*****Hands down BEST Mexican in the Sutherland Shire!*****…read more The Big Mexican Rancho is the sister restaurant to the late and great restaurant Fiesta Mexicana, which was situated in Carlton and was our favourite Mexican restaurant in Sydney! As a result of Fiesta Mexicana closing down we did the next best thing and started going to The Big Mexican Rancho in Gymea Bay! The Big Mexican Rancho is a family business, owned and operated by Javier and Nelcy Rojas and has existed in its current location for over 20 years. We came here as a family quite a few times growing up but always preferred the food at Fiesta Mexicana. Transitioning back to The Big Mexican Rancho was however, super easy as I have a sneaky suspicion that some of the cooks from Fiesta Mexicana are now working here because the food is PHENOMENAL! Hot Tips- Some Favourite Menu Options: *Stuffed Jalapeños *Chorizo Sausage *Chilli Con Carne *Deluxe Nachos *ABOVE ALL: You must try their dips!! I always get 3 in 1: Salsa Chilli Con Queso Bean Drinks: *The restaurant is BYO, however if you ask they do make a mean Sangria! Atmosphere: *Always warm and friendly *If you are lucky on your birthday you may even be able to wear a Sombrero! *Bring some coloured pencils and take over the paper table cloth with your wicked drawings and Noughts & Crosses! Book ahead: *It gets super busy on Saturday so a booking is a must!

So much so that we were seated at a table right near the front door almost on top of another table of 4. The waitresses were mainly teenage girls. As you can imagine the service was not the best. However, the food was good. The portion sizes were very filling. My husband and I ordered the 3 in 1 dip, small nachos and each had the enchilada and taco as the main. We didn't finish any of them, that's how big they were. The 3 dips were definitely too much for two people. Better suited for a table of 4 or more. All alcohol is BYO. Drinks are served in Mason jars which was cool. Typical Mexican restaurant decor. Pretty loud and a lot of families with young children. Didn't try dessert as we were stuffed. Would definitely go back as this place has the most authentic Mexican food we have tried in the shire.

Went there with family for bday dinner on Sunday evening…read more We booked a table for 8 people. The place was already buzzing with some nice spanish music. We have order our drinks first - Mojitos, Margaritas and some mexican beers. My Mojito was really nice and strong. We order our food- Super burritos- (they are extremely big and when you finish them they will give you a beer or shot of your choice). So few of the boys order that and also we had some nachos and fajitas too. The food was very nice and tasty but not really cheap.Mains from $20-$30 and cocktails around $15. Also on Sundays they had a deal $15 for unlimited tacos. That's a peaty good deal. I like the atmosphere in the place and all decorations on the wall. It did had a mexican feeling and will be back there for sure.

El Sol just lost customers. Forever…read more I have been here quite a few times already as it usually has a good vibe with cheap food. Booked for 12 people on a Friday night and arrived on time. My friend went to the bar to order a bottle of wine but was told they were completely out of full bottles so she could only order by the glass (we spotted that she was being poured goon). Everyone ordered drinks (including a couple of $30 Sangria jugs), 3 mains and a couple of chips & dips plates to share. After ordering, the manager told us that next time we come to the restaurant everyone would need to order a main each or would be charged $10 pp as it was a busy night and her boss would be "pissed off" knowing we booked the biggest table and were not all eating mains. After that rude comment we ate and drank and left as soon as we could. I will also mention that after the managers comment all of the staff were rude and inattentive. I will not be returning. That's no way to treat customers who easily spent over $200 in the first 10 minutes.

With all the prohibition era styled pubs popping up around the city, The Blind Bear was long…read moreoverdue in the Shire. I love how this place does drinks - there's four taps of rotating craft beer/cider, and once they're out they tap a new flavour. They ran out of 2 beers while we were there, and a new keg was quickly tapped each time. They have cardboard signs serving as labels - an easy way to keep the signage current - and at $8-9/pint, its a great way to try different beers without damaging your wallet. For wine they only offer 1 red and 1 white each night, and those change daily. The cocktails are made with care, with a good selection of classics (martini, Manhattan) and some fruity modern conceptions as well. Food was quite good, despite some of the portions being small. The cheesesteak for $16 could easily be consumed in a few bites. The pulled pork for $16 was delicious, served between two toasted pieces of delicious bread (not the "hoagie" I was expecting, but some of the best pulled pork I've had in Australia), and a better serve than the cheesesteak. The sliders were, again, on the small side. At $4/each or 4 for $15, you'd need 4 to make a meal. I found the chicken sliders a bit bland, possibly being overpowered by the potatoes in the garlic mash. The beef sliders were much better, with a delicious pickle relish. Of course, I had to grab the wings (6 for $9 or 12 for $16) which were one of the standouts for the night. A bit sweet at first, they pack a bit of a punch with a heat that builds. The three chip options (chilli cheese fries, sweet potato wedges, and steak fries with chipotle mayo) were all pretty good. Rumour (or rather, Facebook) has it that this place does $0.50 wings and $5 hot dogs on Wednesdays - definitely worth checking out. Come early if you want a table - we managed to grab one of the last of them at 6 pm on a Saturday, and didn't see much turnover during our 3 hour stay.
