Held about once every other month, Van Weldon, owner of Wood Duck Farm, opens his farm to visitors for a tour and dinner prepared by a chef. The latest dinner held was prepared by Drew Wilson (former executive chef of Benjy's). Our experience started with an informal reception, while we waited for all the guests to arrive. Once everyone was there, we proceeded with the farm tour. Van grows various types of lettuce, tomatoes, herbs, micro greens, broccoli, beets to name a few. He also raises chicken and pigs, all of which you will see during the roughly 60-minute tour. Our dinner consists of food produced by his farm or from surrounding local farms. Chef Drew did a terrific job in keeping the foods simple, allowing the freshness of the food to speak for itself. Dinner was a five-course meal, served family style. Drinks were BYOW however, they do provide water, iced tea and lemonade. If you don't feel like driving an hour away to Cleveland, you can catch Van every Saturday morning at Urban Harvest Farmer's Market in Houston. In addition to fresh produce, he also sells a variety of prepared foods like whole smoked chicken and seasonal soups to name a few.

We were greeted at the side door by the grandmother, who gave us a personal tour. We saw chickens (who were really running the pecking order), goats, pigs (living their best hog life), ducks (quacking us up), a rabbit (hopping into our hearts), and a cat who clearly thought it owned the farm. My kids (1 and 3) had a hoot, especially petting the goats. We also picked up some handmade soap. All in all, an egg-cellent experience with a nice family running the place. You see all the farming that is taking place as you drive into the property. This is family property and the oldest couple (Larry and Shirley) are the farmers. You see dogs relaxing around the property. You see kids fishing around the property. These mid 70s couple have their children help them sell stuff for them. The kids put in sell equity to ensure their parent's sweat equity also makes it to their households. I'll say this about their produce - if they don't think it's good, they will not sell it. They guarantee satisfaction with their watermelon. I've never heard of that before, but they do it. They are that confident about their stuff. I saw a Facebook live post with all their goods, and they were almost completely out by the time we made it there. I saw potatoes, 1 tomato, corn, watermelon, yellow squash, purple hull beans, and onions. I also saw cantaloupe, but they refused to sell it because the sweetness was not consistent from fruit to fruit. Bring cash to make it easier on everyone. Oddly enough, they do checks as well. Supporting local farmers is easy when the farmers are this friendly.

My 2 year old was free. $2 for a bucket (must use a Froberg's bucket for picking). We bought 2 to share among the 4 of us. We filled both close to the top (close to 6 lbs total). I'm not sure how much it cost per lb since I didn't pay, but i think it was $5/lb. Credit card does incur a 3.99% fee. We also bought some bbq: brisket sandwich, hotdog with turkey sausage and jalapeno sausage, Arizona green tea, bottled water, and 2 sausages to-go (jalapeno pork & deer sausage and regular sausage). It was a lot of food actually for $48. We also bought some baked goods to-go (especially enjoyed the oatmeal cookie, chocolate cookie, and pecan pie) . Cookies were $1.50 each or $12/dz. The medium pie (about 4 servings) was maybe $6-7. Being a Friday, there was not much to do at all because all the rides, games, and food trucks only run on the weekends. I guess it saved us money at least bc everything cost $3-4 (tokens). We still managed to stay 2 hours (it made our 1 hr drive worth it) because we ate the bbq at the shaded picnic tables while my 2 year old played on the playground. It's a small playground, but it had her favorite things- swings, slides, and a tire tower to climb. She had fun. I may go to Blessington for the pumpkin patch this fall (based off reviews), but fruit picking is pretty fun here.
