The Butchery

The Butchery

(23 reviews)

I just discovered The Butchery. What a revelation!…read more The shop is clean and attractive, with a very long display of many dozens of cuts of meat, many marinated. I bought a marinated flank steak that was amazing on the BBQ tonight. They also carry some great sauces, including my favourite Rufus and Teague Blazing Hot sauce. You can buy frozen pies from The Big Apple, which are the best pies around. They have a burger shack inside....sadly I was too early. Some other time. The staff is very friendly and helpful, the boss a really good man. This was a great discovery and I will happily drive the 25 km to get there. Very highly recommended.

Don't come here hungry! Wow!…read moreThis popped up when I plugged in 'butcher' near me. 15 min away. My first visit was a Sat. So busy! And for good reason. I was blown away by all the meat, the prepared goods. Burger counter. Some seating. Freezer choices. Some dried goods, bread. I got away with Chorizo, some lean ground beef and some beautiful olive oil. Is this place cheap? No! But, I pay for quality without batting an eye. Especially foodie stuff. Next round was a Tuesday aft. Ahhh. Better. I could see everything, not so packed. It was just after a long weekend so some things were sold out but I grabbed more lean beef, a chicken parm portion, a beef Jamaican patty and a stuffed potato. All were good! The chicken portion from the fresh cabinet was $11.50! More than my lb of ground beef! But it was a filling piece and fed me x 2. I love this place.

Lebanese Food Centre & Bakery - Rotisserie Chicken

The Short Version: Small Lebanese grocery store in Bells…read moreCorners that also sells prepared foods. I found their meat pies to be just ok. However, their staff were very friendly and welcoming. The Long Version: This review is for their meat pies. I love Lebanese meat pies. Ever since my first meat pie at Aladdin's so many moons ago, I became addicted. I also introduced them to my husband and my entire family and they all love them too. So it might come as no surprise that my mission is to try all the places that sell Lebanese meat pies in Ottawa. So when I found Lebanese Food Centre and Bakery on Google Maps, I made a note to check them out when I was next in the neighbourhood. I got 2 meat pies ($3.50 each). I ate one right away in the car, lol, and brought the other one home for my husband. I found the meat pie ok. These ones didn't have that smokey flavour that I love. And I feel it could have benefited from some spice. I did like that the dough wasn't too thick or fluffy. It was thin and slightly crispy on the outside. The amount of meat was good but I feel I would have liked more tomatoey tang. It's just personal preference but I like my Lebanese meat pies a bit spicy, tangy from the tomatoes with a touch of smokey flavour (I'm guessing from smoked paprika) and the one here didn't have those elements. The man serving me was very friendly and welcoming and I appreciated that. They are a small grocery store but also have fresh meats, and prepared foods. They sell rotisserie chicken, grilled chicken and skewered meats. They have a charcoal grill. And they have some sweets too. I saw Kunafe and Shaabiyat. I would return to try their desserts and maybe a shish tawook wrap or something else from their grill. They have a few picnic tables out front to eat at. They are located in a small plaza. Free parking available in the plaza parking lot. Review #200 (2025)

Fresh and tons of it Biggest carrots I've ever seen!? Same with the seafood. I only go here for frozen shrimp and scallops now. Cheaper. Good quality. Steaks too, good cuts. Cheaper again. There is a seafood room with fresh lobsters, fish etc. There is a fresh food area where food goes by weight. I've done this x 2. Good but very expensive. Lots of packaged noodles which I love. So many things I've purchased on a whim. IE soup dumplings and frozen chive pancakes. Yum. Staff upon check out and in aisles... No. Not great but it won't stop me from coming.. and... 4 easy stars.

TL;DR/The Short Version: Asian grocery store at Grant…read moreCrossing. Big, bright and clean. Mostly items from China but they have items from other countries too. The Long Version: My parents first introduced me to Green Fresh when they only had one location (the OG that was on Selkirk, that has since closed down). It was dingy and run down, but had lots of Asian ingredients that they were looking for. And it was the closest Asian grocery store to where they lived. They were thrilled when it moved to McArthur and had a total facelift, it was new, bright and clean. Green Fresh then opened a second location in Nepean on Merivale, closer to my neck of the woods. Then in January 2025, they opened this third location in Kanata/Stittsville. It's in the Grant Crossing, where the Bed, Bath and Beyond used to be (next to the Value Village). This newest location is very similar to the Nepean location. It even has the same bubble tea vendor inside (Y-Not Go For Tea). Which is a bit funny because the first Y-Not Go For Tea location is inside the Hunt Club T&T and T&T and Green Fresh are competitors! The Vanier Green Fresh has a different bubble tea vendor though: World Tea House. I visited this Kanata/Stittsville location shortly after opening, so maybe they don't have all their stuff together yet because although they have a section labelled "Bakery" they didn't have any baked goods :( However, they do have a prepared food section. It's self-serve and you pay by the weight ($2.29 per 100g). They also have a counter where they make Jianbing, Chinese crepes. There was a huge line up for these when I went, so they are definitely popular. They have lots of items, including snacks (my favourite aisles), lol. Most of the products are from China, but they have items from other countries too. They had Kracie DIY gummy kits imported from Japan. And they were only $4.99. The west end is now flush with Asian grocery stores (T&T, Kowloon, now Green Fresh, and soon Sunny Food Mart) compared to the east end (to my parents' chagrin). I'd say the prices here are the lowest generally speaking. However, the prepared foods did not look as appetizing to me as at the other Asian grocery stores. Free parking in the plaza parking lot. Not for nothing they call this a "Superstore"! I could easily get soooo side-tracked in this…read morestore... it really is HUGE, and they don't only sell groceries, but also household items as well, from towels to dishes, and clothing to cookware. My significant other is especially good at steering me away from the back of the store so that I don't get caught buying another gadget! They don't always carry the same items; a few years ago, they had stoneware loaf pans at a really excellent price - about $7.00 each. I had bought one through the Pampered Chef (which I love and still use), but I would have bought another one here (at that price!) so that I could have made 2 loaves at once. The best way to shop here is to have a list and stick to it. Since the local newspapers are no longer being published, the flyers are not getting distributed like they used to either, so it's more difficult to know what's on sale there. I've just installed a new app called "flipp", and will try to keep tabs on the specials - not only at this store, but everywhere we shop.

TL;DR/The Short Version: Ottawa's second T&T Supermarket…read more Smaller than the first, but still has lots of cool Asian products. The Long Version: This T&T Supermarket location is in Hazeldean Mall in Kanata. It's where the Laura's Your Independent Grocer used to be. It just opened at the end of October 2024. We went the beginning of November 2024 so it was still brand spanking new. I took my parents here to check it out and see how it compares with the other location on Hunt Club. Our consensus was this Kanata location is smaller with less selection than the original location. We were happy to visit and see what it's all about, but since the Hunt Club location is closer to us, we'll continue to go to that location instead. The bakery section at this Kanata location is much smaller, as is the prepared foods section. I also noticed that they use sesame seeds in a lot more of their sushi than the Hunt Club location. As someone who can't eat sesame seeds and can rarely buy prepackaged sushi, this made me sad. They have dim sum and Chinese BBQ and also an area to eat the food you purchase. It's good court style seating. I did notice their impressive selection of imported Lay's chips. Their selection was comparable to the other location in this regard. I doubt I will return unless I'm already in the area for another reason because it's far from my home and I rather go to the Hunt Club location, but I think it's great for Kanata residents. And it's breathing some much needed life into Hazeldean Mall. Lots of free parking in the mall parking lot. (200)

The inside of the store is clean, the lighting is good, there's a lot of parking & direct access by bus. I went on a Thursday, it wasn't too busy but I was still having to navigate around people and bumping into a few others. Also, if you are someone that likes making soups and stocks you can get chicken bones here for $1 per pound

One thing I really liked about this shop is its size - it's HUGE! It is bright and clean and has loads of variety. Lots of beverage alternatives (Finally, not your run of the mill soft drinks!) The shop made me think of my sister, who has specific dietary needs. While I was thinking of her, wandering the aisles, she called me! How's that for perfect timing? I think she'd love it here, and will have to bear this in mind for next time she travels this way. They offer a number of glutten free items, which even I wouldn't mind trying, like breads. These are just different that what you can buy ready made, or what you can usually make at home (out of regular wheat ingredients).
