Kim went above and beyond to help me get my bike back--she even chased the thieves down with me! Although I wasn't able to retrieve my bike, it was amazing to have someone be so helpful and comforting during such a stressful situation. I had just moved here from Houston, so having someone show that much kindness really meant a lot to me. With that being said, the bookstore itself is also fantastic! I mainly enjoy fiction and classic literature, and they had a great selection at very reasonable prices. I definitely recommend checking it out! Also, just to clarify, the area itself does not feel dangerous. Bike theft is unfortunately fairly common, so just be mindful and make sure to secure your bike properly (or take transit) if you're visiting.

We came here to look for a old cooking or baking recipe book. We didn't find what we want but we did find something interesting. A big book for $10. I can't argue on their prices. Their prices are way better than the big bookstores (ie. Indigo) but again they don't have a big selection as Indigo and that is because of space. Rent is not cheap in the Greater Vancouver. They do sell used and new books here. Service was ok. There was two ladies working when we came here. One at the cashier area and one reorganizing and putting books on shelves. If you have a question, she will provide an answer.

I pass by Canterbury Tales on a regular basis, and since I love reading, I stop in every so often…read moreto take a look. I don't always buy something, but I enjoy looking, and I have made several purchases over the past six months. However, the owner is such a rude woman, and after the other day, I will never go back. Whenever I go in, the owner always eyes me with suspicion, which makes it uncomfortable to just browse. And once, she accused me of stealing when I was holding a library book! She was incredibly rude about it (and extremely embarrassed when I showed her it was a library book), and while I was tempted to never set foot in her store again, I understand that mistakes happen, although the way she confronted me was unnecessarily rude and aggressive -- she definitely could have confronted me with much more grace that would have saved face, and it was also pretty obvious I had a library book. Anyway, despite being accused of stealing (after I had previously purchased books several times), I still continued to go back. The second incident occurred on a rainy day. Before entering the small store, I had closed my umbrella, and while standing just inside the entrance, I was placing it inside my bag, so as not to get water droplets all over the merchandise, and the owner barks at me to place my umbrella in the umbrella stand. I understand not wanting people to come in with wet umbrellas, but chill the fuck out! I was actively placing my umbrella in my bag, so no need to yell at me to place it in an umbrella stand (where it would either be stolen, or forgotten). The last incident was the other day. I had a knapsack (so of course she was eyeing me with her usual suspicion) and after looking around for several minutes, she aggressively snaps at me to be careful not to knock over any of the shelves, something I have never ever done, because I am always extremely careful. Not only was her "warning" unneccesary, but her tone was so rude. I responded "You are always so rude to me, I will never shop here again" and walked out. Canterbury Tales is one small business I will not be supporting, solely due to the owner's rude and aggressive attitude. Also, their Stephen King selection SUCKS. I'll just go to MacLeod's Books instead. [Yelp collections: Libraries and Bookstores; Rude!]
