Bless the Metro. Whilst most of the trains and buses around Manchester city centre have ground to a halt because of the snow, the Metro is still running tickety-boo. There are reports of the Eccles line closing temporarily but as I type the rest are still transporting people to and from Old Trafford, Sale and other suburbs at their normal zippy speed. Of course some ticket machines are out of order and some still don't have any change but what the heck, these are minor grumbles. The Metro is still cleaner, cheaper (Return tickets cost approx £2.20) and more efficient than other transport modes like London Tube! Call it great engineering, clever forward planning or balls made of steel - whatever the reason, it's good to know there's one North West transport company that are able to confront The Big Freeze head on!

The Metrolink. Manchester's answer to London's Underground...what a joke. There are just so many things that the Metrolink does wrong! First of all, closing the tracks constantly with all sorts of different excuses about maintenance, renovation, track upgrading, blah blah blah! It's still the same crappy service, ticket machines which do not take cards and rarely accept notes, no conductor so you have to buy a ticket before you board or else (WHY do they not just change this already?!), smelly old trams which are just not adequately set out for the level of business that they get...the list of complaints goes on. What's most annoying is that they keep promising a better service. The trams links in the city centre have been closed for months and have just re-opened...has anyone noticed the difference?! Not really? Sure they dug up and relaid the track, we saw them doing that but has it made any difference to the service?! They have promised all new trams and ticket machines by Autumn which have not yet materialised...you better get your skates on Metrolink, you've not got long left.

Trams trams trams, apparently trams revolutionised transport in central Manchester. I'm not so sure to be honest there is still a lot of cars in Manchester which are an absolute pain in the arse to cyclists such as me and my mate (who got clipped by a tram today, by the way). The trams serve a few major spots and you can get either side of a compass in one of them. Don't get on without a ticket though otherwise you face the very real chance of getting arrested by the tram police (happened to a friend). The trams go to Altrincham and all over the show really, if only more people used them hopefully we wouldn't have to dodge traffic on our bikes for years to come.......

After getting a temp job in Altrincham I realised this would either involve an incredibly long bus journey or a walk down to Stretford and a tram ride which would get me there in minutes. However, - it was pretty expensive (£3.50 peak return) - the ticket machines rarely functioned as they should - I often missed the tram due to a huge queue of school kids trying to use the machine - on several occasions I had to get off at Timperley and wait for another tram due to technical problems - the service wasn't great when it snowed - on one occasion I had to walk from Navigation Road to Altrincham due to a signal failure On a positive note, - I discovered it was much cheaper to buy a weekly pass from the travel office, which I could then upgrade to cover buses too (£6.50 extra) - it usually got me there on time - I got a sense of satisfaction when all the fare dodging scallies got caught (almost every day) - the trams were pretty empty, at least compared to the packed commuter trams heading from Altrincham towards Manchester Hopefully after the introduction of the new trams, the ticket machine upgrades and the digital information boards which have been proposed the Metrolink will be better than a-ok. It should probably learn a few lessons from its efficient European counterparts.

I'm so glad the Metrolink is up and running again. When I first moved to Manchester last summer, the place was a mess of engineering works, boarded up platforms and diggers. The work seemed to take over the whole feel of the city. And then, thankfully and suddenly, it was all gone. I could finally see what the Metrolink was all about. I've used it a fair few times to get to work at Lancashire County Cricket Ground, and it made the 25 minute drive and annoyance of finding a parking space ludicrous when I could do the same journey from Shudehill in just 15 minutes. It's quite annoying that the ticket machines don't seem to give change, and the displays are quite hard to read. Apparently they are replacing these ticket machines soon, so I wait with baited breath for an improvement. If you're a pedestrian, the trams can be quite dangerous as you're always crossing over the lines when you walk about town, so make sure you look both ways. Otherwise you'll get a very loud honk from a tram and everyone will look at you.

The station has nice views of the city, including the huge Deansgate Towers including Beetham Tower, home to the Hilton Hotel on the same side as the Piccadilly Bound Platform. The station is modern and clean in most areas, I do think the lift could be given more regular maintenance though, but this can be said for the network as a whole as they can often become smelly/dirty. To get between the city centre bound platform and the Cornbrook bound platform it is a little difficult as if you're unable to go up steps it involves walking the whole length of the platform and back again, it's a shame this couldn't have been constructed better. The double platform in the middle is useful as it means trams can start and terminate here, which is rare to find on the network - Strangely most trams on the Trafford Park lines carry on from here after "terminating at Cornbrook" to go back, which makes no sense. The station seems to be reguarly supervised and staffed, as with most city centre zone 1 stations. 4*

The station's layout is easy to follow, although it is split into two bus stations, most of which do go from the main terminal. Buses from here serve most of Manchester including Bury, Bolton, Salford, Rochdale, Middleton and the MRI. National Express also run coaches from here going across the country. I would love to see digital bus timetables showing when the next bus is, which I've seen in other locations across England, which perhaps could list destinations and towns showing the next bus to go there, which means you can always get the next bus and know how long it'll take without the need for third-party mobile phone apps. The staff inside the station seem friendly, and although they do try to help it stay clean, it doesn't always stay that way, mainly down to members of the public openly making a mess including smoking (which is forbidden), or the occasional litter or pigeon problem. There is an ATM outside (Be careful as this is a common spot for homeless people), newsagents and a coffee shop (which never seems to be open) at Shudehill. 3*

However please read the following with caution....this is my first experience of first class so please excuse me if this review appears to be rose tinted! The room is tucked away from the main concourse of the train station on the first floor, it was smaller than I expected but by no means cramped. There is a collection of black leather sofas and chairs which could comfortably seat about 15 people, but easily more than this if you don't mind sharing your sofa. However for the time that I was present there were never more than about 7 or 8 of, so I didn't need to worry about sharing my sofa anyway... The view overlooks the main concourse of the train station, which really isn't that bad at all. I took particular pleasure in watching all the stressed busybodies rushing around with suitcases in tow, whilst I was stretched out sipping coffee. Speaking of food and drink, the variety is rather and generous. There is coffee and a selection of teas, or if cold drinks are you fancy: choose between still and sparkling water, lemonade and Pepsi (both diet and normal of course). However if you're peckish as opposed to thirsty, you might want to benefit from a little plate of olives, which I must say was a rather nice touch, and they were very tasty as well. Failing that, some crisps maybe? The posh kind, Anglesey sea salt flavour if you please. There is a nice little collection of biscuits as well - banana and butterscotch flavour being my particular favourite. The best thing about all that...is that it appears to be unlimited. Nobody seems to bat an eyelid if you feel the need to go and get yourself another packet of biscuits with lemonade every 5 minutes and then subtly slip them into your handbag (I'm a student - don't judge). Ruddy fantastic. The only things I can think that could be improved are these: there is only one option for coffee and I prefer to be able to choose between my cappuccinos, lattes and americanos. Secondly, there was nothing first class about the toilet, but even that didn't bother me really. All in all a very pleasant experience indeed! There is even a little television screen with all the train times on it, very useful for people like me who need constant reminders. I can only hope this isn't a one-time experience and that one day I may be able to afford first class again!
