I was quoted $6,500 with a $2,000 retainer. My experience was nowhere near what I expected for that level of expense. It took approximately five months for anything to be filed. After that, I continued to experience delays and communication problems. Approximately four months later, I was still frustrated that my attorney had been unable to negotiate something as important to me as spring-break parenting time with my children. Communication was another major problem. I routinely felt like I had to chase the firm for answers. At times, I waited five or more business days for a response to an email, only to have to follow up again. Some responses felt generic and did not actually address the questions or concerns I had raised. The financial experience was also extremely frustrating. I ultimately paid approximately $8,500, only to be charged another $972 on top of that. The most disappointing part came when I appeared before the judge regarding Ms. Blackledge being relieved from my case. She was approximately 20 minutes late to a hearing scheduled for only 15 minutes, and the judge had to repeatedly attempt to contact her before she appeared. After spending thousands of dollars, I expected communication, urgency, preparation, and meaningful progress. That was not my experience. When you're a parent fighting to maintain a relationship with your children, months matter. Missed opportunities for parenting time matter. Communication matters. And thousands of dollars in legal fees matter. My advice to other fathers is simple: interview multiple attorneys, get everything in writing, understand exactly what you're paying for, and don't assume that a high price automatically means you'll receive the level of service you expect. This is my personal account of my experience as a client, and prospective clients should make their own decision after researching the firm and speaking with the attorney directly.
