My friend and I shared the shepards omelet. It was delicious! Mostly I see myself coming here for coffee and socializing. Studying, not so much cause it's loud but if I had headphones it'd be a different story! Exceptional ambiance! Middle way has restored their image in my mind. Middle way has been a nightmare for me. I keep trying to like the place and come back, but EVERY TIME they just royally fuck up. From messing up my order to telling me that they don't have half of what I ordered thirty minutes after I ordered it, to getting an awful coffee every time I come in. It's just been hellish. I give up. Seriously, is your espresso machine okay? When was the last time you had it serviced? I ordered a 20 oz lavender latte the other day. I got it back and it was very dark (lattes are just never dark at all) and every sip I took was mostly syrup and tasted like an awfully oxidized shot. I took it back and had it remade and it was actually worse the second time :/ I don't know how they did it. Maybe they should just focus on the food and smoothie/juices? I find myself coming here all of the time when I am in Anchorage. And yes, it is crowded. But somehow they pull it off even during the lunch hour when it doesn't seem like there's room for anyone else. The service is great, and they bring your food to the table. The quality of the food and drink is consistently excellent. Food prices are good, but buying a juice drink is a splurge! I buy a juice drink now and then, justifying it because it's about the price of a fancy cocktail, and they're always delicious! I love this place! They discontinued my favorite beet and portobello mushroom burger, but I am currently experimenting with this dish. The chipotle sweet potatoes are amazing. The act that the dish is all veggies is a fun fact. It would be nice if the purple cabbage making the "bowl" was more edible. It's literally just raw. I've tried to cut it and eat it...and well it's not too tasty. The dish has zucchini pasta mixed in. I count 6 different veggies in this dish. I usually love this place and would rate them 4 starts, but today I called in a curb side pick up order because I work in a medical setting and try not to go inside restaurants due to Covid-19. I ordered an avocado melt on sourdough with chips and salsa. I called to let them know I was outside. I waited for over 40 minutes. I tried to call and check on my order, but was placed on hold multiple times. When the person finally brought my order out, they thought it was funny that my order was just sitting there forgotten. I expressed that I was on my lunch break from work and had been waiting for over 40 minutes for an order I called in before the lunch rush. The person said, "oops". I am very kind and understanding, I even still tipped for some reason. Arriving back at work to finally be able to eat, my sandwich is on wheat bread not on sourdough so I cannot even eat it. I am so sad! I am usually a regular, but was treated extremely poorly today. Come on, get it together. I try to support local business, especially during times like these, but YIKES! read more

Like other reviewers, I have a love hate review for Middle Way. I absolutely love their food and juices. I do not however enjoy their process for ordering and picking up to go orders. I do not understand why there would be two separate lines for ordering in and picking up, when they simply let anyone go to either line. I understand that people clearly do not read the sign and go in which ever side has less people. What I do not understand is why the employees do not courteously enforce these lines. Obviously, if you are picking up a to go order I would assume you placed a to go order because there is some sort of a time crunch where you can not sit down and dine. Nothing is more frustrating when you go into the phone order line to pick up your order and the cashiers are letting anyone waltz up and putz around the menu indecisively at the register while there are others behind who simply want to pay and leave. I understand the customer service aspect of this, however to avoid other customers dissatisfaction with this process, take away the double lines so there is no expectation to be taken care of separately. The whole ordering process is just a mess. In my opinion Middle Way should have gotten a complete renovation to create more room and functionality of the cashier section, instead of opening Hearth Pizza. Came here for lunch and wanted a burger. Liked the toppings for the coyote burger but didn't want a lentil patty. Asked the cashier to sub it with a beef patty. She said "it is beef". I think maybe the cashier must not know the menu. I told the women who brought my order that I had asked for beef patty. She walked away without saying anything. I sat for awhile wondering if she was going to correct it, or not. Just as I began to get up to go ask the cashier for a refund, after 20 minutes of waiting and not knowing--the women brought out my order with the beef patty. My parents and I visited here while on vacation. We're all vegan, so we were really excited to find a place with so many options in Anchorage. We even took a Lyft to get there from our hotel. The food we did get turned out to be really good, but what was so disappointing was that they didn't have almost all of their vegan menu items! Every time we'd ask for something the cashier would tell us in a very blasé way that they were out. We came in at 4, and they close at 6, so there's no reason for that. Anyway, everything turned out to be tasty. I can recommend the borscht soup, the BBQ burger, and the Baja bowl. Dad had a vegan smoothie he liked as well. read more
