I recently moved to Utah, and needed a new place for oil changes, etc. I had a coupon, and so went here. I presented my coupon when I arrived, and they still tried to charge me full price, and seemed annoyed when I corrected them. I saw 3 different guys while there, and they were dismissive and just didn't seem to like me for some reason. I'm a Sr. Citizen, so while I watched them laugh and flirt with younger women, I wondered if that was why they didn't feel the need to be friendly to me. Ah, well. PLEASE DO NOT go to this place.... I dropped by because of the few decent reviews I read here on yelp but God THAT WAS A HUGE MISTAKE. I am a young student (girl) and this is my STORY PLEASE READ.... My brakes had been acting funny so I decided to stop by and get them checked. The man told me I needed to get front new brake pads. Fair enough but when I looked up online how much the parts were themselves it should have been $80-$100 for both parts.... + $209 for labor?! The guy said total would be $309 for everything.... being the not so smart person and call around to ask others how much it would be I got desperate and said okay to the $309. After waiting almost 4 HOURS the guys comes back and says "your rear breaks also need changing and the whole break drum needs to be replaced and it will be $300 more..." I was in shock and upset at why he didn't tell me this at first when he told me about the front 2 parts. I declined because I didn't have he money and just told him to fix the front. A week later my back breaks start acting funny so I decided to give them a call to ask how much it would be to get them fixed and he tells me on the phone "it will be around $375...." I was in shock and called him out saying " You quoted me $300 last week?" And he says "ohhh I guess I can bring it down to $309". After that I KNEW I WAS DEALING WITH A LIAR WHO IS OUT TO RIP PEOPLE OFF. DO NOT TRUST THIS PLACE THEY ARE OUT TO GET YOU. IT MAKES ME SO SAD TO SEE THIS..... they are taking advantage of people. I DID NOT GO BACK AND THATS not even the worst part of the story.... I called another reliable company (referred to me by classmate) down the street and the mechanic goes "You don't need the whole drum fixed you just need new rear pads and everything total will cost $125" I was in TOTAL DISBELIEF and ANGRY with McNeil that I HAD TO WRITE THIS REVIEW so others don't get ripped off like I did!!!!!! PLEASE do not go here even if you are desperate. They are unethical and do not give a crap about anything . I brought my van to get an emissions test done. The staff was very nice, it took only about 45 minutes and I had a coupon so the price was right. They had a great play area for my son to keep him occupied while we waited and offered complimentary beverages as well as a decent waiting area. read more

I called AAA because my battery was dead. McNeil's Auto Care showed up at my house within minutes. The timing was perfect. The tech, TJ arrived and told me that he was right around the corner finishing up with another costumer. TJ was extremely kind and friendly. He explained all of my options and I elected to buy a battery from him. The battery has a six year warranty. That is the best you are going to get. He was able to fix my battery issue immediately and he was really nice. I would recommend that you use McNeil's Auto Care for all of your auto repair needs, not just AAA. Thanks again TJ! read more

I would not recommend this place to anyone! Called in to Mcneils to figure out my car trouble they explained it could take up to 3 hours to figure out the issue. They ended up keeping it for 6 hours including overnight, charged me $150 for the analysis and told me they needed more time. They basically put it off... So I brought it over to the Chevy dealership and they found the issue in 30 minutes. McNeils tried to take advantage of me and they will do the same to you! read more

I brought my old very well worn car in for a second time in 6 weeks at my wit's end. Troy (I hope that's his name) took the time to listen to what I was dealing with overall and my goal for the car (to get it running with as minimal cost as possible), and was empathetic and understanding and did his best, including re-doing a part under warranty just in case, for no charge. No one is ever happy when thy have to pay to fix a car, and I'm sure these guys deal with frustrated people everyday, I think they are honest and do their best to make the customer happy. I am giving 4 stars only because I really think the tow service should be better coordinated, my service tech was pretty annoyed when I told him something the driver had done trying to help but could have done more damage. read more

We were loyal customers because of the great advice from a service consultant on a repair we had a few months ago. I learned with that experience why the employees are called Service Consultants- he told me in detail what was wrong and what my options were in a way that was helpful and not condescending. Recently, they surpassed my expectations. We took in our Civic hybrid for a costly repair. I already knew I could trust them to take care of my car and not overcharge me. Troy did a lot of research to figure out what was wrong and kept me informed along the way. He spent a few days trying to track down the part we needed, and in the end advised me to go to the dealership as he just could not match the price the dealership would be able to give me. I wanted to give McNiels the business, but they were willing to send me somewhere else to save me money. We will never take our vehicles anywhere else, unless we have to. I have a 1997 Ford Thunderbird, and I came here to get my car repaired because (long story short) it was having issues running properly. I went to two places previously and they had no idea where to start. Firstly, their towing hotline is a joke. My first question when calling was "Is this the towing hotline for Mcneils?" and she responded "I don't understand. We are Mcneils. We do the towing for Mcneils." Why was it so hard to just say yes? There was a lot of this back and forth and misunderstanding where there should've been no confusion. I paid $1300 here to have my fuel pump, ignition coil, and PCM replaced (they recommended a brake flush as well which I agreed to). I got the car back after the repairs took a couple weeks. The next day, it wouldn't start, my whole exhaust system was hanging low, and there was a terrible knocking noise. These were all new issues. I had my car towed back. They said I needed a new crank shaft sensor for the starting issue and needed a ball joint and strut bushing replaced for the noise. Both of which I had to pay for. I didn't understand this since these were new issues I'd never seen before. I paid anyways which was an extra $400. I got my car back after this and the next day it wouldn't start again. I had my car towed back. This time, they reflashed the PCM. No charge. They added in an alignment for free. My car is running now, but there have been times where it still won't start. Also, every time I go over bumps now, I hear this terrible banging. Not worth going back again to go through another headache. This whole process took from mid-July to Halloween. My car isn't worth a lot to begin with so if I had known it would be $1700 total, I probably would've gotten a new car instead. I let McNeils know from the beginning that I had no idea what needed to be fixed and that I needed a full quote before anything was done. read more

Honestly, I can't say enough good things about McNeil's. I've been with them for years and they've serviced many of my vehicles. As a woman, I've often been pressured to purchase things I don't need from auto shops. McNeil's has always been straight up with me, explaining which things they would recommend, but which of those I can probably get away with not doing yet, and for how long. They always work with me to save cost, and if they know I can get something done cheaper elsewhere, they'll tell me. They topped off my power steering fluid this morning for free, with a smile, and I was in and out in five minutes. First time using McNeil's. I towed my truck there when it overheated from what I suspected was a frozen/cracked radiator. I actually was planning on taking it somewhere else, but the AAA tow truck operator (from McNeil's) subtly highlighted that I would get a AAA discount on the service and a free loaner car. Since I was planning on renting a car, I saw both points as an opportunity to save money on what I anticipated being a $500 repair. They determined that it was low on coolant, topped it off, did a pressure test and found that it was losing pressure. They isolated the problem to a loose hose clamp. Having mentally prepared to spend $500 and finding out that it will probably cost less than $100, I am delighted. I will come back the next time any of my family's 4 cars need service and I will definitely bring their loaner car back with a full tank of gas! read more

I had my brakes replaced at a brake shop a few weeks ago and since then things with my car didn't seem right. I brought it to McNeil's Auto Care after getting a recommendation from my friend. They took me in immediately, drove my car to find the noise, did a quick little switch with my tires to fix it, and didn't charge me a cent!!!! Then about a half hour later they called me to see if my car was sounding ok! I am just floored by the kindness and great service there. We won't ever go anywhere else. Also they had a perfect little playroom for the kids while we waited. It was clean and full of toys for my kids to play with. They weren't bored or whiny the whole time. One word that can be used to describe McNeil's: Caring. I haven't been to any other mechanic that has been more concerned with the state of my car than this place. Troy was very helpful with getting my car diagnosed, as well as filling me in on the details of how my car was doing. After taking my car in the full diagnosis brought back more results than I thought. I have many more repairs to be done, but when I do, i'll be taking my car to McNeil's. I thought i needed new brake pads and possibly a new rotor due to a screeching sound that sounded like the sensors. After McNeil's looked at it, turned out all i had was a rock stuck in-between the pads and rotor. They took the rock out and let me know that my pads were in great shape. They could've taken advantage of the fact that I was pretty sure that it was the sensor making the horrific noise and just changed out my pads. I went to McNeil's Auto Care for a regular oil change. Its a tad bit expensive than your run in the mill place but the service and timing is great. The minute I walked in, I was greeted by the staff. Even though I was late by 40 mins to my oil change appt and they were about to close in 20, they still took me in. They use premium oil (hence the higher fee for the oil change) and they also conduct a multipoint inspection. They found out a few things about the car which I will probably get fixed on the next time in. I was in and out of there within 20 minutes, the fastest oil change I have had since I have been in Utah. read more

While traveling through Sandy a few weeks ago on business I was experiencing car trouble with my rental. Unfamiliar with the area I was beginning to panic so I stopped into this auto repair shop to ask them to run a diagnostics and this guy by the name of Christopher Bowles was so utterly rude to me. I was so shocked and stunned that a total stranger would be this rude. He said that he couldn't do and that I should go elsewhere. I explained to him that I wasn't familiar with the area and that most shops close around 6pm. It was a little after 4pm. Being frustrated I left and called the rental car company and they assisted me from there but before I left I saw how engaged he was with a customer of his own race and his attitude was vastly different. Anyway a few weeks later I see this message on a message board and realize this is the same guy that was rude to me in Sandy. At that point I realize that I may have dodged a bullet. Due to his negative beliefs about African Americans, Christopher could havr potentially put my life in danger intentionally. I would suggest that no person of color go to this shop for Service. It is very clear that Christopher is a racist and that his employers might feel the same way. read more

Slowest service. I was the first one in the shop when they opened and took over an hour for safety and emission. Then they rejected the safety because they incorrectly claimed the blinker didn't work. I went out and showed them 3 times that it worked properly And they still failed the car for the blinker. I normally go to a local shop in Layton seeing as I live and have worked there for years. I recently started working in Sandy and needed an oil change and a couple things fixed on my car. They were awesome!! They did a great job and even vacuumed my car for me. I would make the drive from Layton, no problem. They even gave me the coolest vehicle inspection report that let me know the overall health of my car. There was even a couple things that they found I did not know about and they did not pressure me at all, just said that they would recommend doing this sometime. I would Highly recommend! read more

They were very helpful fixing a leak in my tire. I was actually very frightened to go get service for the leak because the last time I had a leak in my front tire, the tire dealership told me that it couldn't be fixed and sold me four new tires. I decided that I would stop by McNeil's to see if I could make an appointment for someone to look at the tire since I pass the shop almost every day on my way to work. They fixed the tire, didn't charge me (unbelievable - told me to refer them to my friends), and where so nice to everyone in the waiting room. My car needs to have coolant put in, and an oil change. You can guarantee that I will be back in a few weeks for those services. I highly recommend them. read more

I was filling up my car at a gas station, and I locked my keys in my car. There was a McNeil's employee filling up his gas in a nearby car. I asked him to help me, and he had a car lock out kit and he unlocked my car free of charge. That really saved my day! David read more

My car wouldn't start so i had McNeil's tow it for me. turns out it was the starter. they got it fixed up and i was back on the road the next day. the starter they replaced did stop working about a month later, but they warrantied it free of charge! I'm a fairly forgiving Yelper but McNeils really outdid themselves when it came to upselling, shiftiness, and everything else which takes away from a mechanic being someone you can trust. Recently, moved to Utah and this place was close to home and had a neighborhood feel. However, over a series of visits, really started to question my choice. It's one thing if someone is running a business (it's cool, we all gotta get by) however after about three visits, resolved to never go here again. What? Three visits, it took you that long to figure out the place was dishonest? Yeah, I know, I'm not good at relationships either. Anyway, took a car there, with an engine light and was instantly informed I needed a new thousand dollar water pump. I bit the bullet and asked them to repair it, received the car back and the engine light was still on; took it back; and was charged again for another examination and an oil change; engine light still on. Took it later to another mechanic who said basically all I needed was an oil change. Brought another car for a tire change and the wrong tire was changed. The mechanic then insisted on charging me for the tire which was changed and the new one that would have to be installed. I got the feeling this was standard practice. There are a lot of honest mechanics and garages out there, but not here, not here. read more

Over the summer as I was driving I began to have issues with my A/C system blowing hot air and the engine temperature sensor came on. Since this was a road trip I didn't want to chance it so I looked up the nearest auto repair location. So I ended up here at McNeil's and I was greeted with nothing but attitude. The gut said he would be with me in one minute but that turned into 15. I watched as he had non business related conversations with other employees and was texting on his phone. When I tried to get his attention again he disappeared and sent someone else out to help me. When i was trying to explain my car issue he kepy interrupting and sighing.The overall feeling that I got was that I was bothering them and that they didnt want my money. Luckily there was another shop a few miles down because I refuse to force someone to take my money. Now I see their name floating around and they are fully supporting a racist employee. I can't say I'm surprised. Based on the treatment I received and the reviews others have posted they aren't fond of Black people. Smh read more

I was visiting Sandy, Utah from out of state and needed towing to a service station. AAA gave me McNeils as a service provider. The fellow who towed my Mercedes Station Wagon towed it from the rear instead of requesting a flatbed truck. I told the driver that I had hydraulic suspension and I was concerned about it being towed this way without my car being turned on and the suspension fully raised. He told me it wasn't a problem and not to worry. Later I found that the towing had caused considerable damage to the front wheel wells where the tires contacted metal and bent the metal lips outward. I was very nice when contacting McNeils over the phone. I sent them photographs and a description. The manager 'Jon' promised he would get back to me in two days. After a week had passed, I finally called him back. He apologized. Said he thought it was my fault and tried to blame it on my car's suspension - not the tow. As I attempted to tell him that my suspension was fine - we mysteriously became disconnected and he never returned my phone call. Today he wrote a brief note stating that they have decided they are not at fault and are blaming my suspension. Well. Yah! My suspension wasn't raised because my car wasn't on! They towed it wrong!! When we first spoke, Jon told me that the driver who towed my Mercedes was his most experienced....well - obviously the driver is not experienced enough to know about hydraulic suspensions on Mercedes...or to care...or to own up to his own mistake. Instead trying to blame the customer. 'Jon', as head manager of McNeils, is obviously not as professional as he pretends. Instead he tried to ignore the matter, was not timely, and prefers to pass blame on the customer. He may find that his mistakes as manager will find the owner of the company getting sued. I hope oothers that read this will think twice before using McNeils services. read more

I've never actually written a review like this, but the service I received here was so horrendous I felt compelled to write about it. I wish I could give it an even lower rating. My car broke down a few weeks ago, having some engine problems that caused it to shut off randomly. I called AAA and the tow truck driver recommended this place to me. He said as a member I'd receive a discount, so I accepted. I received a call about 2 days later, I swear, that went like this: "We ran a diagnostic and found a problem with your diaphragm. We ordered a part, it'll be here tomorrow." And hung up with no further explanation. I came in the next day, told them the car I was picking up, and asked if I could get a little more explanation on what it was that was wrong. They said they "found a minor leak in the diaphragm and ordered a replacement part". The replacement part cost me $330, with another $50 on top for labor, after the discount for being AAA. They didn't wait for my approval, nor did they explain what part they ordered, but apparently it put me out about $400. The kicker? My car suffered from its original problem even worse after they gave it back. I have a few recommendations for mechanics, but if anyone asks, the first words out of my mouth from now on will always be "Keep it away from McNeil's." read more

Went out to my car this evening to run a couple quick errands. Found one of your trucks parked behind mine jumping the SUV that was parked two spots over from mine. Gave it a few more minutes before getting into my car to allow everything to get finished. That's when the waiting game began. Maybe it's just me but I'm not ok confronting 2 men outside in the dark so in my car I waited, and waited and waited. Watched the guy close the hood, write up an invoice on the hood of the service truck and then go back and talk to the other man about his vehicle. 15 minutes I waited for you to move and when you did it was about 6 feet forward where now your rear of your truck was blocking me instead of the front, where you sat another minute before finally moving far enough for me to back up. Was me getting into my car and turning it on not enough warning for you to please move? I thought for sure my back up lights would be but I was wrong again. My mistake. read more

McNeil's has done a great job taking care of my car. I had a problem with my fuel pump and they towed my car for free, took care of the problem, and charged me a fair price. A little later on, I had a leak in the system somewhere. They identified the leak and told me it would cost about $200 just to look at it because they actually had to remove the fuel tank. However, when they went to do the work, they were able to see the leak (a tube had come unattached) before the tank was even completely lowered. They connected it up and decided not to charge me at all because they were able to fix it so easily! It was definitely great. And their actions have engendered my trust. I know I'm dealing with honest people. I've also taken my car there for oil changes, etc, and they have always done a great job. Once, I had a burnt out head light that they didn't notice when I dropped it off and they gave me the quote. But they replaced it and didn't charge me for it because they hadn't told me about it ahead of time. They also have nice things like popcorn while you wait, and a free ride back to work (as long as it's close by) if it's going to be a long time. Overall, great service, and they're honest. read more

On Sunday after a call to AAA, Colin arrived to help us. He was extremely personable as well as professional. Our car was dead. He boosted us and car started right up. After a brief discussion we decided to replace the battery. After he had us hooked up & running he did diagnostics on the alternator & starter. He determined we were good to go !! I just bought a car so i took it to McNeil's to find out if there is any maintenance i need to do with it. Well when i got in there in the morning i had approached the front counter. I sat there for about 2 mins while i watched two employees flirt with each other and slightly groping one another . A guy named john finally approached me and asked what he could help me with. If it wasn't for him i would have just left and went somewhere else. Found out the two employees names as i was waiting for my 39 point inspection. I think you need to tell Troy and Ashley to keep the PDA to a minimal. read more

SCAMMERS!! Had my car towed here by AAA. They clearly tried to take advantage of me because I was towed there and live 25 miles away. First they tried to charge me $300 for a new coolant tank. I said okay because although it sounded too high, at least my car would be fixed. After replacing the coolant tank they then called me again and told me the piece where the coolant tank connects to the radiator was broken and I would need a new radiator costing $900. At this point I paid to have the car towed back to my home. Upon inspecting the radiator it is clear as day the piece was broken off by the technician. The way the piece was broken there is no way a person could not have broken it. I contacted the manager, Manny, who said he had personally seen the car. He told me although the car clearly looks like it was broken by the tech, he trusts his tech when he said he did not do it. I wish this company had some type of integrity to at least tell me they broke my radiator. Please stay away. read more

Second visit to McNeil's. My car had starting issues out of the blue. The guys at Mcneil's were very busy and so my car had to wait an extra day until it could be examined, and initial repairs didn't fix the problem completely, but my car is now running very well. I appreciate the guys work and dedication. Advice: do not try to take your car in on Mondays for everyday maintenance. It was packed. Thursday/Friday seemed a bit better. read more

Driver parked his tow truck in the middle of a small residential street and refused to move it so neighbors could get by. Truck sat idling for more than 15 min. Driver said we could call the police if we wanted. Management made excuses for him and hung up on me. Poor public relations is a sign of a poorly managed company. Would not recommend to anyone. read more
