I was in Kirksville for business last Friday. I had the pleasure of lunch at Maxwells. The decor was darling like an upscale tavern. Very comfortable and super clean. The menu had a little something for everyone. They have a $5 daily lunch special if you are on a budget. I opted for the catfish sandwich with the house-made chips. The catfish was hot, fresh and seasoned perfectly. The fish was flakey and crispy on the outside not soggy at all. The roll the fish was served on was not your standard bun. It was soft and yummy. The house-made chips were just about perfect. They were seasoned without being too salty. I got a dip that I forgot the name of for my chips and it was terrific it was ranch based but thick and delicious. The service was wonderful, friendly and fast. You could tell that if you stopped by often they would know you by name. A wonderful little find in Kirksville, can't wait to make it back. read more

This place is really cool. The ambiance is rustic with cute signs with expressions refering to Max. The food was very good. I had the catfish sandwich, my husband got the chicken sandwich and my daughter got the feta spinach salad. The homemade potato chips had a hint of spice to them. The staff was incredibly helpful and polite. They did a great job of making us feel important throughout our meal. I ordered the frisco melt which was very good. Overall both our meals were bery good. Loved the atmosphere and decor of the restaurant although some elements were somewhat out of date or out of place (ie plastic, multicolored disco ball). So I really don't want to put down a local business, but my wife and I haven't had a good experience with this place once. I like the food, it is good in the future I hope to order carryout. My problem has been with the service, our first time was on a busy Saturday night so slow service was expected but our waitress was not attentive at all and we seemed to be an inconvenience for her. So, one not so good experience, no big deal, we'll try again. We went early on a Wednesday evening, we thought surely it won't be like last time. We order our drinks and an appetizer, get the drinks, and order the rest of our food. 30 minutes later, we're still sitting there with nothing, the table next to us got their food very quickly even though they came in at the same time as we did. Finally our waitress explained to us she forgot to put our order in and they just started cooking it, so it would be another 15 to 20 minutes. The waitress was very apologetic and although she made a mistake it's not her fault we had previously had a bad experience, but every time I've went it just hasn't been worth my time. read more

If you want drinks (beer and/or whiskey), you'll be ok. Food was not good. Wait for food was 45 minutes, although I will say it was Parent's weekend. Atmosphere, was pleasant, service was OK.things went seriously south from there. Appetizer, was the onion blossom, served in a bowl. It was greasy and not completely cooked. (We were also not given separate plates to share it). The entree was broasted chicken, which this time was hot and good tasting. Fries were cold and had been sitting for a while, as was my wife's baked potato. Cole slaw had cheese in it (who puts cheese in Cole slaw)? This was the third time trying the establishment, and it has not improved. I had heard that they had a new manager, so we thought we would try it again. Went here with my family one weekend and it's definitely one of the better restaurants in Kirksville. They even have a trained chef who has some signature dishes on the menu, one of which is the lobster mac and cheese. I decided to get this meal along with a salad bar, and the mac and cheese was creamy with perfectly cooked pasta spirals and generous chunks of real lobster meat. It came out in a small bowl but was surprisingly filing. The salad bar was standard and you are only allowed one trip. My family also ordered appetizers, which were half price at the time during Happy Hour, and their homemade chips with the drunken dip were delicious - very fresh tasting, seasoned correctly, and large. We will definitely be back to try more items on the menu. read more

ATSU's Student Advocate Association held our annual couples event at Maxwells last spring. It was a luau theme. Maxwells offered us a large private room space for FREE for ATSU students. Plus their owner let us borrow and helped decorate the room with a ton of flowery decorations that fit our luau theme! They also made a special menu for us to fit the luau theme that included pork sliders, pineapple and shrimp skewers, Maui onion dip with homemade chips, and more! It was really easy planning and running the event with bartender Nick. The staff was always so eager to help make the event a huge success. All our guests complimented on how good the food was and how pretty the room was decorated. I would highly recommend Maxwells for any private events or even to just hangout for happy hour and specials! It wasn't very busy, just "bar" food. Sorry, in such a big space empty ususlly means something. Other bar restaurants in town serve food that's better and more for your money. The staff was tryng but it was mediocre. read more

I recently had the opportunity to dine at Maxwell's again. This visit was much better than my first. The food was great. Additionally, Maxwell's is gaining great support in the community. I frequently hear very good things about the restaurant and bar. I would recommend it to anyone local or visiting. read more

1. Better wait staff. Be more knowledgable/attentive/professional. Meaning I don't need you to chit chat with me, I need you to make sure the food is to my liking, my drink is filled, and pay attention if it seems I'm looking in your direction a lot. 2. Went there for dinner, got about a 10 dollar burger-was exactly what I expected. Pretty good chunk of meat with the works, comparable to a burger at applebees or a fridays. The dollar margaritas deal on thursdays was a pleasant surprise, they coulda been poured with a little heavier hand but for a dollar a piece they're an ok deal. Waitress was upbeat and happy. I think you would expect a restaurant that has most of their tables open would be able to accommodate a table of two, but this was unfortunately not the case. I had a chicken sandwich that didn't have a lot of taste. Pass on this place as there are several much better options in Kirksville. Lastly, the owners of Maxwell's will argue with you on Yelp about your review and then repeatedly attempt to have Yelp remove your honest review when you're unwilling to edit it. Hosted an event here and they were very easy to work with. They kept the food coming and it was very good! The service was great and the managers were very helpful in planning our event. The broasted chicken and the "drunk dip" and chips were a hit with our guests. read more

My wife and I eat there at least once a week since moving here. We have always had very good service, and the meals are great. Their pasta dishes are more than one enough for a person to get full on. The steaks are better than Colton's, flavorful and tender. The cook here definitely kicks a**. If you are from a larger city, maybe the low key atmosphere and good meals are a little less than you are used to, but the quality surpasses other places I've dined, in many other cities and countries. read more
