Everything went well for my first consultation! I am super excited to be going to the McCarl Dental Group for my dental needs. I was sad to have lost my dentist of approximately 18 years after she retired. Since then, I have had 2 other dentists and I have to say there was much to be desired. I didn't feel like I was a valued patient and I was driving 15 miles to get to them. Thus my quest to find a new dentist. A friend recommended her dentist and I am very happy to have found the McCarl Dental Group. Everyone I met at this office has been super friendly and helpful. I'm happy to have Dr Lee as my dentist and the dental hygienists, Nancy and Meagan are both very thorough and knowledgeable. The bonus is they are located very close to where I live so I no longer have to drive 15 miles. I highly recommend them. read more

After I had several extractions and got same day dentures and posts put in for implants then I changed my mind Dr. Lee removed the posts. Recently on going to another dentists imagine my surprised when the ex-ray showed that there is still a post in my bottom gum. They offered to take it out but haven't decided yet since it doesn't bother me. Was this an oversight on her part? Does she have too many patients? Was I a difficult patient? She told me once that she never had a patient with as many problems (I called and came in a lot with problems being a new denture wearer). I'm giving 3 stars because Dr. Lee a fairly good bedside manner and the other people in the office are very nice. Didn't care much for Frances (a little pushy). read more

I was in the area for a job when my tooth started hurting so bad that all I could do was cry. Showed up at this practice still crying. The staff was very accommodating. I never felt judged or unwelcomed. The Dr and his assistant were also very patient and knowledgeable. I was treated with respect and I left with a plan to present to my regular dentist in FL. I work with celebrities and professional sports players. I'm going to let everyone know about this practice just in case they find themselves in a challenging situation as I just did. Kuddos. After over 6 years of being disfigured by Dr Lee, (pulling 28 teeth with NO sedation, ripping out healthy back teeth, breaking my jaw in several spots, selling me dentures that looked and felt like they weren't made for me, then I paid a TON of money to them, and all the posts she placed in my mouth popped out!) I'm FINALLY getting dental surgery to correct what this horrible woman has done! I've been dealing with PTSD because of HER and HER ALONE!! Please please please!! They NEED to shut down!! I was treated well, the work I had done was good, the building is clean and pretty. That said, I suspect they over inflate how much work you need to have done and they throw you in a room with a stern sales person when you have a "discounted" cleaning and checkup. You are pretty much scared into thinking you need to spend thousands upon thousands to have emergency work done. Which I suspect most people do. I calculated how much they may make by going on how full I see their business, and I wonder, could they be actually making half a million a month or more? As a POOR person who wants good service and the boutique experience, I would love to just blissfully and blindly love them like everyone else, but I don't have that a thriftless blind spot since I cannot afford to. I think I may need to get a second opinion somewhere else. If I get the same doom and gloom opinion, I will amend my review. Either way, I will come back and report whether or not they over inflate scraggly teeth dangers. read more

I was referred to Dr. Jay by multiple professionals in the field (oral surgeons, doctors who are also patients here, other dentists). Originally I came in for cosmetic work, but I was pleasantly surprised by the quality of general dentistry I receive here as well. I got my veneers here, and they are beautiful! :) Honestly, I would not trust anyone else with this, only Dr. Jay. I am always very suspicious about purely cosmetic transformations, but I trust Dr. Jay. And now I have a smile that everyone thinks is natural, but It's all Dr. Jay's work. I recently referred my family here, another doctor. They see Dr. Lee and couldn't be happier. From dental hygienist Megan to every doctor and every piece of cutting edge equipment they have, it's always perfect. Same-day crowns - they got it (in house)! Affordable pricing and a team willing to navigate the complex insurance landscape to get reimbursement. Minimal anesthesia (sometimes none, and it doesn't hurt) and a lightning speed of execution without discomfort - I got over my fear of dentistry here. I have only written a handful of reviews in my life because I find it hard to give high ratings in general, but I am very comfortable bragging about this gem today, after spending last 6 or so years in these talented hands. read more

I've been coming here for over 10 years. My husband has been coming even longer than that. They're great! I never have to wait, the staff is really friendly yet professional, and the office is clean. Dr. Dave is funny and usually has an interesting story to share. Even the reminders about flossing are gentle and supported by periodontal check results. (Darn those gums!) I truly have no complaints. Although the dentist's office isn't where I would choose to spend my time, I like the teeth I have so I go regularly. I can't imagine a better dentist. read more

A few years ago I went to see Dr. Jay (McCarl) after my dentist retired and i needed to find a new dental "home" and a neighbor told me her mom loved the McCarl dentists. I interviewed the front desk staff prior to going because I like to ask practitioners questions about procedures and treatment especially this time since I was a self pay patient. They recommended that Dr. Jay would be the best fit, stating he was chatty. The front desk staff and his financial/insurance manager were outstanding, very polite, sweet and knowledgeable. I had not had my teeth cleaned yet that year and they recommended that I get a cleaning first. His main hygienist was very competent, but her behavior was that of a bitter and cranky lady, not to mention disrespectful -- (told me that no matter how deep my mouth sore, I needed to floss and that I was not in shape to have Dr. Jay even look into my mouth!) I was shocked since I floss and brush everyday except that week due to the sore (later found out it was from a cracked filling/tooth) I could not floss that area as I was drinking my meals out of a straw. Hellooooooo I was in pain and that is why I was there. She needed to be more diplomatic, but noooo she continued on-I felt insulted-stating that good thing I saw her before Dr. Jay! When I finally saw Dr. Jay he was super nice, charming, brilliantly informative and a great salesman! FULL SARCASM --"Do you want extra toppings on your filling? They are only $500 each? Um, you look like you need 3 of them for a grand total of $3,000!! So cheap!!!" No thank you said I, SNAP!!! in my head... His dental assistant was a sweet young naive girl. She did not possess initiative nor confidence and was lethargic and chatty while she should have been focusing. and I was a bit scared because she did not seem to know much -- he kept asking her to do this and that as if he were training her and she was clueless to most of what he wanted. Later I found out that she was a newbie and had no experience except at her school. From her mouth to my ears. YIKES! Since I had 2 teeth that were cracked and the fillings were a mess, I needed to come to see him twice for fillings and tooth repair. The first appointment was heart-stopping because it was him and the newbie and I felt that she should not have worked on a delicate and long procedure such as I had that day. After the procedure I left his office a wreck. The filling felt as if it were pinching the gum and it was throbbing. I called about 4 hours later to report no relief and he said that it would go away, but it did not. YIKES, pain non-stop from the pinched gum. How could this happen in a state of the art practice? For the second appt. he did the other tooth with no problem and with no assistant--and he tried to file down the pinched tooth, at which time I told him it still hurt. He said it would be alright and that in a few days the swelling would reside and all would be well. NOT! I was mad as hell when after a few days that pinched gum against tooth was driving me mad...it had morphed into a slow throb NONSTOP. So I called and demanded that he do something...front desk people said he would not be in the office for the week, because he was at their other location and they would have another dentist look at it. Went in and Dr. X, she (can't remember her name but she was from the military-not a McCarl) looked at it - said it was fine, she tried to file it??? Gave me an anesthetic mouthwash and said, Dr. Jay did the right thing, I do not know why you are having this problem!? I told her I have never experienced anything like what had happened and perhaps the filling needed to be redone or restructured? She said no, it was all fine. I sucked it up, bought some expensive anesthetic mouthwash and lived with that low dose pain for a few years. I found a wonderful old school dentist (he is still my dentist) who took the time to examine, x-ray, probe and most importantly ask questions while probing the problem and VOILA! He had to redo the filling because he found it was crushing my gum against the other tooth! After his filling no more pain, nor problems. AMAZING! THE FOLLOWING REASONS ARE BASED SOLELY ON MY VISITS WITH TWO DENTISTS FROM THE MCCARL GROUP AND DOES NOT REFLECT THE WORK OF OTHER DENTISTS PRACTICING THERE: I would not recommend the McCarl Group because: The dentist you see one day may not be available when you need them the next; Only from my experience it appears as if the dentists cover up for each others mistakes--which probably happens in all areas of medicine worldwide. Only from my experience they save money by hiring inexperienced personnel; Only from my experience they have employees who can say whatever they want and get away with it, probably because of their long tenure Try to "sell" you everything under the sun for cosmetic use or procedures which are available but not medically necessary. I started going to Dr. Mattson at the McCarl group a few years ago, and my husband has been going to the office as well (he's seen a few different dentists, depending on his schedule) for the last two years. We are both thrilled with the service we've had there! I came in after having been to a TMJ specialist who was trying to convince me to spend what promised to be thousands of dollars to get specialized dental gear (I bear down on my teeth at night and get bad headaches from this). I explained this (and my issues) during my initial checkup and Dr. Mattson suggested trying a small guard that snaps onto my teeth at night--WAY cheaper. They were able to make it in the office that day, and my headaches were gone within a week. The staff has always been professional and courteous, the hygienists remember details about me (or write them down - I don't know, but they always follow up on how I'm doing in non-dental life), and Dr. Mattson is incredibly efficient, friendly, and makes me feel at ease. The one time I had to have a filling she even let me listen to my iPod cranked up (I hate dental drill sounds). The way the insurance has worked for me is they estimate what I'll owe after insurance and I pay that that day. Then they bill me if it ends up being more (they're usually not far off at all). I've visited this dentist several times to have some corrections made on the work that my previous dentist has done. I've been impressed with both the friendliness of the office and dental staff. I also love that the dentists I've seen have done a great job explaining exactly what and why they are doing what they are doing. However, my one complaint (and reason why they are receiving 3 stars) is that my visits have been absurdly slow. Each one has taken at least an hour (up to 2+ hours) for something that was originally quoted as needing 20 minutes. I spent 45 minutes waiting in the chair all prepped to see the dentist one appointment. The fault lies in the fact (as explained to me) that if one dentist is out, the other one picks up his/her appointments. While the dentists I've seen have always been very apologetic, it is really unrealistic to expect someone to spend 2 hours at a dentist appointment who is both working and taking classes. The work has been great, however, so if you have the time to spare, definitely come here. read more

I went to McCarl for the first time yesterday and this will for sure be my new dentist office. I have had jaw pain for months and thought it might be my wisdom teeth but my old dentist kept telling me they were fine and didn't need to be removed. Yesterday I woke up and my face was swollen and I knew something was wrong. I called McCarl and the receptionist I spoke to was extremely helpful and was able to get me an appointment for 3 hours later. When I arrived, there was no wait and a very nice hygienist took X-rays. I saw doctor Lee and she told me my wisdom teeth are actually impacted and should be taken out. She prescribed me an antibiotic to clear up any potential infection as well as ibuprofen for pain. I was really anxious to go in but Doctor Lee had a super pleasant and calm demeanor which helped me a lot. She referred me to an oral surgeon who I have a consult with at the end of the month and told me if I have anymore issues she can refill my antibiotic. Im really thankful that I was able to be seen and put on medication before the holiday weekend. They also have an emergency line for after hours which I think is really nice. read more

Its been a while since I once ventured to this office, so perhaps (and hopefully) things have changed. However I can't help but warn about this office because of my bad experience. I only went here because my regular dentist was booked and it was right in my neighborhood. Yes there were flashy t.v.s but that was probably to cover the sleazy work being done. I've never had a cavity in my mouth (still to this day) but at Dr. McCarl's I was informed I was on the verge of getting 13 cavities. (YES, 13... practically my whole mouth was rotting according to them) I was also told that I needed my wisdom teeth out ASAP... even though 6 months ago my regular dentist said they were fine. Next, the hygenist gave me a rude attitude about not flossing, and then flossed my teeth forcefully to teach me a lesson... and make my gums bleed and stay sore for the next 2 following days. Well, when I returned to my regular dentist 6 months later, he said I had no cavities, and my wisdom teeth didn't need to be out either. Perfect check-up according to him. 5 years later, I still have no cavities, have never had a bad appointment, and just a couple months ago finally had to have my wisdom teeth out. It seemed me at the time that Dr. McCarl's office was out to make as much money as possible and would go so far as to lie about their patients conditions. However, they don't make money off of referring patients so perhaps my instincts were wrong. True story: I had a friend who went here with a cavity-free mouth and came out with 7 cavities... All I'm saying is that if this happens to you, get a 2nd opinion. Would NEVER go back to this office again!!! * As a follow-up, I have received several messages from the office which was a nice gesture... not quite nice enough to change my review, but at least it shows they care. *As a second (and hopefully final!!!) follow up.... I feel that I should clarify a few things since this review has been flagged (really? .. thats what I said, but yes) 1. The dentist did not order me to have any cavities filled, he just told me I was on the verge of getting them, as I stated above. (a scare tactic?..) 2. Ok, so its been a while so I can't remember if the exact number he told me was 13.. perhaps that was an exaggeration. But I remember it was insanely high. at least 9 3. I do agree with the person from the office who has been sending me messages that everyone should floss and be encouraged to do so ... (just not in such a harsh way. ) 4. Finally, by using the word "sleazy" I was only describing my personal experience at the time, and my opinion of the services rendered... not the entire office and every staff member. 5. Such a wonderful dentist. I went to Dr. Jay McCarl throughout high school and college. Then, had to switch once I got my own insurance a few years ago. That's the only unfortunate part... they don't subscribe to any insurance, it's all supplemented. The extra cost is worth it and you really do get what you're paying for- but it's hard to convince a young college-graduate that. Dr. Jay and his brothers/sister, etc. work together in a large practice in Old Greenbelt (in a large converted home, very convenient and cozy). I have been seen by several of the dentists and all are very qualified and leave you feeling like you are in good hands- because you are! The front staff, the hygienists, everyone is just so nice and accommodating. If they find cavities while you're in there, they typically make time to fix them at that point- rather than have you make another appointment. My parents and many friends still go to them and everyone just loves them. read more

My primary dentist is Jay McCarl and he's the best!!! He interacts with his patients and listens to my concerns and issues I have related to my teeth. In addition, he personally calls to follow up on my outside referrals or surgery I may have had to review the results he receives. The price for dental services are pretty much cheaper if not the same compared to the going dental rates with other practices. The administrative staff are truly friendly and will work with you every step of the way in regards to payment and follow up visits. I love the office since it's very clean and the staff work around the clock to provide for their patients. read more

I'm happy to travel from DC to Greenbelt for the excellent care and customer service at McCarl Dental (specifically, Dr. Clayton). It is as pleasant as going to the dentist can be. The staff and dentists will treat you like an intelligent adult as they walk you through your x-rays, any problems you have, and the ways you might treat them. She is EXCELLENT! She is patient with questions and very good at explaining things. This office LOST my military dental record. The doctor, who specifically asked me if he could hang on to my record to look it over, now has "no recollection" of ever seeing it. The doctor very poorly explained the issue I was having and left me to fill in the blanks with my own inferences. In his own words, "Sometimes root canals go bad," to which I responded, "What do you mean?" He said, "They just go bad." Not something you'd want to hear from a doctor. I do not recommend this doctor to anyone. read more

The facility is nice and the staff is helpful. I got an appointment booked no problem and my follow-up visit was also scheduled promptly. I hadn't been to the dentist in about 4 years and wasn't looking forward to going.. but now I schedule follow-up appointments without hesitation. Dr. Lee was my dentist and I found her very helpful and informative. The hygenists are also very informative and answer questions well. Prices are reasonable and they are flexible with payment methods if you don't have insurance. Two cleanings and 1 filling so far in the last couple months and no complaints. Looking forward to playing catch-up on my dental work and going there regularly now to keep it up. read more

Outstanding practice. Over the years I have had extensive work done by several of the dentists at McCarl. I have never once waited more than 5 minutes for any appointment. They seem to always be on top of the latest advancements in dental procedures and handle equipment and tools with such great confidence as though they invented the products. First rate operation from everyone I encountered with very warm and friendly front desk staff too. I always am made to feel at ease when I walk in this office which is probably hard to believe given their line of work. I am so thankful I now live fairly close. I use to drive over 50 miles for appointments having had my share of horror stories sitting in other chairs. read more

I have been going to Mccarl Dental Group for many years now, and have always received top of the line treatment and service. Dr. Jay McCarl has filled several cavities for me, and he does a great job while making it as stress free as possible. I came to McCarl Dental Group after having ignored the dentist for over ten years. My mouth was in terrible shape. Over the course of the last year and a half, I have been working with Dr. Diana Lee to correct the numerous problems. This has included a large number of fillings (too many to keep track of), approximately 10 crowns, straightening, cleanings, wisdom teeth removal, etc. The front office staff is extremely friendly and remembers all the patients, as does the entirety of the dental staff. They are very easy to work with and very accommodating with scheduling, changes, etc. The billing department is meticulous about working with insurance companies for your benefit. I had something like $15,000 worth of work done, and I am not exaggerating, and the office often did my part for me in communicating with my insurance. They got things pre approved, and resubmitted them when they were not. Truly above and beyond. Dr. Lee herself is amazing. I have never once felt an ounce of pain in her chair which is incredible considering the amount of trauma my mouth has gone through. She has made herself available around the clock for me, accepted me spur of the moment as a walk in, and worked on while pregnant right up until she was ready to burst. She is kind hearted, friendly, outgoing and goes to great lengths to make sure all the work is satisfactory and her patients feel comfortable. I cannot recommend this office enough, especially for those with anxiety about dental visits. read more

Went here for an initial checkup and won't be back. First they said my insurance would pay for the cost, later they called back saying the insurance actually didn't so I needed to pay more. Said I needed a return visit because they couldn't do a full cleaning in one visit. Got lots of fancy pictures. Left feeling like my teeth hadn't been taken care of and like they wanted to have a deep relationship...with my wallet. read more

I've been going to the McCarl dental group for a little over 3 years now and have had a pleasant experience each time. The office staff is very courteous and always calls to give me an appointment reminder during the week of my visits. My hygienist, Sally is great and does a great job keeping me calm during my cleaning. She always knows when I've been lying about my flossing habits...she definitely knows what she's doing and is very experienced. The dentist that I see is Dr. Clayton. He is always cheerful and seems to remember everything I've told him from previous visits. He's also a sports nut so there's always something to talk about if you are a guy. I definitely would not hesitate to recommend this practice to any of my family members or friends. read more

As visitors to the area, we were understandably distressed when our 10-year-old fell off her bike and chipped off half her front tooth (bottom). The campground proprietors recommended McCarl. We called at 4PM and by 5:30 it was as though the accident had never happened. They saw us immediately, calmed all of us down, did a great job in working with our daughter and fixing the tooth. Everyone was incredibly kind, communicative, and thoroughly professional. I chipped my front tooth recently, and (having slacked on regular dental appointments recently) wasn't sure who to call. I am actually friends with Dr. Clayton's son, so I called him for advice. He got me in for an appointment and did an incredible job of fixing my tooth. Having a chipped front tooth was extremely embarassing, but now it looks and feels perfectly natural. Completely regardless of my friendship with his son, I would absolutely recommend Dr. Clayton to anybody that needs dental work done. read more

Clayton has been my dentist for more than 25 years. I've worked with a couple of other dentists in the practice and with many of the dental hygienists and others on their team. Their service is exemplary and I'm always confident that I'll be receiving the best dental treatment available. I've had fillings, crowns, a root canal and other services over the years. Recently, I had crown veneers applied to my front upper teeth (which, had chips, showed wear and with a significant gap between the front teeth). The result is absolutely stunning and natural looking. The practice is accommodating with insurance and scheduling visits with the front desk is always pleasant. I have price compared and they are competitive or better - and, honestly, if they were priced a bit higher than the rest I would still work with them. For 25 years my family has been traveling from Rockville to Greenbelt for their superior service and I couldn't recommend them more highly. read more

I really wanted to like them since my friend goes there. I believe they are quicker to act on potential work than I prefer. They recommended I remove a tooth and get a very expensive dental implant. I decided to get a 2nd opinion and went to another dentist. He did a filling on the tooth and a couple years later the original tooth was still in good shape. After that a neighbor told me this office told her that her son had 2 cavities and when she went for a 2nd opinion they did not see any cavities. read more

I've been using the McCarl dentistry group for more than twenty years and have never had a bad experience. They always get you in on time, they are gentle and friendly, and they are respectful of your personal preferences. They understand that I do not want extra radiation and so decline x-rays. They always offer them, but never lecture me or argue about the importance of them. They flag tender areas or places that might be going to be a problem in the future and then leave it up to me if I would like to get treatment now or later. I haven't had any insurance for the past few years, and they are understanding of that. They say things like, "well that filling will be OK another six months, but keep an eye on it." When I have had an emergency, they have fit me in that day or the following day. I once had a cap come off and they replaced it for free. I cannot recommend them highly enough. They treat you like family -- and not the dysfunctional kind! read more
