The food was amazing, the spicy tuna was so fresh and the spicy was still refreshing. The watermelon shot not pictured was my favorite and not too strong...but you only need one and the pineapple drink was tasty as well. It's a great place for lite bites or drinks before dinner. A couple of things to address or consider before coming to Melrose are: - Dress to impress, especially the men; don't dress like your a grown up version of a 14 year old. Wether the website says it or not you should have some rizz anytime you go out, full stop! Btw, bouncer has full rights to say yay or nay. - Valet cost isn't that big of an issue, but suggest dropping off your crew and finding a place to park. In and out for this location is tight and difficult with the people coming a going. - Your tab already has a 20% gratuity included when you receive your bill, so if you feel you need to add more, by all means. - Suggest getting here before 9 pm otherwise there likely will be a line to get in and no body likes to wait in line especially me. Anytime after 10 pm good luck in getting a drink at the bar, since it does get too crowded on Friday and Saturday nights. - If you have a larger group and have reservations that affords a higher level of convenience to time and location but no guarantees. - The place is relatively new and with escalation drinks are pricier than normal, but I was in San Fran for two plus years so nothing here shocks me regarding costs. Overall, I really enjoy this place, it does give off a Souther Cal / Miami vibe. Is sexy and swanky and find the crowd much more apt to look well heeled. Same ownership group Clarkwood. Music is good, but can get a little loud, suggest stepping out on the furnished patio. Started off with my husband being asked to remove his hat. I understand there is a dress code and we were on vacation in Houston so we're not familiar with this. The way that we were spoken to about it was a bit rude and made the night start off on a bit of a bad note. Let me say - this spot is BEAUTIFUL. It is just as aesthetic and well done as you see on social media. When I walked in, I immediately noticed the Le Labo Santal 33 fragrance and appreciated that. Those little details really make this an elevated experience. I was there Friday night around 8pm. Most furniture inside was moved away to allow guests to stand. The bar did not have bar stools so you just walked up and ordered. I was expecting the drinks to be a lot but not this much. We ordered 2 Red Bull Tito's vodkas and it was $58. This was the steepest price by far compared to other similar places in the area. They have a beautiful outside area that once again is clearly very well done. I immediately appreciated the Restoration Hardware furniture and high end details found throughout the restaurant. Outside seating at this time was a bit confusing as every couch and chair had a reserved plaque, yet everyone was just sitting down there and it was very unclear. I will say I would not recommend going for food or serious conversation in evening late Friday or Saturday as there is a very loud DJ and it is clearly a drink spot at that time of day. Overall I would recommend stopping by if you have guests from our or town, or want a more elevated Tulum feeling date spot. If you're looking for a pretentious waste of time with a hidden dress code and a staff that thinks they're judging NYFW instead of working at a bar in Houston, Melrose is the place for you. We showed up and there's a line--because apparently, you need a reservation to get in. The man at the door tells me to come forward, looks at my outfit, and says I'm good. Then he looks my boyfriend up and down (but won't look him in the eye) and just goes, "I don't know if that fit's gonna work." No explanation, no dress code listed anywhere. My boyfriend was wearing Sambas, dark blue jeans, a white shirt, and a black Arc'teryx jacket zipped up. The fit was not bad, but apparently, Melrose is operating on some secret, unspoken fashion rulebook. We left but came back because it was our friend's birthday, and he said he spoke to the manager to make an exception. My boyfriend even took off his $500 jacket just in case that was the problem. We return, and now there's a woman checking people in alongside the same man. We ask her about the exception, and she immediately goes, "Lemme see your fit. Put on the jacket. Yeah, that's not gonna work. You live nearby? You can change?" Mind you, still no explanation, just more up-and-down looks like she's casting for a fashion show. At that point, we left and went somewhere actually worth our time. And honestly? There are way better bars within walking distance. The Yelp reviews mention hidden fees, getting scammed on the valet, overpriced cocktails, and even charges for water. Can't say I'm surprised. Melrose is nothing more than a snobby, overhyped headache. Do yourself a favor--go somewhere else. Also melrose, if you're going to have a dress code that strict, post it EVERYWHERE. read more

Came here January 9th for dinner at 530 and we had an amazing experience. Our table ordered a few different things but the highlights of the meal were the Tenders, the Burger, and the Crispy tuna. The service at the restaurant was excellent and all the staff was so kind and accommodating. Imit honestly felt like every person who worked at the bar came to our table and checked on it, including the owner Dan who was so welcoming and kind. I always had fun coming here with my girl friends, for the dancing and everything. But not too long ago racism was served to one of the people in our group at the front entrance from another bald headed black man, he is told what to do and who to let in, my boyfriend wasn't let in because of what he was wearing, yet the bouncer let in 3 other men (caucasian) with the same type of clothing on including sneakers. This place has denied racial discrimination allegations in the past but cannot explain why they let certain groups pf people in despite how they are dressed. Pricy drinks! Ordered about 5 cocktails and it was about $150. Drinks were pretty standard, nothing special. It was really nice indoors decor wise. Very upscale and bougie. The music was not it. Straight up house, so just not the vibes. We sat outside for majority of the night and no one greeted us to take drinks until 2 hours into it. So, we went inside of the bar to order drinks which also took 20 minutes. It was a very cold evening and no one asked us if we wanted the heaters brought over. Just not very good hospitality. TLDR: cute ambiance, good cocktails, they charge $$ for small water bottles and don't disclose that it's crazy expensive (regular tap is not an option apparently lol) I was so excited to try this new spot for in Montrose, but unfortunately was overall not impressed. The interior was gorgeous! I couldn't even recognize La Grange that used to exist in this space before. The drinks: overall tasted great! we got the gin and tonic, southside (kind of like a mojito but with gin), and the champagne caviar drink. The caviar is not real and is instead made with balsamic vinegar. Even tho it was fake caviar, the still skimped on it, and it added no flavor or texture to the drink. I would skip on this drink - it just tasted like champagne and was nothing special. The happy hour price is great at $10/cocktail until 6:30 pm. Downsides: Our server asked us if we wanted sparkling or "regular" water. We said regular and she brought us water bottles. It was $21, which was actually ridiculous. The water was almost as expensive as the drinks. Overall, while the place has a nice ambiance, i don't think it adds anything new to the Houston cocktail lounge scene. It doesn't fit the ~vibes~ of montrose, and there are better spots nearby! (see: refuge, anvil, etc). I don't see myself ever coming back, but glad I gave them a try regardless. I genuinely don't understand the hype around this place. Melrose markets itself as an upscale cocktail bar, but the actual experience feels more like a pretentious cash grab with very little to back it up. Right from the door, the vibe is off. The staff comes across as cold and dismissive, and the door policy feels arbitrary at best. There's no clear explanation of expectations, just an attitude that makes you feel like you're being judged before you even step inside. First impressions matter, and this one immediately made us feel unwelcome. Once inside, the disappointment continues. The cocktails are severely overpriced for what you get. Presentation might look decent, but the drinks themselves are underwhelming -- overly complicated flavor profiles that don't actually taste good, tiny pours, and way too much emphasis on "luxury" ice and add-ons that quietly inflate the bill. Paying premium prices should at least guarantee quality, and that's simply not the case here. Service is slow and inattentive. Getting a bartender's attention takes far too long, and when you finally do, you're rushed through the interaction as if ordering a drink is an inconvenience. There's no warmth, no hospitality, and no effort to make guests feel comfortable or valued. The atmosphere also doesn't live up to expectations. It looks nice in photos, but in reality it's overly dark, crowded, and loud to the point where conversation is difficult. I visited Melrose on a Saturday night wearing leather pants, a black knit short-sleeve polo, and black-and-white Chanel sneakers. I only mention the brand because I want to be clear -- these weren't workout shoes or Yeezys. Chanel sneakers are elevated, intentional, and very much in line with a polished look. At the door, the doorman (who was Black and respectful) checked my ID and told me he couldn't let me in because I had on sneakers, and that "if the staff inside see me, they'll trip." (Meaning they'd make a big deal about it.) I stepped aside -- I didn't argue or cause a scene, because honestly, once I saw a doorman, I half-expected something. But then the man behind me, who happened to be white, was wearing all-white sneakers. He was told the same thing at first, but he pushed back -- lifted his pant leg, explained his shoes, and after some back and forth, he was allowed in. Once the doorman realized it would look questionable to let him in and not me, he turned to me and said I could go in too. Inside, I noticed multiple men wearing sneakers -- none of whom were Black. I didn't see other Black guests being turned away, and there were Black men inside, but none were wearing sneakers. I'm totally fine with venues having a dress code -- but if you're going to enforce one, it needs to apply to EVERYONE. Selective enforcement isn't just unprofessional -- it's a bad look. Train your door staff to vet people properly and apply policies fairly. After reading other reviews, I now see I'm not the only one who's experienced this kind of inconsistency at the door -- especially as a Black guest. That speaks volumes. I'm not sure what changed since they opened, but they're working very hard to keep a certain demographic out of their establishment. Certain men are not allowed entry if they're wearing anything other than a button down, but others are allowed to come in wearing plain shirts and whatever else they feel like. We watched them turn down so many men of color at the door for certain clothing but we saw whte men with the same dress inside. We weren't allowed to take pictures but others were. A waitress was very nasty to my friend after she brought out the wrong drink. Practically snatched it out of her hand and rolled her eyes, returned with a condescending tone. I love the ambiance of the restaurant. It's perfect for cocktails and conversation. The music isn't too loud so you have to yell over it to talk. Reservations have a minimum spend which is easily doable but we didn't have definite plans so skipped the reservations this time but we may make reservations for better seats (inside seems completely reservation only) next go. We were able to find seating both times we came on the beautiful patio. Once was just us 2, and the next time it was a party of 6. We'll visit again soon for sure. read more

My friends and I, a group of beautiful stylish Black women, were so excited to celebrate a birthday at Melrose. We'd seen it all over TikTok and Instagram and couldn't wait to experience it for ourselves. Unfortunately, we never even made it inside. When we arrived, the bouncer asked if we had a reservation. We didn't see anything online saying one was required but we respected it and started to leave. Just moments later, we saw two white men without a reservation get let in with no questions asked. It was confusing, disappointing, and honestly hurtful. We showed up looking great, excited, and ready to enjoy ourselves, but we were made to feel like we didn't belong. As Black women, it's disheartening to still encounter this kind of treatment in spaces that claim to be for everyone. I truly hope Melrose takes this as an opportunity to reflect and do better. The atmosphere and branding are beautiful but what matters most is how people are treated once they arrive. We wanted to love it but the experience left us feeling unseen and unwelcome. read more
