It's interesting to see all the options for window covering. I've never been a fan of Venetian blinds, though they have a nice range of good quality wooden Venetians here which I don't mind. What I do like is their range of folding blinds which are made out of curtain material. They sit flush with the window and fold up to make attractive ruffles. Because they're made out of curtain material, they're a bit more pricey than the canvas coverings. They do some heavy duty security windows with inbuilt blinds, but mostly they just have the attractive variety for a standard lounge room window. Kresta is pricey, because their materials are good quality and they offer decent guarantees and lots of assistance with getting the right product for your specific room. Their staff know their products and go out of their way to be helpful.

I went to a few tile places but settled on Life's Tiles. They were able to provide me with guidance on what type of tiles would suit my house and advise me accordingly, as well as let me know roughly how many tiles I would need. Admittedly they were a bit off and some boxes had to go back, but they refunded them with no problems. Better to have too many than not enough!! The price was great and the service was fantastic. What more can you ask? They even offer installation, though I had my own tiler do that for me, so I can't really comment on that part of it unfortunately.

We took our house plans with us and had Life's Tiles estimate how many of each floor and wall tile we would need and also allow a standard 10% for cutting and breakage which sounded fair. When the job was completed we had 3 boxes of wall and 1 box of floor tiles remaining as well as a number of loose tiles. I then rang to organise the return of the full boxes and was informed that they could not be returned even though they were 1st grade and in current production. Looking at a previous review over estimating beyond the 10% seems to be something that happens regularly but he was lucky enough to be able to return his excess tiles. Trap for young players! I now wonder how much extra goes into the till now that they are refusing to take the excess back.

Redecorate is a really small and unassuming shop just behind a bus stop on Magill Rd. It would be…read moreeasy to overlook this one next to the glitzier offerings that surround it. There are a couple of things which set Redecorate apart. The first is that they specialise in recycled curtains. By this, I do not mean something you could pick up at Vinnies, these are really high quality and heavy weight. As anyone who has redone the furnishings in their house in earnest knows, curtains are bloody expensive! What a great idea to up-cycle them like this. They have a bunch of furniture in the store and plenty more in storage, most of it in Victorian and Georgian styles. They also offer a home styling service, that's right, they'll come to your house and do it for you and chances are they've already got all the gear on hand to do it!

To me old stuff is by far superior than new stuff. The more de-stressed and ugly retro a chair looks, the happier I get. If I can get a near new filing cabinet for half the price in olive green, then I know I'm having a good day. And so it goes that every time I enter Hindmarsh Disposals I enter my happy place. Near new and near eras I wasn't even born in are all represented here. There is a particularly large amount of crockery and glassware from the 70s and 80s for $1-4, chairs, side tables, bed headboards and cupboards from the 60s and 70s are well represented and so are filing cabinets. My hipster dream is to make a table out of an old door and for $60-90 you'd walk away with a glass pane, wooden door that needs little restoration. Actually, hardly anything here needs much restoration - this isn't a junk yard after all. Be prepared to rummage as everyone says, but also know that this isn't a Freedom showroom for a reason. You're not paying to have a manikin show how to touch a lamp here and that's why it's cheap. And like the guy on the TV tells you to do, just haggle. You are bound to find a vintage Holden sign or old record through to a brightly coloured collection of aluminum tea and flour canisters for nix or for half the price of even IKEA furniture you can get something that was built in the day when things were made to last more than 6 months and didn't require an Allen key to assemble.

The prices are reasonable - when I first moved to Adelaide with my parents we bought lots of secondhand stuff here. I once found a very old fashioned book about how a lady should go about bagging a man, for fifty cents. Antique sexist propaganda!

Besides stocking a great range of home decor in the french provincial style, they specialise in custom made soft furnishings, window treatments and upholstery. Quite a decadent past time is interior decorating but it has its rewards in the end, I would certainly love to have this style of decor in my home but I might give it a go myself. To give an idea of what's in store there are brass base table lamps, baroque style mirrors, lots of sparkling chandeliers, cabinets the majority being in antique white, chairs, decorative birdcages (a standard in any home decor shop), candles and elaborate candle stick holders, there's an enormous wall clock towards the back and really so many more gorgeous items, to much to mention here. Give yourself a treat and visit this shop as it's a must do when coming to North Adelaide next time.

This was a turning point to the whole streetscape as other businesses took residence and it just evolved into what it is today, a funky, trendy, popular place to be in Elizabeth St Croydon, especially on a weekend. OSR has optimised the space to feel and look like your living room at home, a place to test the chair or browse the pictures on the wall and it's never a dull shop to be in as there is always something new and quirky to fill a vacant spot. With so many things and so little space and evolution taking place OSR gradually expanded taking over the shop next door and then the door next to that one, I suppose you can call it three small rooms' now but the theme still continues. A lot of items have a distinct Ikea-esque feel but with quality and much more expensive to match. Mind you, OSR is not just about furniture it also has vintage clothing, fabric, lampshades and knick-knacks plus always more. As long as they don't bubble up and burst at the seams, the store will remain in the street for many years to come I'm sure, when you're on a good thing stick to it. Parking is on the street and I recommend you don't leave the Jag there as it gets pretty squeezy, don't want any nasty surprises. And also, many people have been confused in the past thinking OSR is on Queen St - which does have a better ring to it- but as you go over the Croydon train line it then becomes Elizabeth St and then trails off down the road. Incidentally, the owner is also part developer of the Bowerbird Bazaar.
