Not the Melvin's I grew up with. We went on the 11/06/17. I actually had to take my hamburger back because it was burnt. :( They were skimpy on the Chilli too. I always use to get Chilli, mustard and onions. They use to be excellent! Sad to report they were not excellent on Monday. They must be cooking them too high. Then they needed to clean the grill to get the excess off. Hamburgers didn't taste like they use too. The hotdog wasn't bad. They did overload on onions. The old Melvins had the right combination down pat! It seems they have lost their touch along the way, I'm sad to report this. Hopefully it was just a bad day.. Great location. Customer service is awful. Food is not as good as it use to be. Hot dogs are often under boiled, hamburgers are small, limited selection, and chili needs work. The coleslaw is good. I think there is a cumin or a cinnamon taste in the burgers. If you are in a hurry and don't mind a small burger with little taste on a wet bun, then this is your place. They are quick to serve but don't expect a smile. They cater to the regulars, appear not to be interested in the newbies/visitors and seem disgruntled. Absolutely not interested in service with an attitude. I understand the place has been around a long time and I believe that is why the higher reviews are submitted. I am all for longevity but the place is in need of help. I give them three stars for their speed, drink selection and location. I've been going to Melvin's for 40 years and this place is the Gold Standard for how a hamburger should taste...delicious!!! The only way to eat a Melvin's burger is with "chili, slaw & onions'...or just say All the Away! I've had burgers all over world and very few even come close to Melvin's! Living out on the west coast there's 4 things I miss the most from back home: Mello Yello, Boiled Peanuts, Carolina BBQ, and Melvin's Burgers. Sorry mom and dad, but you didn't make the cut. Since I was a little child it was a tradition that whenever we went to visit family in the area we stopped in for a couple of their burgers. Although the lines have always been long the staff are quick, and even in a line of 20 people you can expect to wait about 10 minutes. They're that fast at making your order. Needless to say, the combination of burger patty, cheese, chili, mustard, and coleslaw makes for an extremely delicious combination of which no one in Los Angeles seems capable of understanding this basic cooking art much less replicating it. They are proof that the best burgers come from simplicity, and that exotic burger ingredients like aioli and arugula should find a home in the dustbin of culinary history. So for those of you wondering what I've described above tastes like go ahead and make one yourself. For me, I'll wait until my next trip back to NC and make a quick detour to taste a bit of my childhood growing up in the Tar Heel State. read more

The line will usually be out the back door because this place is a real staple with the locals. It goes pretty quickly however, mainly due to the simple menu and assembly line method used. One of the best burgers I've ever had. Simple menu, cash only. They have one of those menus with the white plastic and the snap on letters. There's something about places that use those types of menus... Super busy but service was quick and the waitress on staff refilled our drinks and even helped me cut to the front of the line when we got seconds - since we were already seated. Not the best experience. At 2:30 PM, on a Saturday, the line was almost to the back door. Line goes quickly, however! Menu is simple, which obviously allows for quick service. However, with a simple menu it should NOT be hard to make simple requests like "hotdog all the way--slaw on the side." When trying to order quickly to not hold up the line, I was quickly snapped at by Gabby (the front cashier) that my request for slaw on the side was NOT an option for a "single hotdog order." Then, when I ordered a hamburger with just ketchup and mayo, I was quickly told that mayo was not an option. 1. I am upset with the sassy, unprofessional tone that was displayed by their worker, Gabby. 2. I was a first time customer, and now a LAST time customer with my overall experience. 3. I understand having a simple menu, but mayo is a staple and they could at least provide packets to go. 4. I don't know what the rave is all about...the hamburgers really have no flavor (and I should know since I just ate mine with only ketchup). 5. To make matters worse, we found a white colored object in the tip of our ketchup bottle. I wiped it out with a napkin and came to the conclusion that it (hopefully) was a raw piece of onion. It's never fun trying to "guess" what an unidentified object is when eating...especially when it looks like a white maggot. 6.I will comment on the hotdog which was delicious. Chili was great and didn't taste like it came out of a can. Everyone else I encountered was friendly and had great manners. It's sad that one bad apple truly can spoil the whole bunch! read more

No beach trip is complete without our stop to get about 15 Melvin's burgers (yes, 15 are necessary when the craving hits 3 hours later) for our family of 4. This is one of my favorite places to eat in Elizabethtown. They cook your burgers just as you like them, and they have a variety of condiments that can be put on the burger. They burn the edges just a bit, which makes the burger 10 times better. Their hotdogs are REALLY good and they also have a wide variety of condiments that can be put on them. They have AWESOME sweet tea, and they have a wide variety of chips, cookies, sweets, etc. that you can eat with your food. Prices are a bit high, but it is totally worth it. They open early so if you want a burger for breakfast, you could get one. They arent open on Sunday which is really good. I go to this place VERY often. read more

I went here as a small child when it was run by Pat Melvin and there were wooden booths. At that time there were pool tables in the back. Over the years we took our two daughters and now we take our grandchildren and tell them the stories of how it was years ago. The food has stayed great and fresh over the years. If you get there at lunch there will be 50 or more people in line, but the staff takes care of everyone at a rate of about 3 per minute, so your wait won't be that long. There is absolutely not enough room for me to rave on how much we love this place. The burger was the best I have ever eaten and my kids love the hot dogs! The Cole slaw and chili make the whole experience fantastic. The line was rediculously long when we got there but the staff is on point. We made the line, ordered and before we even paid...we had our food in hand! We found a seat and the staff on the floor was just as impressive.
