Many people refer to this city as "The City of the Guggenheim", as when this original museum was built in 1997, Bilbao was changed forever. In fact, to this day it is making an impact due to its groundbreaking structures created by prestigious architects, and it serves as an international reference point for modernity.
There's a unique character in this city, which might come from charming streets and bars offering pintxos, proof that they are passionate about good eating.
It's impossible to imagine Bilbao without its characteristic old town, with over 700 years of history. It's a pleasure to stroll around the famous "Seven Streets" and discover iconic buildings such as the Cathedral or the elegant theatre inspired by the Paris Opera House, the Arriaga, and a mix of shops and cafes, from traditional to cool.
As I was strolling around old town, I rested in front of a small plaza with a nice restaurant with an open patio. One of the waiters saw me and made a gesture, like "be vigilant"... I wasn't sure why he'd say that, but about 15 minutes later, I witnessed a guy trying to steal an expensive camera from a couple that was taking pictures. The couple, quickly noticed and confronted the guy and after recovering the camera, the guy ran away....That's way when you visit tourist areas, you need to be extremely careful and be aware of your surroundings.
The city of Bilbao is proof that gastronomy is an art in the Basque Country - one of the areas with the most Michelin Stars per person in the world. You can find tons of bars serving the famous pintxos: small, delicious bites of food. Here, foodies like me can find their place among the buzzing bars, family-run restaurants and prestigious chefs...all at any budget and price point, just need to do your research and find them...
