The Mechanics Institute is a local performing arts space in the Brunswick neighborhood. The theatre seats about 100 and there is ample stage space considering the seating size of the venue. Although the stage runs quite deep so using the whole space in a traditional arrangement would put some performers at quite a distance from the audience. When I attended the production made use of screen projections against the back wall in addition to more traditional set pieces further downstage.
Basic beer, wine, and chips concessions were available in the lobby for those in need of a beverage during intermission. Though there's zero atmosphere in this audience waiting area. So if you're looking to spend more time getting a pre or post-show drink, head to one of the nearby bars instead. The lobby AC was kicking, making it rather chilly on a warm Melbourne evening. Despite that, I'd still recommend planning for the weather as I suspect it's harder to control the temperature in the large theatre space during more extreme weather conditions.
Different shows are programed throughout the year based on expression of interest. So locals can attend a variety of productions and special events put on by different companies. This is a nice institute for residents in the area and a decent venue for performing artists. read more
