Went there for the first time to meet friends on New Year's Day. 1. Overpriced menu -Spent 4 dollars to get a regular tea bag with hot water in a mug 2. Service - paid my tip and said Happy New Year to the bearded staff -no eye contact, no smile but a long face. 3. Environment -dark (not cozy, felt not hygienic), hard uncomfortable chairs. It's a run down place with outdated facilities -there's no separate area for kitchen, all food prep done behind the counter (no kitchen fan). the strong cooing smell was all over the place that made the air hard to breathe. My hair, clothing were covered with strong oily smell. I had to do laundry and shower thoroughly after I got home to get rid of the fried food smell. Obviously my friends picked the wrong place to meet. I will never go there again. read more

This lovely location is a real neighbourhood coffee house with lots of coffee and tea options. I had a latte both times we were there on a visit to Vancouver and the breakfast wrap was substantial and did not stint on the bacon, cheesy and eggy and crispy outside. This place is a staple in the community. It has been here for years and is seen as a much beloved meeting place for friends and family alike. The staff are lovely, kind, and very considerate. The owner, Julie, is also a very warm person. As a coffee snob, I can say definitively that this is the best coffee on Davie St. The food is surprisingly good, I say surprisingly because it never fails to astonish myself and those around me, the calibre and quality that they managed to turn out in such a small kitchen. for context, I'm here 3 days a week, every week, for the last 3 years. They have recently received some bad PR, Due to one mentally unbalanced trans woman who decided to show up and act like a fool, She has since sent her friends to leave bad reviews which is completely Slanderous and false This Coffee shop is and always well is and always was a safe place for any is for any person of any gender reason of any gender presentation or sexual orientation We actually filmed the movie here during pandemic for free about trans lives.... I had never heard of this place before visiting and didn't have super high expectations from looking at the outside - I basically only gave it a chance because it was the only coffee shop I could find on Davie with outdoor seating. Thankfully, my doubts were totally unfounded! This place is friendly and cozy, and the food is wonderful! The food selection isn't huge but they have a good variety of sweet and savoury options. Although they were very busy I still felt the staff was attentive and patient. I tried the spinach and feta quiche, lavender almond coffee cake, and (seasonal) eggnog latte. The quiche had a pleasant texture. It came with a slice of tomato and spoon of hot sauce which was interesting. It was nice and hot when they served it and it had a fresh taste. The cake slice was huge and decadent - it was drizzled with a caramel syrup and sprinkled with powdered sugar in addition to being topped with a thick coating of frosting. The cake itself wasn't too sweet though so things balanced out. I loved the strong lavender flavour. Eggnog latte was nice - the eggnog flavour was mild but definitely present and the coffee itself (or maybe just because of the pairing) had a very smooth taste. read more

I heard great things about Melriches from a friend, but my expectations may have been too high. First thing I noticed was how dark it was inside. My iced coffee was pretty weak. I had intended to go for run after getting this coffee fix, but it did nothing for me. Definitely did NOT pick me up. It also came with the incorrect lid, the dome shaped ones for whip cream and toppings I think. It was busy and I noticed that it was an older crowd. The have both indoor and outdoor seating, but not a whole lot. I imagine this could be a great quiet place to get some work done. read more

Every once in a while, someone suggests meeting at Melriches. And while it's in my neighbourhood, it's never top of mind for a meeting or for a coffee, although I have spent my fair share of time here over the last 5+ years. I don't know quite how to describe this, but on a wet day, you'll feel the humidity. For a moment it feels warm, cozy and inviting, until the claustrophobia kicks in and permeates you in an all over coffee grounds stench. For me, there's nothing really standout about this shop. Depending on the day, a barista can be pleasant or downright rude, the americano's are ok (I do like that they ask you if you'd like 1 shot or 2 and give you the water to add yourself). The food is ho-hum. The tables are eclectic and some are squished together, allowing you to nuzzle up against your neighbour. The noise level is above average which sometimes makes having a quiet conversation tough. Free wi-fi is available in the evening, but not during the day, deterring any plug hogs from hanging out for too long, which is okay, because seriously, after 5 minutes of a wet day, you're guaranteed to walk around for the rest of the day smelling like coffee from head to toe. read more

I came here tonight with a friend to catch up. A great homey place to enjoy a hot beverage with friends or a book. It is the café equivalent of a bar with peanut shells all over the floor. The beverage menu is extensive with all kinds of coffees, teas and cocoas. My 16 oz London Fog was perfect in this wet stormy weather. read more

I really wanted to like this place. The decor is funky and the people who work there seem nice, but the two times I have visited have been disappointing. The first time, I got a medium roast coffee and it tasted weak and kind of old. The second time, they said they could make me a vegan sandwich but gave me spinach and tomato on toast for $8. They weren't used to accommodating Vegans so I appreciated the effort but they should not have tried to get away with that. At least they refunded my money when I expressed my disappointment, but then I went to use the bathroom and the toilet seat was covered in dried urine - just after they had opened in the morning - so who knows how often they clean in there. I hope they get their act together, but I probably won't be going back. read more

I love the quiches here. My most recent one was the spinach feta quiche and it is yummy. They give you a side of hot sauce served in a Chinese soup spoon. Very cool . And The coffee is served from Bean Around the World . So everything is good here. I get my coffee buzz and my tummy is full. Melriches is like one of those movies that gets so much hype that when you actually experience it for yourself, you can't help but feel let down. Practically every review in the Straight or any other local paper raves about Melriches; but the reality? Nice coffee, rude patrons and servers with attitudes. You have to understand that I'm a pretty easy going person; I wait my turn in line; I'm patient and wait to be served, but I know what I want and don't waste time humming and hawing about what to order. However, I do expect a certain level of courtesy and service in return, and I, like many, get PO'ed with people who waste time in line. With that in mind, my first (and last) experience went something like this: I walked into the coffee shop and was immediately unsure as to where to go to order. There were a few people congregating around the till, so I got in line behind them. Pretty quickly I figured out that I wasn't going to get any service because the counter staff didn't even look at me when I got to the counter. I figured they were just busy; however, another customer bypassed me and went straight to the till and got served. WTF? I noticed another line at back of the store, so I went there and waited behind 5 other people, and eventually got to place my order -- a no-frills latte. The drink was nice -- the milk was steamed to perfection: smooth and light -- and the espresso was flavourful. And honestly I've been tempted to go back for another. But a nice coffee is not worth the pretentiousness and lack of manners that you will face at Melriches. And forget about finding a seat to chill and enjoy your cafe of choice. read more

In the land of Starbucks, Blenz, and other coffee chains, this small, independently owned coffee shop with an eclectic neighbouhood vibe is refreshing. There's a rotating selection of local art on the walls, and the music playing always surprises me. This is a spot where you're likely to see students studying (with many breaks for facebook), artists having a mini-production meeting, neighbourhood locals meeting for a beer, and folks meeting for a first coffee date. I, for one, both met and proposed to my spouse here. The medium drip is rich and flavourful. There's soy milk on the bar next to the milk and cream - no asking required. They have a surprising selection of loose-leaf teas. If you ask nice, the barista will pop your tea of choice loose in a teapot and give it to you with a strainer. This place is licensed, if you'd rather have a different sort of libation. Pair your bevvy with a ginger crinkle cookie, strawberry rhubarb crumble (made fresh in house), or a hot buttered cheese scone. Hunker down and settle in for an afternoon of reading, cruising the internet on your laptop, and gazing out the window and people watching. read more

I feel so out of step with my peers. I am having good experiences at badly rated places! Alright, so my girly girl and I went cycling after getting scads of books from the library. We were determined NOT TO GO TO STARBUCKS. I actually do like Starbucks, but really did not want to resort to them, or Blenz or Waves. I just needed a change of pace. From the library on Georgia, we biked around and passed 12 Starbucks, all open. No other coffee shops till Davie. Booze cans aplenty, just no comfy place to read. We got there and it was quiet. We ordered two iced mochas and they came a bit slowly, but they were letter perfect. We then had a great conversation with a regular about how some scammer stole his Iphone (replete with an elaborate distraction of spilling cream on him, etc! Just like the movies!) I know it's luck of the draw sometimes, we just had a great iced mocha that made braving Davie Street traffic on our bikes not so bad. Plus, we got to watch ridiculous looking little fraggle-like dogs being walked up and down the street. My kind of fun! read more

Went here tonight with a gentlemen friend in attempts of avoiding the chain coffee places flooding Davie, but probably should've just skipped it and went to Starbucks. Our order was simple - 2 coffees with soy milk - and it somehow turned into a big ordeal. First they were out of soy... Then they wound up overcharging us thinking we wanted lattes instead of regular old coffee... Then we realize there was actually soy milk sitting there all along (but only after we'd sat and waited for the barista to run across the street to grab some more.) On top of all that, the guy working had no clue about any of the food. My friend has serious dietary restrictions and the guy was pretty clueless about what was vegan or not. I'm giving two stars because apparently the veggie samosa was quite good, plus we got a cool toy tiger to put on the table instead of the typical number when ordering food. I'll probably give it one more shot before giving up, but definitely a bit of a let down! read more

Have been going to this place since it opened back in 1993. Always been a fan, but the time has come for a few upgrades and changes: 1) Proper ventilation is needed. I can never sit in there for too long as it fills up with smoke from the food prep. You always see the staff propping open the back door to air the place out. 2) Tables and chairs are far too large and bulky and it's difficult to move around. 3) It's starting to get real tattered and dirty. Time for a real big clean up and paint job. Always loved the coffee, food, music, atmosphere and clientele. In this era of nothing but chain coffee shops, it's nice to see an independent business thrive on a street where the rents are so high, only giant companies with deep pockets can survive. Just spruce the place up a bit and it'll continue to be a neighbourhood favourite. read more

When i used to live in the area i used to eat here once a week. I got hooked on there veggie breakfast sandwichs which are served with a spoonful of hot sauce. They actually got me addicted to hot sauce again. Since i moved away from the Westend (sadly) i still come here on average once or twice a month. I feel like it's a treat. I read the paper, enjoy my americano and eat up sandwich. Most people feel like this place is OK but i happen to love it. There was a awhile there when i got annoyed by the average clientele speaking loudly about there dislike of heterosexual people, but i learned to ignore those people and they slowly dissapeared. Good back ups for food here are Cinnamon buns, ginger snap cookies, bagel & lox, and the Swiss breakfast. read more

This is a diamond in the rough! I live very near to this coffee house and I'm glad I do. Unfortunately so much business is lost to the Blenz across the street and to the 2 Starbucks within a block of Melriches. I've been here too many times to count, each a pleasant experience. Great coffee, great atmosphere, and lovely staff. I've had wonderful conversations with many other coffee goers and am always excited to try something new from their menu. They serve the standard lattes, espresso, and coffees; but what makes Melriches so great is the home made baked goods that are always fresh and delicious. Just last night I had a bowl of their Strawberry Rhubarb Crumble. I was on the floor! It was delicious. Melriches is exactly what the West End needs more of. Homey and comforting social gathering spots. I love this place. Oh and the biscotti is AMAZING! read more

I like the avocado toast as well as the bagel here and the coffee here is always amazing.

This is a very decent neighbourhood coffee shop. They have heavy wooden tables and chairs, not the wobbly IKEA furniture you find in most places. My 16oz hot chocolate cost $3.30 incl tax, and it was excellent (the same thing at Caffe Artigiano cost me $4 just a few days ago). The music wasn't too loud, and the staff knew many of the customers by name. The woman in line behind me was yakking on her cell phone the whole time I was trying to order. When she got to the cash, the cashier told her there was a "no phones while in line" rule -- and then pointed to a sign to this effect. I think it's interesting that we live in an age where good manners have to be legislated. The woman didn't seem to care, though, which is exactly what I expected, but at least they try. read more

Not even worth 0 stars. Ordered a soy matcha latte- it was bland and tasted entirely like soy. I actually prefer bland drinks but this was like nothing I've ever had before; no matcha flavour, no sugar, and worst of all it was lukewarm- gross! The cashier did not tell me there is a $0.25 charge for paying by debit, but once I tried to tell him I change my mind and want to pay by cash, he had wandered off to chat with some customer. Wtf? How is this place still in business? Looks like unless you are a regular, they don't give a sht about 'customer service'. Not to mention the drinks and food are not even worth remembering. Melriches is a mish mash of delicious and 'fair' food, friendly and unfriendly staff and a strange blend of people. The ambiance? Meh. I've never actually taken the time to sit there and enjoy my coffee. I'm more of a 'to-go' kinda gal. So what's with the 4 stars then? I've always been a sucker for a good soy chai latte and a yummy breakfast sandwich (breakfast croissant, in my case). You know that saying, 'the way to a man's heart is through his stomach'? Yeah, well, that also applies to this gal right here ;D read more
