They would stick to their same methods of worship and did not like change. When I attended the Journey I was greeted by many smiling faces which was great! When my family is in town I attend the Journey with them every time. Each time, I have had such a great experience. I really enjoyed hearing Kerrick preach. His messages are unique, they address topics that I have not heard before. I really liked his message on Prayer. His message notes allow you to follow along and keep something to recall what was discussed that Sunday. I live in the Bronx and I don't like to travel into Manhattan a lot. So, being able to watch live from the comfort of my own home makes things a lot easier. It is a wonderful church and I really do enjoy attending. I definitely recommend attending the Journey so that you may experience it for yourself!

She'll be living in NYC for the next month while training for an abroad program for her senior year of high school, and her biggest concern about being away from home was leaving behind her Christian friends, church, and faith community. From the moment we walked in, Dionna made us feel so welcome and introduced us to Pastor Carrie. The worship, music, and message were wonderful, but what happened afterward meant the most. Dionna gave my daughter a card with her personal number and told her to reach out if she needed anything while in NYC. Pastor Carrie then introduced her to three local college students who regularly attend Liberty. They exchanged contact information, and she'll now have people to connect with and attend church with while she's here. It's amazing how God works. In one visit, He provided exactly what my daughter was worried she would be missing..Christian friends, a church, and a community. As a mom leaving her daughter in NYC, I can't express how much that meant to me. Liberty Church didn't just make us feel welcome for a Sunday; they made sure my daughter would feel welcomed and supported after I left. We are so grateful and absolutely recommend Liberty Church NYC!

I first started out going to the 11:30 am mass and loved it. It does fill up but not so much to where you can't breathe. Its comfortable. My first time there, I was blown away by Fr. Duffel. He is a gem! His homilies are relatable and never judgmental, which is so rare to find. He ends each one with the question, "Do you believe in this Christ Jesus? Do you struggle to live accordingly to his way?" At the end of mass for announcements, before the final blessing is given, I call it Fr. Duffel's comedy minute. He asks where the new people are from, cracks a small joke, and then happily welcomes everyone to Ascension. I felt so loved just being asked where I was from and knowing that this church really did not deny anyone. This church likes to drink and have a good time too, which is really funny and perfect. Mimosas on the first Sunday of the month, Martini Wednesday, and wine, beer, etc in between. They understand the importance of community and making people feel part of the church. The biggest surprise was that they have weekly potlucks with the LGBT community. This made me so happy to know that this church really fights to not close its doors to anyone and not make judgement no matter. I have recently migrated to the 6:00 pm mass which is a whole different vibe with the jazz duo. Let me just say that the jazz duo steals my heart every time and just makes the church all that much better. The man on the bass looks like Eric Clapton but sounds Michael Buble. If you ever have time to stop by this mass, I encourage it because it is a blessing. Ascension Catholic Church is simply the best and I am so thankful that this church is making a lot steps in the right direction.

I don't know anything about the senior pastor at all so I can't comment about that. Usually visitors to a church assess the church by the sermon and music. But I have the unique experience of assessing by the inner workings I have observed and taken part in. Calvary Baptist Church is the church that the Billy Graham Association uses when they either have an event in NY or when they have a TV event and need phone counselors. I do have to comment on what one of the reviewers said. They said they like it when only one pastor preaches. I have to respectfully disagree. It is much healthier for the church members to hear different perspectives rather than just one person and it also shows that the pastor is not a control freak. If he was he would be hesitant to share the pulpit. It is also healthier for the pastors to be able to hear what others are saying in order to grow spiritually themselves. That way they can be accountable to the other pastors and not just be a dictator. If you know of a large church where the pastor refuses to share the pulpit be sure he is a dictator. Having more than one preacher is a healthy sign especially in a large church. The pastor I have worked with projects on at Calvary is extraordinarily humble so much so that he would be embarrassed at being named in a review so I won't name him. I worked under him on some volunteer projects and his leadership is what made them run smoothly. He had respect for all of the volunteers and didn't feel he had to control us or even know much about us in order to trust us to do our jobs. At many churches these days the control issue is big. If you don't let them control you then you are called rebellious. I am referring to churches you would know of if you are a Christian in NYC. I never experienced this at Calvary. Volunteering here was always an uplifting experience. Calvary is spiritually and socially solid. For my non conformist personality denominational churches seem too restrictive with their man made rules and regulations that have nothing to do with God but rather tradition. Calvary did not come across that way at all. The congregation seems to have freedom and is warm and friendly. They seem to be less self absorbed than many other large congregations in NYC. Many large churches in NYC have this attitude that you go to church and don't dare reach out to anyone because they have their own lives. Calvary doesn't seem that way. My volunteer work with them was from 2001 -2009. So I was able to observe how they function with each other over the course of many years. It is kind of silly to me to read 5 star reviews of other churches I have seen here by visitors to a church who may be touched by the music or theater of it all or the pastors charisma but know nothing of what goes on in the day to day functions of the church. I happen to know the inner workings of a few of those churches and I know they are at best cult like in terms of how they function. But if you attend the service as a visitor all you see is the production they put on. Calvary is pretty basic and sincere from what I have seen and by basic I mean no theatrics to fool you. Unlike many other NYC churches Calvary is not known for their pastor so it is not man focused but God focused. I have been a Christian after being an agnostic for years since the 1980's. I have been to many churches in NYC and know people at most popular churches in NYC due to my volunteer work. I have never heard anything bad about the church and it is the only large church other than Evangel I haven't heard anything bad about in the last 20 plus years that I have been a Christian. For that they get 5 stars. There are no scandals here unlike many of the other large churches in NYC. Here is a list of the ministries they offer. Outreach Missions Arts and Media Education Men Women Young Adults Youth Children New York School Of The Bible The New York school of the bible offers a certificate program. Calvary is a good solid caring church.
