As I sat on the new lawn, only 100 feet from the new stage and 200 feet from where my mother was born in my grandparents first home in the old city center Czech neighborhood, I admired the clarity, excellent precision, and beautiful sound of the Czech musical program: the Slavonic Dance of Antonin Dvořak, and later the incredibly rich tone poem "Vltava" from Ma Vlast by Bedřich Smetana, lifted me to join their spirits. Our Czech family heritage lives, and Oklahoma City has a jewel it should appreciate more in this Oklahoma City Philharmonic. Maestro Mickelthwaite added his quirky and entertaining leadership and kindly noted that we, the audience, were all sitting on the very heart of the original 1890s Oklahoma City (remember, it was only 3 square miles back then, not the 600 square miles we suffer from today!) And he pointed outward to the west side of the park where the old historic Czech Hall is still standing, ready for the opening of its Beer Garden, and a new program of music for our city and lots of Polka Dancing for our children (ages 2 to 102). And it is the wealth of musical talent and experience from these members of the Oklahoma Philharmonic who will contribute to that new music venue at the Czech Hall of Oklahoma City, Lodge Laska. While Mozart composed works of unrivaled and unprecedented beauty-- the likes of "Symphony No. 25," "Lacrimosa," and "Dies Irae"-- and later Strauss, famed for his classic waltz piece, and likewise an ode to the city's famed Danube, my ancestors proudly called Vienna home. They watched the city rise to become the heart of culture in Europe, and they remained in the city until nearly a decade after World War II. Now, here I am in a place that is the polar opposite of Austria's esteemed capital. The Oklahoma City Philharmonic certainly leaves something to be desired. While anything "Oklahoma City (insert cultural venue here)" makes one want to pinch the city on the cheek and say, "oh, that's so cute!" it still leaves a cultural void and vacancy for the would-be attendee. Their schedule is quite sporadic and erratic, and performances are relatively far apart from each other. This is in contrast to the New York Philharmonic, where musicians perform frequently and almost year-round. Sadly, it seems that musicians in the Oklahoma City Philharmonic need to request a night off from their shifts at Starbucks to perform on the occasional night they do have a show. I do give it two stars for effort, and being a step or two above what one might expect: "A Night With Toby Keith: An Orchestral Experience of a Homegrown Maestro"...or "Blue Collar Opera: Featuring Larry the Cable Guy and Brett Butler in a duet of 'Libiamo ne'lieti calici', Bill Engvall singing "Habanera" and Jeff Foxworthy performing 'O mio babbino caro'." While it seems to have managed to stay around, this organization needs some improvement, but methinks the local market will not support an expansion.

This is a small venue which was sold out tonight. I seen something that said 200 capacity but tht would be pretty tight I think. Anyway they had it set up with 5 rows across in front of the stage with anywhere from 12-16 chairs per row. They weren't all the same. Then around tht were round bar top height tables with tall chairs(weren't very comfortable IMO). Behind tht was the sound guy and the snack area. Candy, popcorn, side, water, coffee etc. They also were offering a root beer float which I found odd but hey. Why not. Everything was reasonable. Raised up a bit so they could make a profit but not gouging like some places. The acoustics were decent and the sound didn't overpower. They have shows there most Saturday nights with local talent. Parking is usually 10 bucks in most of the lots but there was a concert at the Paycom arena so parking lots don't mind gouging at it was 20 but if you were going to use one of the city lots with their online pay credit float a loan if you are going to be there for awhile.
