While this charter school once was renowned for high scores it is currently transitioning its focus from academics to a more political based school. Funds, many which come from parents donations, are being spent on unnecessary hires. It is sad to see the downfall of what was once one of Charlotte's finest. But as they say, all good things come to an end. If looking for a charter school, please look at other options or even public schools at this point.

We paid over $17xx a month, and it is not worth the stress. Things have soured with my employer due to all of the missed days. My son recently had to get stitches due to a head injury here, which was the final straw. I still dont understand what happened. Just keep looking.

A new principal is on board, Carmen Concepcion. 3. A new vice principal is also on board, Toyia Matthews. Although I miss Mr. Tampa tremendously! Lots of new things are happening at Oaklawn. Warning for Parents Considering WGCS As a parent, I feel compelled to share my experience with WGCS…read morein the hope that it helps others make an informed decision. From my perspective, the leadership at the school, particularly the owner, Kyle Boyd, demonstrated a style that felt rigid and, at times, difficult to work with. I felt that communication lacked transparency, and it seemed to me that decisions were often made without considering the well-being of the students and their families. My child entered WGCS as a mild-mannered, enthusiastic student. However, during our time there, I noticed significant changes in his demeanor that concerned me. I also had questions about the academic curriculum. Despite the school's claims of offering an advanced curriculum, in my opinion, it did not meet South Carolina's academic standards. I observed that extra credit was frequently used to raise students' grades, which left me concerned about the consistency and rigor of grading practices. Also, I felt as if communications between teachers and parents were lacking or non-existent; especially in Math. Athletics were another point of concern. While the school promotes its commitment to offering several athletic programs, in my experience, there was no on-site gymnasium, and the off-site facility used did not feel particularly safe or appropriate for school sports (and it is across town). Additionally, I found the handling of my son's attempt to play public school sports troubling. I felt that WGCS staff misrepresented facts in a way that ultimately harmed his opportunity. Thank GOD for AAU sports, which more than prepared him to play next year. What the devil meant for evil, GOD turned it around for his good! Spiritually and culturally, I had hoped for a community that uplifted and embraced Christian values such as honesty, fairness, and love. Unfortunately, I did not feel that those values were consistently demonstrated here. As a parent of a minority child, I also observed what I perceived as a lack of inclusion, particularly in how students were recognized during school awards. In our time at the school, I did not see any minority student receive certain awards that are meant to reflect strong Christian character. It's very difficult for me to write this, and I waited until the end of the school year to do so because I did not want my son to face any retaliation. Due to our negative experience, I cannot recommend WGCS until serious meaningful changes are made.

They did not get in trouble, but we did. Please, for the love of God never send anyone that you do not wish this upon to go to I know three other people that this has happened of us were allowed to speak out about it and none of our families would let or stand up for ourselves. Now I…read morecan't review the school itself since I am way past middle school age... but I come here often to use the school's track. Usually in the mornings. There are other fitness groups that use the track F3 and other running groups, but usually everyone is pretty nice (especially at 5am). The track itself is not lit (lighted), but the streetlights from Runnymede give you enough ambient light to run on the track early on. Just try not to wear all black - unless you are going for a ninja look or trying to scare someone. Aside from the track - there are plenty of parking spaces and access to the fields. A lot of times I see the F3 guys rolling around in the grass, or doing suicide runs on the basketball courts. I'm just happy I actually got out of bed at that hour to run.
