One of the most beautiful performance venues in the RTP area. On the campus of UNC and always wonderful shows.

In a town known for its live music, it seems no surprise to me that UNC claims one of the best venues.

They will turn their noses up at you for asking simple questions like when their upstairs bar is supposed to open. And that's if you can get their attention. (they're not really a busy bar.) they are ignoring you. And they say they are a "restaurant" but the food is inconsistent. You never know what they have, if they have anything at all. Really a place for people who like to do nose powder *sniff*. Used to be a safe place for LGBTQ. It seems like they only open the kitchen for certain people. But show up when you search up food downtown... They keep it dark I guess to help hide with the sexual harassment happening on the dance floor. I watched their own karaoke host to be groped. And nobody did anything. Also had a friend drugged without consent here... Not only that sometimes they charge you after you leave make sure to take a picture of the receipt after you close your tab! They like to make random charges like Apple I've sent other friends there to try and have a good time and they have all told me that they're never going back to Durham after going there... Durham has good spots. This is just isn't one.

It wasn't very crowded when we went, which made it a great spot to grab a few drinks before dinner. My friend and I ordered the pear cocktail and it was fantastic. We liked it so much that we immediately ordered another round. The tacos they were serving were also really good and paired perfectly with the drinks. The bartender was great, the whole staff was A1, and the energy in the place was exactly what you want from a neighborhood bar. Loved it here and we're definitely making this a weekly stop.

I came back soon, as I got used to the weight and the distance, but we were mostly just using darts as something to do while chatting.

This is a cool spot for live djs and music. It's kind of hidden, dark, covered with stickers, art,…read moreand vintage stuff, the way I like it. I think it's for a younger, more underground-savvy crowd. If you just want basic top 40, go elsewhere. I saw some local hiphop acts perform live. I knew none of them, but it was a good time. Sound system and subwoofers are powerful, fyi. Plenty of bass. Full bar, but indie, so don't expect every brand of everything. It seems they close once the live performances are over, even if that is 12am rather than 2am. Understandable, as it's an event-focused space, not just a bar. The one thing I saw here that I've never seen before, is that many of the live hiphop acts were singing/rapping over music that already had singing/rapping in it. Idk if they were rapping over other people's tracks, and that's just a Thing People Do that I didn't know about, or if they were rapping over their own tracks. But I would just think that as a young local performer, you'd want to sing or rap over instrumental tracks so we can hear You and You alone.

And the atmosphere is very relaxed... reminds me of going to an unimaginably good old-school 'basement-show' where all the bands sound great, everyone else is cool, and the keg never runs dry. Sure, not every show will appeal to every taste (for example, I avoid their occasional D.J. dance party nights). My advice is to check their website or the Independent (which often selects shows at the Nightlight as one of their weekly 'picks') and read the description. If it sounds intriguing, make your way down the little alley next to Fuse restaurant and check it out. And if you like what you hear, buy the CD (bands need love).
