My girlfriend and I were in the area, and she decided that I needed to try a jam filled Berliner. Being an American, it's always an interesting experience for me to see how different things are here in Germany in terms of food establishments. As I'm standing outside of the bakery, I am witnessing a SWARM of bees gnawing on the cinnamon rolls. I have never seen anything like it before. It was no big thing???! People walking by, unphased by the bees...and the bees couldn't care less about the people. They were on a mission to chip away at the sugar coated pastries. My girlfriend told me that in the springtime, there are WAY more bees. So much that you can't actually see the those sugar coated pastries. What really blows my mind is the fact that people working behind the counter aren't even remotely moved by the bees. It's business as usual. We got our Berliners, and found our way to the next stop. We opened the bag and lo and behold, a bee came crawling out. As for the Berliner...this is where my 2 star rating comes in. It looked to me like a sugar coated jelly donut...which is my favorite kind of donut. When I bit into this visually appealing Berliner, I was so disappointed. It was a dry, somewhat tasteless, jelly filled bread thing. I'm not sure if that is what a Berliner is *supposed* to taste like, or if this is just a bad representation of a Berliner. Whatever the case may be, it seems to me that this could be WAY better. read more
