In Bangor for a couple days. It was great to see a roadside seafood spot. 6 of us stopped for lunch and had a large part of the menu. Scallops, clams, clam strips, haddock, lobstah roll and a tuna roll. Outside covered seating and lots of fun. read more

7 Stars.....The food was amazing, came in for winter vacation from Florida and wanted nothing but Maine lobster, unfortunately kitchen was closed for full menu items but had what I really wanted, lobster. The prices were extremely reasonable, don't mind paying the price for the value received. The staff was working very hard preparing orders but took my order immediately and was absolutely the friendliest people you could meet even while being swapped with orders.. Returned for more food three times during our stay , yes that good and that fresh. The ambiance was ok considering they serve seafood and obviously it's not a five star restaurant. My First time to Maine. Passing through Bangor toward Jonesport and stopped here for lunch. Great stop off 395 in continuing on - very easy to off the highway. Sat outside at a picnic table - cool spot along the road. My wife, mother in law and I shared a lobster roll, fish chowder, and clam chowder. Was our first lobster roll of the trip and man was it good. The chowder hit the spot too, though we agreed the fish chowder was better than their clam chowder - no harm no foul! All of it was good. Thought this place was overpriced as it was the first seafood place we visited on our trip. Writing this review at the end, it now seems like one of the more reasonable options. On your way up to Maine, this place is worth a try. Had the lobster roll which they don't really add much too, no fancy garnishes, no fancy sauces. Just lobster and roll. I actually appreciated that they let the lobster really speak for itself, but I did find myself wanting more. In fact most of the food here seems a little plain, dare I say on the brink of being under seasoned. There is that indisputable seafood flavor though... and a faint rotting fish aroma coming from the seafood market attached next door. Had the chowder and crabcakes too which were up to par. Covered outdoor seating at picnic tables. Can get busy at lunch on weekends but otherwise is usually fairly empty. Located in a very easy to miss small town off the highway. Not bad but not great. Let's start with the good. The fries were delicious and a nice portion. Yep, that's it. Seafood chowder or as it looked and tasted the "water onion" liquid had seafood in it but was tasteless. Was that a piece of shrimp? Or haddock? Your guess is as good as mine. The fried clams were soggy and the clam roll tasted liked watered down crab. The roll was nicely toasted. Cole slaw had a weird taste so I can't help you on that one. So for more than $40, we left to try another place for the seafood we are craving. The tables were not wiped down. read more

This McLaughlin's location serves mainly baskets and fried sides, which can be eaten on the patio or taken to go. Their adjoining seafood market has a large selection of fish, clams, and lobster at lower than supermarket prices (and probably fresher!). On the restaurant side, people come for the seafood, but none of the baskets are particularly cheap. They have daily specials, which are deceptive in that the prices are only marginally cheaper than normal. On Sundays, the lobster roll with fries and coleslaw is $13.50. The actual lobster was delicious with just the right amount of mayonaise on a perfect toasted piece of white bread. The fries were crispy and the coleslaw was also good. The only problem was that the size was minuscule. I felt like I was ordering off of the kids menu. It's easy to feel slighted after paying nearly $14 for something that doesn't fill you up. The same goes for their coconut shrimp ($8 for 6 pieces). The shrimp and coconut batter was excellent, but it's not something that you can make a meal out of. read more

Based just on the food, this would definitely be a first-class place. The relatively early closing took an edge off things --- 8pm closing is plenty for a fish shop, but cutting it a bit early for a restaurant. We were the last group to get our orders in before they started shutting down. The bigger issue was the location --- right by the road, with one customer idling their engine while waiting for takeout. Neither aspect would be easy to fix, but they both stick in my memory. It's not fair to compare this Bangor location to someplace right on the coast, but it did give a different feel. Still, the food hit the spot. I'm a sucker for anything lobster. The cute layout of this seafood spot is hard to pass. There are tables and seats, picnic -style, set up right by the parking area. You order at the window and they serve you your food when it's ready. I've had the crab roll, lobster meal and also the fried mushrooms. Everything was quite good, service was friendly. I especially liked the fried mushrooms, it came with a buttermilk ranch dip, delicious. McLaughlin's also have a seafood market next door. I suggest coming earlier on in the day if you want something; I was there around 3-4pm and they barely had any seafood left. I can only speak to what I've had, the customer service was polite and friendly, food came up almost too quick (not cooked long enough). Bottled water I got was room temp not cold. I ordered fish and onion rings basket and it was by far the most bland fish and onion rings I've ever had. The color was a little off putting as both were a light beige color and there was absolutely no taste / flavor. I've had others in the area and I usually don't even need to add salt or pepper but on this one it was like I couldn't add enough. I only come here to get the fried clams. They are some of the best in the area. Also they have great sweet potato fries and regular fries. Get the small plate- it has plenty of food and the clams are breaded nicely. prices is around 15$ if you get that and a drink. very pricey however... can find the same food cheaper however you wont find it as fresh anywhere else. I saw the reviews about this place and decided to check it out. I am not from the area and I had a bad experience the day before with chowder so I had to try again somewhere else. I got there and the place has a small store to the right where you buy fresh seafood and then to the left there's some picnic tables and a window to order food. Very rustic but kind of fun. I checked the menu above the window and decided to get the clam chowder and a side of fries. I approached the window and a nice lady greeted me and asked me what I wanted, but unfortunately they were out of clam chowder so then I decided to go with the fish chowder. I paid, sat down and waited for my meal. After a few minutes a lady called my number and approached me with the cup of soup and fries. I started with the soup and I am not sure what is happening to me but I got another terrible chowder in Maine... It tasted like water down milk with chucks of something flaky, but with absolutely no taste whatsoever. I couldn't believe so I ate my fries and left to eat somewhere else after throwing away the soup. The fries were good but the soup was very disappointing. I did not try anything else because I was now scared to spend more money but the other people around me seem to be enjoying their meals so something else must be good here I just didn't get it. read more

I would come to McLaughlin Seafood again if I was in the area! They are open until 8pm. It's less than a quarter mile off 395, so it's very easy to miss. Nonetheless, it's a great find. I love the casual and simple atmosphere. The service was very helpful and friendly! I thought the food was a little pricey, two entrees and 3 drinks came out to about $60. The lazy lobster tray was pricey but the quality was great. Nothing fancy with seasoning, just straightforward seafood. But they give butter and lemons for you to dip/season to your liking. The bucket of clams comes with enough clams to feed two people (or one clam lover) and an extra bucket for shells. Be warned that the clams are very sandy. All seating is outdoors, but there is a big canopy for shelter. They have picnic tables and tables for two (chairs side-by-side). Don't waste your money like we did. My husband and I stopped by McLaughlin on the recommendation we received while having dinner last evening at Evenroods. We love supporting local restaurants when we travel so we headed to McLaughlins for lunch. What a complete disaster - and it wasn't even crowded. We ordered the clam steamers and a fried haddock basket. The clams were entirely filled with sand! The batter around the haddock was plain cornmeal with zero seasoning of any kind. The coleslaw was tasty but that was it. At $40 including tip, we were very unhappy. We ended up throwing lunch away and headed for Sea Dog Brewing. You should, too. read more
