El Mercado del Claustro, or as it's spelled at the entrance, Claustre del Carme Mercat (Sa Plaça), is a conglomeration of 18th century mini food stores, with a modern supermarket on the ancient lower level area, located on a 17th century former Carmelite convent/Guardia Civil prison, connected physically to Mahon's Cathedral.
The largest market in the city, you can buy authentic fresh, Menorqui food items o the main level, including meats, vegs, fruits, pastries, fresh milk (really fresh and creamy!), daily made or cured cheeses, olives, etc,... everything grown in the island, better than anything organic.
The lower level houses a 21st century supermarket, offering items you would find at Tescos, Carrefour, or (ick!) Walmart, but with a much more fresh and tasty selection (again, most daily fresh items are from the island itself).
Some of the mini stalls on the first level also offer Minorcan(?) souvenirs, parking is provided on the second entrance of the Claustro (underground, connected to the modern supermarket).
Additionally, other food business are located on the entrance next to the Cathedral. Bakeries, bread shops, and a few feet down towards the long road towards the port, the very pungent Fish Market (Huge Shrimp!).
Museums and art schools are located on the second floor (did not have time to visit), art shows, theaters, and open air movie viewing are held on the large, inner patio, and a mirador ringing the Claustro offers beautiful views of the city and port.
Food, sights, history and souvenirs. A "must visit" spot for your vacation. =) read more
