An by the way, was it Tahitian or Haitian food? It sure did not help that the waitress did not speak English, neither that we did not speak French. However, when the chef who did speak English, came out to us in order to explain the alien menu and brought us a taste, we knew we had found the perfect place. The food was superb. Pure flavors of coconut, rice and banana was combined in a complex and accurate way. We were stunned over this 3 course Polynesian food, as google now had told us it was. There wasn't the slightest hesitation about improvising a 3 course vegan menu for me. And the chef sure did know what he was doing. I had a sweet potato sallad with coconut milk and tropical fruit for starter, a lovely noodle main course and hot banana compote for desert. Brilliant, every piece of it. Why a missing star then? The food was everything here. The interior was neat but boring and the place lacked decorations and details to make the atmosphere inviting and truly enjoyable. Except from the chef, the service was a teasing distraction. But that might be due to our different languages. I truly recommend this place overall. Had one of my best evenings in Bordeaux here!

I've had a fair amount of tacos living in France over the last year - a "French taco" not a…read more"Mexican taco", much to my chagrin. French tacos are like a grilled burrito, filled with your choice of meat, sauce (mostly cream based, and/or cheese), and fries. Not really your healthiest meal, but still tasty, cheap, and filling. The tacos here are French tacos, and not Mexican tacos. We were looking for food before getting on a 2 hour train, and this was one of the few places open on a Sunday (welcome to France) and we only had 15-20 to get something to go, so tacos worked well. This whole area seems fairly quiet and not heavily trafficked -- so not quite sure how fresh the meat and food are here, with not a ton of turnover. We opted for a bruschetta and a taco, but I would just stick to the tacos, I didn't care for the bruschetta. We got the bruschetta which I wouldn't recommend - we go the BBQ flavor, which was a piece of bread, smeared with BBQ sauce, a lot of ground beef, a slice of turkey or ham, and a ton of mozzarella cheese on top. It was a bit messy to eat, so don't get this if you're going to eat it outside of the restaurant or planning to take it on the train. I wouldn't get this again - I much preferred the taco. You can pick the size of taco that you want, with your choice of meats - as you go up in size (and price), you can pick an additional meat to add. We got chicken and ground beef with a harissa sauce which was a good combo. It had fries and either cheese or creme fraiche inside and was pretty rich and carb-heavy. I liked it, but if you're trying to eat healthy, this should not really be your choice. The taco was grilled and kept warm in the foil for 15 min or so while we walked to the train station, so it's a good choice if you want something to eat as you're walking or in transit. I didn't think any of the meats were of particularly great quality - it felt a bit cheap and greasy, but you get what you pay for I suppose. I don't know if I would come here again - it was fine for something quick and easy, but I've had better "tacos" in France. This is fine if there's nothing open and you're hungry and want something inexpensive, but it's nothing I'd necessarily go back for.

Fainà is set right on Place Fernand Lafargue, a lively pedestrian square in the heart of Bordeaux…read moresurrounded by beautiful old stone buildings, cafés and plenty of people-watching. There is only a very small indoor area, so most of the tables are outside on the terrace. We visited on an especially hot day, but thankfully they had fans around the terrace, which made sitting outside much more comfortable. We ordered a pasta dish and the Fugazetta pizza, one of their specialties topped with confit onions, mozzarella and oregano. The pizza was definitely the highlight: light, flavorful and very satisfying. The pasta was enjoyable too, although not quite as memorable. The location and outdoor atmosphere are what make this place worth visiting. Service, however, could have been better. It was slow and sometimes difficult to get the staff's attention, particularly when we were ready to order and later when we wanted to pay. Overall, it's a pleasant casual stop for pizza, drinks and people-watching while exploring Bordeaux, but I would recommend going when you're not in a hurry.
