I don't know how this place has such high reviews. The food here is awful! I came here with my parents. We ordered a few appetizers, grape leaves, sambusik, kibba nayeh, and hummus. The sambusik was pretty good, and the hummus was average. The kibba nayeh was alright.. a bit warm, not seasoned very much and I've had much better at other places. The grape leaves however, were absolutely disgusting and inedible. They tasted as though they have been frozen for a long time and were pulled out of the freezer and left to thaw off in the heat. I told them to take it back because it was so bad, and I could hear the guys in the kitchen throwing a fit over it. And despite us not eating it because of how bad it was, they still charged me for it and refused to remove it from my bill. Fine. I'll pay it. We were hoping our main course would be better based on all the reviews. I ordered one shish kabab and one lamb kebab skewer. I asked if I can have the rice replaced with fries instead. Waitress told me yes, and then she asked me again if I wanted the rice too? I said no, no rice. I still received the rice by the way. My father ordered the grilled salmon, and my mother ordered the grilled shrimp. We have never had a more distasteful meal before. My kebabs were microscopic and completely overcooked and burnt. The only thing that tasted good was the garlic sauce they include with it, and the seasoned bread which was also charred in some areas but at least it had flavor. My father threw away his salmon, that's how bad it was. And as for my mother's grilled shrimp that I tried a piece of.. I don't even know how to describe that train wreck. I have no idea what they put on it, but whatever it was, it did not improve the taste. All in all it was a horrible horrible meal. We ordered their polo, which is a lemon mint smoothie, and that was pretty good. I will give them credit for that. And their sprite was nicely chilled. When we got the bill, I saw the grape leaves were still there, they also added on an extra sambusik that I did not order and they also charged me for the fries that I asked to have instead of the rice. They refunded me for the sambusik but did not take off the grape leaves as I mentioned before, and I let the french fries thing go. Even when I told them about the extra charge for the sambusik, they turned it into a big deal, and another waiter had to jump in and they took the check to the back and had a little discussion over it, before they decided the right thing to do would be to refund me the money they had already charged on my card for it. I tend to leave at least a 20% tip when I eat out. I couldn't leave them anything this time. Not just for how badly the food was, but for how we were treated, and how they tried to add extra charges to our bill and refused to take off something we did not eat and was absolutely terrible. I know sometimes mistakes like that happen, but my gut told me otherwise. Considering they received payment for items that should have been removed or never put on in the first place, I considered that their tip and couldn't wait to leave! I honestly would not recommend this place to anyone. And if you do go, stay away from their entrees and especially stay away from the grape leaves. I'd stick to perhaps some of the hot appetizers. Though I didn't try any other than the sambusik which was really good, I would hope that they wouldn't screw up the rest of the ones on their menu. I just left Maza and I needed to write a review right away! We ordered the Maza Sampler. It came with baba ghanouj, hummus, a filo dough with feta stuffed with feta and mozzarella and a puff pastry filled with seasoned ground meat, onions and spices. Everything was AMAZING. I love baba ghanouj and am very picky and this was excellent. I ordered the beef kabob and my mom ordered the chicken kabob. Seasoned/grilled perfectly. The garlic yoghurt was delicous.. I could have eaten it by the spoonful! I will definitely be back and recommend it to anyone wanting great Middle Eastern food in the Valley. read more

Stopped by Monday night for takeout and it was awful. Don't waste your money. We spent $100 and I can honestly say the only good thing there was the chicken kabobs. I've eaten at some upscale places in California, and my wife and I have both traveled to Greece, so we are no strangers to Middle Eastern food. The food at Maza is AMAZING. We ordered a sampler appetizer and a kebab platter to share. The spices were perfect, the meat was tender and juicy and seasoned to perfection. The baba ghanoush was possibly the best either of us ever had. Despite coming in very hungry, we couldn't finish everything due to the generous portion sizes. That's okay - more to enjoy later! We were surprised at how tastefully well done the interior is. It is suitable for a quick lunch while running errands, a fancy date, and anything in between. We will definitely be back. read more

Undoubtedly the best falafel and hummus I have had in this country. Maza is such a little hidden gem, a lucky find tucked away in Allentown. You can't go wrong with anything on their menu, but their basics are perfected which makes all the difference. Their staff is friendly and you will always be greeted by a smile. Their outdoor seating during summers is charming and lovely, and you are encouraged to sit amongst your friends and family to enjoy your meal for as long as you like without the sense of being hurried out. They definitely need a little more clientele, the place was empty on a Friday night. This restaurant is NOT fine dining, but good Middle eastern standards. If you look at all my reviews, I review based on what how the business identifies itself...so, a casual dining experience can still get 5 stars, if they are a great casual dining place. Decent food and hookah is completely overshadowed by terrible customer service. As a table of two we were treated like complete trash. Upon multiple denied requests to sit at a table that was shaded, we saw two other groups come and go from that table but it was "reserved". Certain customers were treated far differently, being allowed to move seats, and smoke inside, which we were told was against policy, becauss of their apparent status. The experience was so offputting we were forced to leave after about 20 minutes, and when confronted ownership was totally unbothered and dismissed our experience. read more

Baklava was served with the syrup on the side... Not how it's supposed to be made. Hummus was very bland, very little flavor to it and it had whole chickpeas in it (?). The food was mediocre but the service was worse. Part of my order was completely wrong, and another item was never brought out (but we also were not charged for it). They were very apologetic about the wrong order and did correct it. We were the only table in the place when we walked in on a late Friday afternoon before 5 pm during the Christmas season. One other table of about 7-8 people were seated about halfway during our meal. There were several waitstaff there and the owner (or manager) I believe. It was very difficult to get a server to get drinks refilled and to get the check. When we needed someone to get those items no one was around or they were sitting far away from us staring into their phones not paying attention to our table. I would be much more understanding if it was a full restaurant (I understand now why it was not) or if they were short staffed or both. I'm pretty easy going and patient in general. The food is fine average Arab food no complaints. The owner of this place is straight trash so rude and money hungry. We had our engagement here and agreed to have x amount of guest to have the entire restaurant to us. The entire time there were strangers coming in and out to go sit on the outside and we were promised space outside and ended up with one tiny little table and it was PACKED with strangers. The buffet was good but things got empty and it took an eternity for the food to be refilled after we asked repeatedly. I love middle eastern food. I have had it from some of the best Syrian home cooks in Allentown. I am a huge fan of the other middle eastern restaurants in the Allentown area. All that being said, this place did not reach even my lowest standards. Fatoush (salad rich with Lemmon juice, olive oil, garlic and sumac) is probably one of my most favorite dishes of this type of cuisine, and in fact one of my most favorite foods of all time (right up there with Phó). This was by far a failure on the fatoush. The waiter told me it was a pomegranate dressing... Not the classic salad I was looking for. There was no sumac or garlic that I could taste. The crisp pita that is served with the salad looked like it was deep fried in oil that was 4 years old. Dark and greasy. The waiter asked how my salad was, I said not very good and this isn't fatoush where I come from. He asked where I was from, I replied Allentown, where I have eaten Syrian food all my adult life. The hummus had no taste of Lemmon or garlic. It was overwhelmingly Tahini (sesame paste). The Babaganough was entirely too smokey and artificial. Almost as if liquid smoke was added. Whatever the puff pastry meat pies were, there were overly greasy and inedible. The beef kabob was over cooked, as I requested mid-rare. There was no attempt to season the protein whatsoever, in my opinion. I'm glad I did not order the raw kibbie, which is also a favorite. I could only imagine. I kindly explained to the waiter we did not enjoy the food. There was no attempt to satisfy my group or try to get me back, or anything done with the bill. No wonder the place was empty. Being the first one to write Maza a review, I wish I was a little more enthusiastic. My wife and I were eagerly awaiting the opening of yet another middle-eastern restaurant in the area and we were both utterly excited when we went to Maza for dinner last Friday evening. It was a nice sunny day and we chose to be seated outside. They have a charming outside seating area with the comforting sounds of a faux waterfall, wrought iron chairs and tables. We were surprised to see the restaurant almost empty and being 7pm on a Friday night, we were expecting to wait for a table. Apparently they charge for bottled water (they do not have tap water available) and apart from tea and coffee they do not have much choices for beverages. When I asked we were told that the owners were Syrian. We were kind of hoping for a bottle of Arak (anise flavored alcoholic drink akin to the Turkish Raki). Anyways, we ordered the Shanklish (sheep milk cheese) which came with a diced tomato and onion salad. The cheese was delicious. The taste of Shanklish varies and the more aged it is, the harder it gets and develops are more complex flavor. Their cheese was relatively aged and had a nice nutty flavor to it. It tasted rather good on a nice summer evening. We also ordered their Sambusak. Sambusak is akin to the Indian Samosas except that they are pastry filled with meat. Four decent sized pastried arrived. Their were fresh, flaky and delicious. The meat filling was quite flavorful and not dry. It was a good start to our meal. For our entrees we both ordered the kofte kebab (marinated ground meat), mine with a side of their roasted vegetables and my wife's with a side of fries. When the entrees came in, we were a little disappointed with the portion size. It was a 13-14$ entree and all we got were two elongated kofte kebabs with a finely chopped parsley salad with our sides. The kebabs were juicy but quite under-seasoned for our taste. Two more of those and it might have been worth the price. My roasted vegetables were ok. My wife's fries were quite amazing. They were double fried and were deliciously crisp. I also had a pot of the Arabic coffee which was quite good and strong with the characteristic cardamom flavor in the background. Overall, I was a little disappointed with Maza, which has so much potential but fails to live up to it. If they could improve on their drawbacks, this could turn out to be a wonderful new addition to the local restaurant scene. read more

This was my first time eating here. I ordered chicken shawarma. The chicken tasted as if it was microwaved and it was very greasy. Had a delicious meal with two of my girlfriends on Saturday afternoon. We enjoyed the spinach pie and hummus appetizers and order the beef and chicken kabobs. We split all of it and still had leftovers. For dessert we ordered the baklava and this was the icing on a wonderful meal. A big thank you to Patrick for taking such good care of us.
